Book excerpt: Paris is famous for romance. Chicago, the blues. Buenos Aires, the tango. And Toronto? Well, Canada’s largest urban centre is known for being a “city that works” – a remarkably livable metropolis for its size. In this lavishly illustrated book, Richard White reveals how urban planning contributed to Toronto becoming a functional, world-class city. Focusing on the period from 1940 to 1980, he examines how planners shaped the city and its development amid a maelstrom of local and international obstacles and influences. Based on meticulous research of Toronto’s postwar plans and supplemented by dozens of interviews, Planning Toronto provides a comprehensive and lively explanation of how Toronto’s postwar plans – city, metropolitan, and regional – came to be, who devised them, and what impact they had. When it comes to the history of urban planning, the question may not be whether a particular plan was good or bad but whether in the end it made a difference. As White demonstrates, in Toronto’s case planning did matter – just not always as expected.

Shoreline Regeneration Work Group and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The public's desire for the benefits of shoreline modification - including the recreational, economic, and aesthetic opportunities afforded by parks and access and boating -- is in conflict with an equally powerful desire to avoid the negative consequences of previous projects. How can we make the shoreline better: healthier, more accessible, and more enjoyable, without making it worse - uglier and more polluted? This dilemma is the reason shoreline regeneration is an issue today."--Page 15.
Download or read book Interactions of Energy and Climate written by W. Bach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of industrialization in the last century, a steady increase in energy consumption can be observed. At the same time, energy generation switched from wood and coal to predominantly oil, coal and natural gas. Soon, many countries became aware of the fact that the resources of fossil fuels, especially of oil and natural gas are finite. Diversification of energy sources became a requirement for the future. Governments expressed their concern by setting up natural energy programmes while international organisations undertook assessments of the global energy resources and possible rates of supply and substitution. When it comes to setting up energy policies, the following factors must be taken into consideration: population growth, level and nature of socio-economic activity, the costs of energy, the adequacy and reliability of supply, the availability of technology and supporting infrastructure, the success of energy conservation programmes and concern about the environment, safety aspects of production and use of energy as well as educational efforts toward a rational use of energy. When we express our most urgent concern, the long-term global energy provision, experts offer four interrelated partial strategies: - the strategy of rational use and conservation of energy - the strategy of using renewable energy sources - the coal strategy including coal gasification and liquefaction - the nuclear power strategy. Any strategy, however, for securing future energy supply has, from my point of view, to be thoroughly examined as to its impact on the environment.
