Book The Centaur Wars

Download or read book The Centaur Wars written by Roz Evans and published by Aljote Press, LLC. This book was released on 2021-12-17 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating adventure and a spectacular journey... Rule one: don’t trust the centaur. Sixteen-year-old Dee knew something was imprisoned beneath the old motel, but she never expected this. The centaur is shackled. He’s injured. He’s furious at being captured by humans. And he’s exactly what she’s spent her whole life searching for. Rule two: don’t talk to the centaur. Dee needs answers. Her family has a dark history and she has to know why. She’s grown up beside a forest with mutated creatures that modern science can’t explain: flying newts. Winged snakes. However, a centaur is far beyond anything she’s spotted in the trees. Rule three: don’t free the centaur. If he wasn’t chained he’d have killed her already. But Dee strikes a bargain with the human-hating centaur: in exchange for his freedom, he’ll give her answers. His herd is murderous. Even worse foes lay beyond the haunted forest. But the epic voyage Dee embarks on leads to far more than the source of winged snakes, as she uncovers the greatest secret ever hidden from humankind… if she can survive it. A rollicking modern fantasy, perfect for those craving action, pet sea serpents, and plenty of witty banter.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD AND THE PRIX DU MEILLEUR LIVRE ÉTRANGER The Centaur is a modern retelling of the legend of Chiron, the noblest and wisest of the centaurs, who, painfully wounded yet unable to die, gave up his immortality on behalf of Prometheus. In the retelling, Olympus becomes small-town Olinger High School; Chiron is George Caldwell, a science teacher there; and Prometheus is Caldwell’s fifteen-year-old son, Peter. Brilliantly conflating the author’s remembered past with tales from Greek mythology, John Updike translates Chiron’s agonized search for relief into the incidents and accidents of three winter days spent in rural Pennsylvania in 1947. The result, said the judges of the National Book Award, is “a courageous and brilliant account of a conflict in gifts between an inarticulate American father and his highly articulate son.”

Book Centaurs Rioting in Thessaly Memory and the Classical World

Download or read book Centaurs Rioting in Thessaly Memory and the Classical World written by Martyn Hudson and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treads new paths through the labyrinths of our human thought. It meanders through the darkness to encounter the monsters at the heart of the maze: Minotaurs, Centaurs, Automata, Makers, Humans. One part of our human thought emerges from classical Ionia and Greek civilisation more generally. We obsessively return to that thought, tread again its pathways, re-enact its stories, repeat its motifs and gestures. We return time and time again to construct and re-construct the beings which were part of its cosmology and mythology - stories enacted from a classical world which is itself at once imaginary and material. The "Never Never Lands" of the ancient world contain fabulous beasts and humans and landscapes of desire and violence. We encounter the rioting Centaurs there and never again cease to conjure them up time and time again through our history. The Centaur mythologies display a fascination with animals and what binds and divides human beings from them. The Centaur hints ultimately at the idea of the genesis of civilisation itself. The Labyrinth, constructed by Daedalus, is itself a prison and a way of thinking about making, designing, and human aspiration. Designed by humans it offers mysteries that would be repeated time and time again - a motif which is replicated through human history. Daedalus himself is an archetype for creation and mastery, the designer of artefacts and machines which would be the beginning of forays into the total domination of nature. Centaurs, Labyrinths, Automata offer clues to the origins and ultimately the futures of humanity and what might come after it. Martyn Hudson is the coordinator of the Co-Curate North East digital archives and machines project at Newcastle University in the School of Arts and Cultures, as well as a Lecturer in Art and Design History. He has published widely in landscape, history, music, and archives. His book The Slave Ship, Memory and the Origin of Modernity was published by Routledge in 2016, and he has two other books forthcoming from Routledge: Ghosts, Landscapes and Social Memory and Species and Machines: The Human Subjugation of Nature.

Book Triumphs in the Age of Civil War

Download or read book Triumphs in the Age of Civil War written by Carsten Hjort Lange and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the wars of the Late Republic were largely civil conflicts. There was, therefore, a tension between the traditional expectation that triumphs should be celebrated for victories over foreign enemies and the need of the great commanders to give full expression to their prestige and charisma, and to legitimize their power. Triumphs in the Age of Civil War rethinks the nature and the character of the phenomenon of civil war during the Late Republic. At the same time it focuses on a key feature of the Roman socio-political order, the triumph, and argues that a commander could in practice expect to triumph after a civil war victory if it could also be represented as being over a foreign enemy, even if the principal opponent was clearly Roman. Significantly, the civil aspect of the war did not have to be denied. Carsten Hjort Lange provides the first study to consider the Roman triumph during the age of civil war, and argues that the idea of civil war as "normal" reflects the way civil war permeated the politics and society of the Late Roman Republic.

Download or read book The Centaur s Dilemma written by James E. Baker and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessing the legal and practical questions posed by the use of artificial intelligence in national security matters The increasing use of artificial intelligence poses challenges and opportunities for nearly all aspects of society, including the military and other elements of the national security establishment. This book addresses how national security law can and should be applied to artificial intelligence, which enables a wide range of decisions and actions not contemplated by current law. James Baker, an expert in national security law and process, adopts a realistic approach in assessing how the law—even when not directly addressing artificial intelligence—can be used, or even misused, to regulate this new technology. His new book covers, among other topics, national security process, constitutional law, the law of armed conflict, arms control, and academic and corporate ethics. With his own background as a judge, he examines potential points of contention and litigation in an area where the law is still evolving and might not yet provide clear and certain answers. The Centaur's Dilemma also analyzes potential risks associated with the use of artificial intelligence in the realm of national security—including the challenges of machine-human interface, operating (or not operating) the national-security decision-making process at machine speed, and the perils of a technology arms race. Written in plain English, The Centaur's Dilemma will help guide policymakers, lawyers, and technology experts as they deal with the many legal questions that will arise when using artificial intelligence to plan and carry out the actions required for the nation's defense.
