Book Discovering A Lost Heritage the Catholic Origins of America

Download or read book Discovering A Lost Heritage the Catholic Origins of America written by Adam S. Miller and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2006-05 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eye-opening journey into America's past. Documents how much of the "history" that Americans have been taught in public and private schools and promoted in establishment history texts is at the least, distorted; at worst, it is myth. Before America became a land of predominantly English Protestants, it was a land explored and settled by Irish, Scottish, Spanish, and French Catholics. This work documents that the first known explorers, pioneers, and settlers of America were Catholic. Of the 48 Continental States, Catholics settled first in thirty-three, while Protestants were first in only fifteen. For example: Did you know:-that there were settlements by Catholics in New England before the Pilgrims arrived in 1620?-that Catholics had explored and established settlements in Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia before Jamestown was settled in 1607?-that Catholics had celebrated the truly first Thanksgiving feast in America eighty years before the Pilgrims did?

Book Commonwealth Catholicism

Download or read book Commonwealth Catholicism written by Gerald P. Fogarty and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commonwealth Catholicism is the first comprehensive history of the Catholic Church in the State of Virginia. Distinguished historian Gerald P. Fogarty tells the story of Virginia's Catholics in the state's history, from the colonial period to the present. Using archival resources, Fogarty brings to life the events and characters that comprise the Church's colorful and often turbulent history. Catholics in Virginia, as in other parts of the South, were a tiny minority from the beginning and remained so for much of their history. They gathered into small, isolated communities, often without a resident priest. The Catholic population in Virginia was so small, in fact, that there was only one diocese until 1974. Catholics were often suspected of unpatriotic sympathies by their Protestant neighbors and tried to remain unnoticed, blending in, as far as possible, with the prevailing Protestant culture. Full religious tolerance for Virginia Catholics did not come until the Revolution. Reconstructing the available documentary evidence, Fogarty tells the story of these early communities in full detail. Fogarty also brings to life many of the prominent actors in the unfolding drama. Father Matthew O'Keefe, the pastor of the Norfolk region from 1852 until 1886--a period of intense Know Nothing activity--is one example. O'Keefe was asked by two men calling at the rectory door to minister to a dying man. Reaching the Elizabeth River on the edge of Portsmouth, Virginia, the two said that the dying man lay further on. O'Keefe "took a pair of revolvers from his coat, placed the men under citizen's arrest, and marched them into Portsmouth where he turned them over to the sheriff. They subsequently confessed that they had been hired to assassinate him." Commonwealth Catholicism, a considerable accomplishment from one of the most prominent historians of American Catholicism, will remain for many years the definitive study on the subject of Virginia's Catholic heritage.

Book Catechism of the Catholic Church

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 3 million copies sold! Essential reading for Catholics of all walks of life. Here it is - the first new Catechism of the Catholic Church in more than 400 years, a complete summary of what Catholics around the world commonly believe. The Catechism draws on the Bible, the Mass, the Sacraments, Church tradition and teaching, and the lives of saints. It comes with a complete index, footnotes and cross-references for a fuller understanding of every subject. The word catechism means "instruction" - this book will serve as the standard for all future catechisms. Using the tradition of explaining what the Church believes (the Creed), what she celebrates (the Sacraments), what she lives (the Commandments), and what she prays (the Lord's Prayer), the Catechism of the Catholic Church offers challenges for believers and answers for all those interested in learning about the mystery of the Catholic faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a positive, coherent and contemporary map for our spiritual journey toward transformation.

Book excerpt: Youre Catholic and loving it--but when it comes to really celebrating your faith, things get a little vague. A home altar? Not likely. Sacramentals? Clueless. A blessing for beer? Never heard of it. Novenas? Parties in honor of saints? The Angelus? Scapulars? The time has come for a new generation to reclaim their Catholic heritage, including these and many other practices and prayers that have enriched Catholic life for centuries. Many traditional devotions have been neglected in recent decades, but authors Narendran and Salzmann have gathered together a rich variety in this book to help you celebrate Christ through all the days, weeks and months of the year.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The encyclopedia lists essential data on all Catholic colleges and universities and on all religious institutions of men and women, but it was not feasible to have a separate entry on each. Therefore, a representative selection was made and articles were written on some of the larger and smaller colleges and universities; and the same procedure was adopted with the religious orders and congregations. Unfortunately, space did not permit the inclusion of every important person or event in American Catholic history"--Introduction.
