Book Cellulose Nitrate in Conservation

Download or read book Cellulose Nitrate in Conservation written by Charles M. Selwitz and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 1988-04-01 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report attempts to isolate and separately examine each of the factors known to lead to cellulose nitrate decomposition, and then relate their contribution to the instability of the polymer when it is used as a bonding agent for ceramics and as a lacquer for metal objects. These factors include deterioration caused by heat, radiation, or acid impurities, or through the loss of plasticizer. There is, moreover, decomposition caused autocatalytically by the initial breakdown products. In particular, the publication examines new information on chemical changes under ambient conditions that has been developed recently through advances in analytical procedures such as chemiluminescence, X-ray scanning spectroscopy (ESCA), and more sophisticated viscometry. This new information will be added to the large body of data, collected over the past 150 years, on the instability of cellulose nitrate under more severe conditions.

This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paints, varnishes, and lacquers are chemicals or substances that you can use to change the color, texture or shine of a surface. These materials can be applied to a wide range of surfaces, including those made of metal, wood, paper, and plastic. They can be used to paint canvas works of art, to coat beautiful things with a layer of protection, or for practical uses like polishing furniture. The most popular kind of paints are oil-based paints, which are created using pigments that, when dried, leave an oily layer on the surface. Due to their lower levels of toxicity as compared to paintings made with an oil base, acrylics have grown in popularity in recent years. Paints, varnishes, and lacquers are essential supplies for any job involving home décor. Numerous colours are available for these products to match any style. Additionally, you can choose the finish that best meets your needs because they come in a variety of finishes. These products come in a variety that makes it simple to obtain just what you need without having to purchase numerous different things. These paints, varnishes, and lacquers are not only long-lasting but also simple to use thanks to current technology. The size of the global market for paints, varnishes, and lacquers is anticipated to increase at a CAGR of 7.8%. The demand is on the rise, and technological developments in the paint business are the main drivers of this expansion. Global population growth is also driving up demand for residential and commercial real estate, which will drive up demand for paints, varnishes, and lacquers globally. This sector's growth can be attributed to a variety of factors. More paints, varnishes, and lacquers will be required when there is a rise in the demand for new housing due to population growth. As homeowners attempt to make their homes appear newer with fresh coats of paint, industry analysts predict that sales will increase even further. In order to meet the expectations of the market, manufacturers must also adapt. While they look for new markets to supply, they have been investing in machinery and extending their manufacturing lines. In fact, it's one of the fastest-growing manufacturing industries. This industry not only has a high growth rate but also offers tremendous opportunities for entrepreneurs to enter this booming business. Modern paint, varnish, and lacquer technologies have made it simpler for people to design unique paint jobs for use on furniture. Due to the low entrance requirements, this industry benefits entrepreneurs, to launch your business. The Major Contents of the books are Solvents, Plasticizers, Distempers, Whitewash, Putties & Emulsion, Lacquers, Primers, Powder Coatings, Pigments, Alkyd Resin, Solvent-type Resins, Hydrocarbon Thinners, Epoxy Resins with Formulations, Factory Layout, and Photographs of Machinery with Supplier Contact Information. A comprehensive reference to manufacturing and entrepreneurship in the Paints, Varnishes & Lacquers products business. This book is a one-stop shop for everything you need to know about the Paints, Varnishes & Lacquers products manufacturing industry, which is ripe with potential for manufacturers, merchants, and entrepreneurs. Download or read book Painting Materials written by R. J. Gettens and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combined training and experience of the authors of this classic in the varied activities of painting conservation, cultural research, chemistry, physics, and paint technology ideally suited them to the task they attempted. Their book, written when they were both affiliated with the Department of Conservation at Harvard's Fogg Art Museum, is not a handbook of instruction. It is, instead, an encyclopedic collection of specialized data on every aspect of painting and painting research. The book is divided into five sections: Mediums, Adhesives, and Film Substances (amber, beeswax, casein, cellulose, nitrate, dragon's blood, egg tempera, paraffin, lacquer, gum Arabic, Strasbourg turpentine, water glass, etc.); Pigments and Inert Materials (over 100 entries from alizarin to zinnober green); Solvents, Diluents, and Detergents (acetone, ammonia, carbon tetrachloride, soap, water, etc.); Supports (academy board, dozens of different woods, esparto grass, gesso, glass, leather, plaster, silk, vellum, etc.); and Tools and Equipment. Coverage within each section is exhaustive. Thirteen pages are devoted to items related to linseed oil; eleven to the history and physical and chemical properties of pigments; two to artificial ultramarine blue; eleven to wood; and so on with hundreds of entries. Much of the information — physical behavior, earliest known use, chemical composition, history of synthesis, refractive index, etc. — is difficult to find elsewhere. The rest was drawn from such a wide range of fields and from such a long span of time that the book was immediately hailed as the best organized, most accessible work of its kind. That reputation hasn't changed. The author's new preface lists some recent discoveries regarding pigments and other materials and the pigment composition chart has been revised, but the text remains essentially unchanged. It is still invaluable not only for museum curators and conservators for whom it was designed, but for painters themselves and for teachers and students as well.
