Book 7 Myths about Singleness

Download or read book 7 Myths about Singleness written by Sam Allberry and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If marriage shows us the shape of the gospel, singleness shows us its sufficiency. Much of what we commonly assume about singleness—that it is primarily about the absence of good things like intimacy, family, or meaningful ministry—is either flat-out untrue or, at the very least, shouldn’t be true. To be single, we often think, is to be alone and spiritually hindered. But the Bible paints a very different picture of singleness: it is a positive gift and blessing from God. This book seeks to help Christians—married and unmarried alike—value singleness as a gift from God so that we can all encourage singles to take hold of the unique opportunities their singleness affords and see their role in the flourishing of the church as a whole.

Book The Serpent and the Dove

    Book Details:
  • Author : A. W. Richard Sipe
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2007-10-30
  • ISBN : 0313347263
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book The Serpent and the Dove written by A. W. Richard Sipe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-10-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Sipe, himself a former monk and priest, has made a lifelong venture of determining the reality and meaning of religious celibacy. Even an adequate operational definition of religious celibacy, he says, has been avoided by Catholic hierarchy and scholars to preserve the celibate myth. Having spent 25 years conducting a study of celibacy and sexual behavior in Roman Catholic priests, Sipe concluded that at any one time no more than 50 percent of priests were practicing celibacy. To more fully understand what celibacy is, how it is practiced, the affect it has on the humanness of men of women, and the social effects it presents, Sipe says we can use the approach presented in this book. Specifically, we can analyze historic men who presented themselves or were perceived as living examples of celibacy and also focus on the most profound truths of celibacy found in literary accounts. Psychology, religion, and literary criticism interface and are woven together in this book with minimal jargon. The Serpent and the Dove was written in the hope of exciting honest analysis of the essence of religious celibacy and to foster a recrudescence of authentic sexual vigor with all of its evolutionary potential. Human sexuality is not going away; nor is it irrelevant to the wellbeing, progress and happiness of the human community, says Sipe. And the practice of genuine celibacy is not going to disappear either. No question, the Catholic Church needs profound reformation. But in all my work I have chosen not to throw any babies out with the horrendously dirty 'holy water' the church continues to treasure and disseminate. Here, as in all my work, I try to foster dialogue between religion and science, such as literary criticism. The Catholic Church (and religion) is at a Copernican Moment when it has to cede to science the nature of sexuality. The Serpent and the Dove is one more work among Sipe's many books and articles making the need for that clear.

Book Living Celibacy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gerdenio Sonny Manuel
  • Publisher : Paulist Press
  • Release : 2012
  • ISBN : 080914784X
  • Pages : 146 pages

Download or read book Living Celibacy written by Gerdenio Sonny Manuel and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living Celibacy presents five pathways toward promoting the psychosexual health of Catholic priests: (1) Live close to God and one's deepest desires; (2) Develop broad and deep interpersonal relationships and communities of support; (3) Ask for love, nurture others, and negotiate separation; (4) Cope with stress and recognize destructive patterns of behavior; (5) Celebrate the holy. The pathways are not a theology of celibacy, nor do they explain why one chooses a celibate lifestyle. Rather they describe how chastity is experienced and enacted, what some of the opportunities and struggles might be, and how the experience of celibacy can enrich priestly life and ministry. Sensible, thoughtful, sane, informed by real-life examples, and well-grounded in both Catholic spirituality and contemporary psychology, Living Celibacy will prove a valuable resource to all priests who seek to be loving, celibate men. Too often books on this important aspect of priestly life neglect the psychological dimensions of the celibacy, view it only from a "sacrificial" point of view, or rely on an overly abstract theology. But as a longtime priest and professional psychologist, Sonny Manuel brings a perspective on the celibate life that offers insights both spiritual and practical. This is an ideal book for anyone frorn-4 first-year seminarian to an experienced priest. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Though we often hear about the "gay problem" today, there is an even deeper problem in the church today--one that we often overlook. The call to follow Christ is a call to costly obedience for all, not just for gay Christians. Far too often, the church has elevated homosexuality above other sins and required a costly obedience from gays that it is unwilling to demand of others. And yet, the answer is not to weaken the demands of obedience. Instead, gay Christians who make the difficult choice to align their lives with the biblical view of sexuality are a gift to the church, reminding all of us that spiritual growth and maturity is costly. There is a price to pay in following Christ and devoting our lives to the call of the gospel, and it is one that we all must pay--gay and straight Christians alike. Through the stories and struggles of gay Christians who are reorienting their lives around the costly obedience required to follow Christ, Mark Yarhouse and Olya Zaporozhets call the church to reorient as well, leaving behind the casual morality that is widespread today to pursue the path of radical discipleship. Unlike any other book on homosexuality and the church, this is a call to examine your life and consider what God is asking you to lay down to take up your cross and follow him.

