Book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease

Download or read book How Tobacco Smoke Causes Disease written by United States. Public Health Service. Office of the Surgeon General and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Book Epidemiology A Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Epidemiology A Very Short Introduction written by Rodolfo Saracci and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-02-25 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is epidemiology? What are the causes of a new disease? How can pandemics be prevented? Epidemiology is the study of the changing patterns of disease and its main aim is to improve the health of populations. It's a vital field, central to the health of society, to the identification of causes of disease, and to their management and prevention. Epidemiology has had an impact on many areas of medicine; from discovering the relationship between tobacco smoking and lung cancer, to the origin and spread of new epidemics. However, it is often poorly understood, largely due to misrepresentations in the media. In this Very Short Introduction Rodolfo Saracci dispels some of the myths surrounding the study of epidemiology. He provides a general explanation of the principles behind clinical trials, and explains the nature of basic statistics concerning disease. He also looks at the ethical and political issues related to obtaining and using information concerning patients, and trials involving placebos. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

For instance, at the first outbreak at Cairo, the Jews' quarter, and the lowest and dirtiest part of the town, inhabited by the poorer classes, was alone attacked: at the next, this part of the town was spared, and the disease expended its fury on the Frank quarter--airy, elevated, and clean--inhabited only by Europeans and This extract was taken from one of the public journals, but through carelessness at the time I neglected to add the name of the journal, the writer of the letter, or the date of its insertion; but it was some time in 1857, while it was, if I remember right, an official communication, emanating from the Board of Health or the BegistrarGeneral's Office. rich natives and merchants. As no sanitary measures or improvements had been adopted in the interval of the two visitations, the exemption of the dirty and filthy part of Cairo could not, therefore, be referred to this cause. Besides, those who adduced the above example, forgot to state what the mortality was in 1849 at Newcastle. Not having any document to refer to, I am unable to say what the amount actually was, but I believe it to have been comparatively small. If so, it could not be referred to the absence of filth, the state of the town being the same in 1849 that it was in 1853. More than this, the visitation at Newcastle in 1853 was entirely local, and merely the avant courier of the more general outbreak in 1854; a phenomenon frequently observed as in England in 1831--the epidemic having appeared late in the Autumn, and then, after prevailing partially in a few localities, subsiding until the following Spring, when the disease became general. With such facts before us, it is impossible to draw any deduction from the exemption of Tynemouth in...

Book A Theory of the Causation and Suggestions for the Prevention of Dysentery

This book was released on 2017-06-04 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Theory of the Causation, and Suggestions for the Prevention, of Dysentery: Together With Hypotheses on the Causation, and Views as to the Prevention, of Typhoid, Cholera, Yellow Fever, Remittent, Diphtheria, Typhus, and Other Zymotic Diseases in Man and Animals But itwas on the strength of the conviction that I had solved the problem of the long hidden cause of Dysentery, that I made the attempt to ascertain the cause of Typhus, Typhoid, and Remittent, Fevers, Diphtheria, and Cholera. What measure of success I have had, is for the learned to say, or for the future to determine. I am sanguine enough to believe, that, if the doors to the sources of all these maladies have not been actually thrown open, the master key by which they will eventually be unlocked, is to be found in these pages. It will be understood, however, that I con sider the conclusions as to the origin of some of these dis eases, to have a far less solid foundation than the conclusions as to the origin of Dysentery. The probabilities that the problem of Dysentery has been correctly solved, are many greater than the probabilities that the true cause of 'typhus has been made out. Calculating these probabilities, and fixing those of Dysentery at 100, I take it theywould stand somewhat in this relation. Book Public Health Ethics Cases Spanning the Globe

Download or read book Public Health Ethics Cases Spanning the Globe written by Drue H. Barrett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access book highlights the ethical issues and dilemmas that arise in the practice of public health. It is also a tool to support instruction, debate, and dialogue regarding public health ethics. Although the practice of public health has always included consideration of ethical issues, the field of public health ethics as a discipline is a relatively new and emerging area. There are few practical training resources for public health practitioners, especially resources which include discussion of realistic cases which are likely to arise in the practice of public health. This work discusses these issues on a case to case basis and helps create awareness and understanding of the ethics of public health care. The main audience for the casebook is public health practitioners, including front-line workers, field epidemiology trainers and trainees, managers, planners, and decision makers who have an interest in learning about how to integrate ethical analysis into their day to day public health practice. The casebook is also useful to schools of public health and public health students as well as to academic ethicists who can use the book to teach public health ethics and distinguish it from clinical and research ethics.
