Book Essays on Education and Kindred Subjects Classic Reprint

Download or read book Essays on Education and Kindred Subjects Classic Reprint written by Herbert Spencer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Education and Kindred Subjects The profession of teaching has long been characterised by certain habitual convictions, which Spencer undertook to shake rudely, and even to deride. The first of these con victions is that all education, physical, intellectual, and moral, must be authoritative, and need take no account of the natural wishes, tendencies, and motives of the ignorant and undeveloped child. The second dominating conviction is that to teach means to tell, or show, children what they ought to see, believe, and utter. Expositions by the teacher and books are therefore the true means of education. The third and supreme conviction is that the method of educa tion which produced the teacher himself and the contem petary or earlier scholars authors, and publicists, must be the righteous and sufficient method. Its fruits demon strate its soundness, and make it sacred. Herbert Spencer, in the essays included in the present volume, assaulted all three of these firm convictions. Accordingly, the ideas on education which he put forth more than fifty years ago have penetrated educational practice very slowly particularly in England; but they are now coming to prevail in most civilised countries, and they will prevail more and more. Through him, the thoughts on education of Comenius, Montaigne, Locke, Milton, Rousseau, Pestalozzi, and other noted writers on this neglected subject are'at last winning their way into practice, with the modi fications or adaptations which the immense gains of the human race in knowledge and power since the nineteenth century Opened have shown to be wise. Time would fail to enumerate all the agents, agencies, and interests involved in education - state, church, press, the professions in all their branches, parents, citizens, of all ranks and grades. It is in evitable, that to such a multiplicity of observers education should present different sides, and prob able, that to few if any will its full compass reveal itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education and Ethics: And Other Essays on Educational Subjects Hat the actions of the individual often fall short of his ideals is a barren truism, but that the ethical standard of a community is generally lower than that of the individuals who compose it is a fact which may not be so easily recognized. And yet we habitually observe that men in the mass are capable of deeds at which they would severally shrink. Whether it be in the great game of nations, where diplomacy and skill are often the merest euphemisms for trickery and deceit, or on the humbler stage of party warfare, where insincerity is often the readiest weapon, we see how frequently the man in private life is superior to the same man in his capacity as member of a party, or a society, or a state. This is particularly true in the case of a community of boys. The force of example and the influence of tradition are stronger in childhood than at a more. Book Studies in American Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in American Education Classic Reprint written by Albert Bushnell Hart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in American Education The six essays which make up this volume have been prepared at various times and deal with a variety of subjects. Nevertheless there is between them a thread of connection and re lation. They all are based upon two funda mental ideas: that education is substantially one from beginning to end, so that the same or similar methods may be applied throughout; and that teachers of every grade and subject have a common interest and may learn from each other. They are the outcome of a desire to make some small contribution to the great common fund of experience. That so many of these essays deal with the problems of the primary and secondary schools needs no apology. Every American must feel an interest in the systems which reach the great est number of pupils, and lay the foundations for later study. A short service in the Cam bridge School Committee has taught some thing of the aims and practical difficulties of primary and secondary education. Download or read book Cambridge Essays on Education Classic Reprint written by A. C. Benson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Essays on Education Our idea has been this: at a time of much educational enterprise and unrest, we believed that it would be advisable to collect the opinions of a few experienced teachers and administrators upon certain questions of the theory and motive of education which lie a little beneath the surface. To deal with current and practical problems does not seem the first need at present. Just now, work is both common as well as fashionable; most people are doing their best; and, if anything, the danger is that organisation should outrun foresight and intelligence. Moreover a weakening of the old compulsion of the classics has resulted, not in perfect freedom, but in a tendency on the part of some scientific enthusiasts simply to substitute compulsory science for compulsory literature, when the real question rather is whether obligatory subjects should not be diminished as far as possible, and more sympathetic attention given to faculty and aptitude. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher Essays and Addresses on Education The papers of this volume fall into three groups, two of the three being written by myself. From my writings on education I have selected only those which may have some claim to permanent interest, and all but two have been tested by previous pub lication. Those of the first group deal with ques tions about which we teachers, eager about our im measurable art beyond most professional persons, never cease to wonder and debate: What is teaching? How far may it influence character? Can it be prao ticed on persons too busy or too poor to come to our class - rooms? To subjects of what scope should it be applied? And how shall we content ourselves with its necessary limitations? Under these diverse head ings a kind of philosophy of education is outlined. The last two papers, having been given as lectures and stenographically reported, I have left in their original colloquial form. A group of papers on Har vard follows, preceded by an explanatory note, and the volume closes with a few papers by Mrs. Palmer.. She and I often talked of preparing together a book on education. Now, alone, I gather up these frag mentsn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
