Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic University Bulletin, Vol. 16: January, 1910 The same French Socrates, when he reformed and refined the art of philosophizing, had raised hopes which those who came after had but dashed in turn. Men of a radical bent of mind, who looked to philosophy for social rather than individual better ment, naturally expected some golden grain from the promised harvest of reform, and were disappointed at the broken chaff well meant for grain that seemed to them to come instead. The sense of reality appeared to be on the wane. Prejudice was increasing against any philosophy that professed the duality of soul and body, subject and object. This latter pair of opposites, which anyone who took the pains might find dwelling amic ably together in his concrete experience, had been pried apart by the artifice of method until they became in the abstract the most deadly of enemies conceivable. Dualism seemed to have had its day and ceased to be. Monism in some form or other and there was no occasion for bemoaning lack of variety in the specimens, either before Descartes or after - replaced it. Hence forth the lamb was to lie down with the lion, not indeed beside him, but benevolently assimilated in a way not contemplated by the prophet Isaiah, or the poet Virgil. THOMAS.1 The domain of Philosophy is much wider than that of Psychology; but no member of a philosophical society, I am sure, would entertain a Theory of Things from which the nature of mind was excluded. On the other hand, it has been truly said that every principal psychological problem leads up to and lays heavily upon the very heart of reason itself a number of philosophical problems most important and most profound.2 This holds good not only of the elder psychology, as it is called, but also of the vigorous modern phase in which empirical and even experimental methods play the leading r61e. For the more we learn, itemwise, of our mental life, the more pressing becomes the need of a systematic view in which the ultimate nature of mind and its relations to all things else shall be adequately set forth. Prom this need there would seem to be no escape for any psychologist who dares to push his investigations to their logical conclusions. We may draw the line between Empirical Psychology and Rational Psychology, or confine Psychology within empirical limits in order to handle more freely the Philosophy of Mind, or finally we may marshal the facts of mind under some more comprehensive theory and speak of the Principles of Psychology; in any case, sooner or later, we must face the inevitable question: What is mind and how is it related to matter ? It is not, therefore, strange that when psychologists gather to discuss the outcome of experimental research, the culminating problems of their science should receive more than passing notice.