Book About Celibacy I Have No Instructions from the Lord

Download or read book About Celibacy I Have No Instructions from the Lord written by Carl R. Triebs and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The insistence on clerical celibacy was established in much of the Western Church beginning in the Fourth Century. It expanded slowly and unevenly throughout Late Antiquity and the early middle ages and at the Second Lateran Council in 1139 became Church Law. This Law of Celibacy decreed that Holy Orders were a absolute impediment to any in the higher clerical orders attempting to contract marriage. Any such marriage was automatically null and void in the eyes of the Church.

Book Celibacy in the Ancient World

Download or read book Celibacy in the Ancient World written by Dale Launderville and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celibacy is a commitment to remain unmarried and to renounce sexual relations, for a limited period or for a lifetime. Such a commitment places an individual outside human society in its usual form, and thus questions arise: What significance does such an individual, and such a choice, have for the human family and community as a whole? Is celibacy possible? Is there a socially constructive role for celibacy? These questions guide Dale Launderville, OSB, in his study of celibacy in the ancient cultures of Israel, Mesopotamia, and Greece prior to Hellenism and the rise of Christianity. Launderville focuses especially on literary witnesses, because those enduring texts have helped to shape modern attitudes and can aid us in understanding the factors that may call forth the practice of celibacy in our own time. Readers will discover how celibacy fits within a context of relationships, and what kinds of relationships thus support a healthy and varied society, one aware of and oriented to its cosmic destiny. Dale Launderville, OSB, is professor of theology at Saint John's University School of Theology/Seminary, Collegeville, Minnesota. He is the author of Piety and Politics: The Dynamics of Royal Authority in Homeric Greece, Biblical Israel, and Old Babylonian Mesopotamia (Eerdmans, 2003) and Spirit and Reason: The Embodied Character of Ezekiel's Symbolic Thinking (Baylor University Press, 2007).

Book excerpt: The Catholic Church is at present tearing itself to pieces over the issue of the law of clerical celibacy. It might seem to some only a marginal or administrative problem, but it in fact goes to the heart of the matter on every side of modern church life. It is, of course, first of all an issue of sexuality, originall deriving from a beleife that all sex produces moral impurity. But it has gone on to become an issue about power, about pastoral care, and about sheer honesty. The publication in English of Vogel's scholaraly study of the subject is immensely to be welcomed. -from the Foreword byAdrien Hastings

Book Altering the Altar

  • Author : S. Janetius
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2008-02-19
  • ISBN : 9781517015169

Download or read book Altering the Altar written by S. Janetius and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2008-02-19 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book primarily deals with three themes: the phenomenon of myth in the holy scriptures, celibacy and Catholic priesthood and the use of psychology in Catholic religious formation. All the themes are reflecting Catholic Christian doctrines. The book also contains few reflections on religion. The first part of the book, which narrates the phenomenon of myth in the New Testament, was written when I was fascinated by philosophy, theology, religion, and mysticism. I strongly believe today that religious language is mythical, religious practices are culture-specific and claiming this unique cultural concepts and interpretations as universal truth - which actually leads to fanaticism. The second part of the book talks about priestly celibacy in the Catholic Church. My interest in this topic started during my postgraduate studies in the Philippines, at De La Salle University, Manila, where I was introduced to Rev. Ed Kelly, an Irish Catholic Missionary Priest, married to a Filipina and settled in Manila. This connection made me to explore deep into the concept of canonical mandatory celibacy for Catholic priesthood. Also, I did a research in the unexplored area of married priests in the Philippines. Psychological screening in selection, renewal programs on adult development and midlife transition issues, lessons on the broader understanding of celibate love, friendship and living, the inclusion of psychology and psychotherapy in ongoing formation are gaining popularity. These scientific psychotherapeutic interventions are intended to help the candidates to discover their enslaving reactive behaviour patterns, which in turn would help them in responding to the demands of authentic religious life, Christian and human living. Mainly, the process of making the unconscious into conscious is often focused in order to attain freedom from the binding factors to attain psychospiritual integration. Besides these three major themes namely, the struggles of Bultmann's demythologization of New Testament, the mystified celibacy in Catholic priesthood and, how psychology could be utilized in a healthy way in the Catholic religious communities, the book also has few reflections on various topics related to religion and Christian living with a critical outlook.
