The Tudors were too astute to put much power into the hands of any who might contest their own far-fetched claim. They found keen men of moderate birth more convenient for their tortuous policies. The greatest statesmen of the day had but humble origins. Wolsey was an honest poor man's son Thomas Cromwell's father was a blacksmith. The Cavendishes had no such swift rise to fortune as these. They achieved the great position they have so long occupied by more evolutionary methods. For more than a century before Bosworth Field they had been landed men, and they had a judge of repute for their first ancestor. Still, Sir John de Cavendish was too late to fight at Hastings by some three hundred years. A longer pedigree than that had to be found for the lords of Chatsworth. Cavendish Office and, being unable to endure the noise and bustle of the town, to retire to quieter scenes of life. Some little time before his death, in 1893, he began to write his recollections, but not till last year were his papers examined. It then became evident that, although he kept a journal nearly all his life, Mr. Cavendish omitted from it much that was within his knowledge, and also that various interesting letters and documents to which he refers have vanished. In preparing his reminiscences it is obvious he had taken from his journal the ground work of many incidents with the intention of filling in later, at his leisure, details of light and shade drawn from the numerous memories stored in his retentive brain, but unfortunately the end came suddenly before he could complete his work. However, he recorded much, and the task of selection has not been on the whole an easy one. The editor can bear witness that Mr. Cavendish possessed a vast fund of anecdote of all kinds, and would give much to be able to recall a tithe of the many and various tales of society, politics, and diplomacy with which he was wont to regale his family and friends.
