Book excerpt: Caxton College is an ancient seat of learning. Built at the time of William Caxton's death in 1491, its purpose has gone through several changes over the years. In this story it is a Theological College for young men, housing about a hundred students. Dr Alan Dunstan, Master of Calvin House, returning from his summer vacation in Scotland, expecting the new academic year to follow its usual course, was very alarmed to find that within weeks, disturbing undertones of a sinister nature were beginning to emerge. Who is behind it, and why? Would he and his little band of Pioneers be able to cope with this? Would they be able to retain their integrity and position as the pressures build against them?

Book Perkin Warbeck Conspiracy

Download or read book Perkin Warbeck Conspiracy written by Ian Arthurson and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2009-10-04 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perkin Warbeck, pretender to the English throne, claimed to be Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York & Norfolk, the younger of the two sons of Edward IV imprisoned in the Tower of London by Richard III, and whose true fate is unknown to this day. He led two attempts to claim the crown, but was captured by Henry VII and hanged at Tyburn. This book looks at who Warbeck really was, how he was used by those in power in Burgundy, France, Italy, Scotland and Ireland, and the progress of the conspiracy itself. It has often been considered to be a side issue to Henry's reign, but this book reveals how close the conspirators came to bringing about a fundamental change in European politics. Importantly, Ian Arthurson not only sets the plot within the context of what was happening in fifteenth-century Europe, but also reveals important truths about Henry's reign in England. Illustrated with a wealth of contemporary portraits, paintings, engravings and documents, The Perkin Warbeck Conspiracy will appeal to anyone with an interest in fifteenth-century history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporaries of Erasmus contains biographical information about more than 1900 people mentioned in the correspondence and other writings of Erasmus. This paperback edition is a reprint of the three-volume set published between 1985 and 1987. The volumes have been combined into a single volume ? without any editorial changes ? to provide a manageable and affordable edition of a magisterial work. The remarkable breadth of Erasmus? contacts throughout his life is reflected in this unique volume. Differing substantially from the national biographical dictionaries that restrict themselves to major figures, Contemporaries of Erasmus combines the famous with the obscure ? popes and politicians, artists and poets, knights and theologians ? covering every individual mentioned whose death occurred after the year 1450. Well known figures include Martin Luther, King Henry VIII, Machiavelli, Popes Nicholas V and Peter IV, and Emperor Charles V. Dipping into the pages of this fully illustrated volume will intrigue and delight the casual reader, but the combined volume will also be an indispensible tool for those who have searched in vain for a biographical dictionary of the Renaissance and the Reformation.

Book Whole Men

Download or read book Whole Men written by Kai Jensen and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kai Jensen takes a provocative look at masculinity in New Zealand literature. He argues that New Zealand writing around the Second World War was shaped by excitement about masculinity as a way of challenging society. Inspired partly by Marxism, writers such as A.R.D. Fairburn, Denis Glover, John Mulgan and Frank Sargeson linked national identity to the ordinary working man or soldier, and attempted to merge artistic activity and manliness in a new ideal, the whole man. This masculine excitement forged a literary and intellectual culture which was powerful for thirty years, and which discouraged women writers. Jensen suggests that the aftermath of masculinism still influences the way New Zealand intellectuals see themselves, and that the masculine tradition survives in the writing of Owen Marshall, Sam Hunt, Maurice Shadbolt and even Maurice Gee. At the same time he argues that masculinism underwent a process of change after its high point in the 1940s: Frank Sargeson's closeted homosexuality posed a complex problem for the masculine tradition and its historians, and James K. Baxter's symbolic, Jungian poetry was also hard to reconcile with the idea that men's writing must be based on robust experience. Yet Baxter prepared the masculine tradition for the 1960s and 1970s by renovating the whole man as bohemian lover. Whole Men is not just about one literary movement, but about how literary culture works, and how New Zealand intellectuals construct their identities.
