Book A History of the Ozarks Volume 1

Download or read book A History of the Ozarks Volume 1 written by Brooks Blevins and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geologic forces raised the Ozarks. Myth enshrouds these hills. Human beings shaped them and were shaped by them. The Ozarks reflect the epic tableau of the American people—the native Osage and would-be colonial conquerors, the determined settlers and on-the-make speculators, the endless labors of hardscrabble farmers and capitalism of visionary entrepreneurs. The Old Ozarks is the first volume of a monumental three-part history of the region and its inhabitants. Brooks Blevins begins in deep prehistory, charting how these highlands of granite, dolomite, and limestone came to exist. From there he turns to the political and economic motivations behind the eagerness of many peoples to possess the Ozarks. Blevins places these early proto-Ozarkers within the context of larger American history and the economic, social, and political forces that drove it forward. But he also tells the varied and colorful human stories that fill the region's storied past—and contribute to the powerful myths and misunderstandings that even today distort our views of the Ozarks' places and people. A sweeping history in the grand tradition, A History of the Ozarks, Volume 1: The Old Ozarks is essential reading for anyone who cares about the highland heart of America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the oldest European settlement in Missouri, Ste. Genevieve was the funnel through which the eastern Ozarks (the 5,000 square miles beyond Ste. Genevieve's location on the Mississippi) was established. A magisterial account of the settlement of this area from 1760 through 1830, Opening the Ozarks focuses on the acquisition and occupation of land, the transformation of the environment, the creation of cohesive settlements, and the building of neighborhoods and eventually organized counties. The study begins with the French Creole settlement at Old Ste. Genevieve in the middle of the eighteenth century. It describes the movement of the French into the Ozark hills during the rest of that century and continues with that of the American immigrants into Upper Louisiana after 1796, ending with the Americanization of the district after the Louisiana Purchase. Walter Schroeder examines the cultural transition from a French society, operating under a Spanish administration, to an American society in which French, Indians, and Africans formed minorities.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial History of Missouri (the Center State), Vol. 1: One Hundred Years in the Union, 1820-1921 The treaty which has so happily sealed the friendship of our two countries has been received here with general acclamation. Some inflexible federalists have still ventured to brave the public opinion. It will fix their character with the world and with posterity, who, not descending to the other points of difference between us, will judge them by this fact, so palpable as to speak for itself in all times and places. For myself and my country, I thank you for the aids you have given in it; and I congratulate you on having lived to give those aids in a transaction replete with blessings to unborn millions of men, and which will mark the face of a portion on the globe so extensive as that which now composes the United States of America. - Jefi'erson to M. Since these families and other arrived here before the Louisiana Purchase, they received large influx of settlers headed West. It is surrounded by the counties of: Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Madison, Ste. Genevieve and St. Francois. This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 1054 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial History of Missouri (the Center State), Vol. 3: One Hundred Years in the Union, 1820-1921 The boyhood of the future editor of the Star, as he himself described it, was a period of insurgency. He chafed at restraint and rule, but there came into his life certain influences which turned this spirit of insurgency into a fighting force for the right. He would never succumb to the domination of injustice to the many and he did not hesitate to express his honest convictions. On one occasion in his youth, after participating in some mischievous prank, he was called before his father and on being questioned told the full truth The father's response was: Well, thank God, you are not a liar, anyway. He then told the son to come to him when in trouble and he would see him through. The incident made a deep impression upon the mind of the youthful culprit. That he had early become a factor of force in his home community is indicated in his being called to act as secretary when a meeting of the substantial business men of his town was held to draft resolutions opposing secession. As a young man he read law. Later with a partner he engaged in growing sea-island cotton in Georgia, but the venture proved unsuccessful. Returning to his native city he took up contracting, building roads, bridges and buildings. In this connection he was instrumental in promoting the first good-roads law passed in Indiana and forever afterward was a stalwart champion of the good roads movement. From young manhood Mr. Nelson was deeply interested in politics and his great admiration was won by Samuel J. Tilden through the latter's courage in fighting the Tweed ring. He ever regarded him as one of America's constructive statesmen and carried as a guiding factor in his own life the words which he heard Tilden utter: While it is a great thing to lead armies, it is a greater thing to lead the minds of men. Throughout his life the pictures of Tilden, Cleveland and Roosevelt hung above his desk as those of three great constructive leaders in American citizenship.
