They conceived the idea, that to destroy the superiority of Spain, England must plant a colony in the New World. Accordingly the former obtained a patent of colo nization in 1 78, and attempted to establish a settlement in the neighborhood of Newfoundland. The attempt proved futile, and in the effort the noble Gilbert was drowned in the waves of the angry ocean. His last words will ever be kept in precious remembrance: We are as near heaven by sea as by land. The latter - Sir Walter Raleigh - the most accomplished man of his age, and a cavalier in the best sense of theword, renewed the undertaking, and in 1587 established a colony on Roanoke Island, in Pam lico Sound. Success seemed to go with the enter prise, and Queen Elizabeth gave the name Vir ginia to all North America. But a crisis in the history of England arose, and the kingdom, confronted with the Armada and the whole embattled power of Spain, had to fight for her very existence In. The mighty strife, the little group of men, women and chil dren on Roanoke Island were forgotten, and when succo-r, after three years, at length arrived, the colony had disappeared. It places greatest emphasis on general move ments because American literature is first of all important as an expression of national life. There are few American writings that require careful analysis and merit intensive study as masterpieces. But in a nation where education has from the first been so generally diffused, literary attempts of slight artistic merit may reflect not only the obvious changes in national life and ideals, but subtler tendencies and aspira tions. For this reason attention is given not only to the few greater writers, but to many others whose works, though less important in themselves, are sometimes even more sig nificant. The plan of the book and the decision what to include and what to exclude have been influenced by the author's experiences with college classes but an attempt has been made to meet the wants of the general reader as well as those of the systematic student. In tracing tendencies and movements it has been necessary to adopt a geographical classification of authors; and this has sometimes been carried beyond the point where it is significant. It is a matter of the greatest importance whether an author represents the Spirit of Puritan New England or the spirit of Cavalier Virginia; it is of little importance whether he chances to write in New Hampshire or in Ver mont. For convenience, however, smaller as well as larger groupings have been made on the basis of residence. In adopting this plan the author wishes to disclaim any intention of over-emphasizing sectional differences. Yet he proved to be a brilliant Civil War commander from the moment he made his debut at Gettyshurg. At age twenty-five he was promoted to the rank of major general, a feat that earned him the sobriquet "the boy general." Following the war, as part of the frontier army, he was handed the task of protecting the railroads by reining in the Plains Indians. Resplendent in buckskin he steadily built a reputation as an Indian fighter, enhancing his legend with his own writings.
