The subject has been viewed from a somewhat different standpoint. It is freer, perhaps more actual; does not pretend to be professional is not authoritative. The picture may, therefore, in some sense, if not truer to nature, be yet more interesting, though it may fall short in professional turns and in a certain scientific touch and balance. This book was released on 2018-10-07 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Church of the Diocese of Trenton, N. J Hilst sending forth these sketches to the public we are fully aware how imperfect they are in many details, but as all students of history know how difficult and laborious is the task of collect ing historical data, we feel we can claim their kind indulgence. Therefore let this be considered only the basis of a better and more complete work, prepared by a more competent author. Much of the' early history of our Churches and Missions was never committed to writing, and many traditions of persons and places are forever lost because no one attempted the work we have undertaken. That the notes gathered within these pages will be of interest to our Catholic people we are sure, for these narratives record the heroic sacrifices and the devoted zeal with which were laid the foundations, so strong and deep, of Church and school at times when it was hard to be a Catholic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Catholic Church in Indiana, Vol. 1 of 2 Nothing of great importance has been overlooked or minimized nor has any considerable number of lesser matters been. Either neglected or exaggerated. Facts and events are eloquent even when simply narrated, and they are argumentative, too, when pre sented in the relation of cause and effect. As set forth in this history they tell of a Providence that directs the affairs of the church and bids Christians hope for the increase of the kingdom of God on earth. Being connected even as instruments in the furtherance of these things-a great distinction when properly considered - may we not indulge the hope also that our labors inay meet with the approval and receive the substantial support of those in whose interests they have been performed? Of the four modes already mentioned, or be referred to Jesus Christ, considered as man; since Scripture not unfrequently Speaks of Jesus Christ, i. E. Of Him who was afterwards called Jesus Christ, in such a manner as to preclude all doubt, that He did really exist and subsist, as the true and only offspring of His Father, before His birth, as man, of His mother Mary; and consequently (as he afterwards explains himself more fully) before the creation of the universe; and that in such a way, as that all things were made by Him, and that on that account He is Himself God. Book The Catholic Church Alone

Download or read book The Catholic Church Alone written by Henry Dodridge and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Church Alone: The One True Church of Christ, Sumptuously; Illustrated With Famous Paintings by the Great Masters As in corporal distempers a total loss of appetite, which no medicine can restore, forbodes certain decay and death; so in the spiritual life of the soul, a neglect or disrelish of pious readings and instruction is a most fatal symptom. What hopes can we entertain of a person to whom the science of virtue and eternal salvation doth not seem interesting or worth his application? "It is impossible," says St. Chrysostom, "that a man should be saved, who neglects assiduous pious reading." No less criminal and dangerous is the disposition of those who misspend their precious moments in reading romances, which fill the mind with a worldly spirit, with a love of vanity, pleasure, idleness, and trifling, which destroy and lay waste all the generous sentiments of virtue in the heart, and sow there the seeds of every vice, which extend their influence over the whole soul. Who seeks nourishment from poison? What food is to the body, that our thoughts and reflections are to the mind: by them the affections of the soul arc nourished. The chameleon changes its color as it is affected by sadness, anger, or joy, or by the color upon which it sits; and we see an insect borrow its lustre and hue from the plant or leaf upon which it feeds. In like manner, what our meditations and affections are, such will our souls become, either holy and spiritual, or earthly and carnal. By pious reading the mind is instructed and enlightened, and the affections of the heart are purified and inflamed. Reading religions books is commended by St. Paul as the summary of spiritual advice. (2 Tim. 14, 13.) Devout persons never want a spur to assiduous reading, or meditation; they are insatiable in this exercise, and according to the golden motto of Thomas a Kempis, they find their chief delight in a closet with a good book. Worldly and tepid Christians stand certainly in the most need of this help to virtue. The world is a whirlpool of business, pleasure and sin. Its torrent is always beating upon their hearts, ready to break in and bury them under its flood, unless frequent pious reading oppose a strong fence to its waves. The more deeply a person is immersed in its tumultuous cares, so much the greater ought his solicitude to be to seek repose, after the fatigues and dissipations of business and company; to plunge his heart by secret prayer in the ocean of the divine immensity, and by pious reading to afford his soul some spiritual reflection; as the wearied husbandman, returning from his labor, recruits his spent vigor and exhausted strength by allowing his body necessary refreshment and repose. Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, has declared that He was sent by His heavenly Father "to preach the Gospel to the poor." Book The Holy Catholic Church

Download or read book The Holy Catholic Church written by Henry Barclay Swete and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Catholic Church: The Communion of Saints; A Study in the Apostles Creed This book contains the substance of courses of lectures given at Cambridge in 1913-14 to classes consisting chiefly of candidates for the ministry of the Church of England. There are few questions of more practical importance to Christian people, whether clergy or laity, than those which are raised by a study of the character, the work, and the functions of the Catholic Church. Upon the answer which we give to those questions depends our attitude, as individuals, towards the great society of which we are members. It determines for each of us whether he shall march in the war against sin and unbelief as a soldier in the army of Christ, under the command of its officers, conscious of the honour and the joy of serving in the ranks of a trained and disciplined force; or as an irresponsible adventurer, brave and loyal at heart, but a member of an irregular company, which follows no leaders but such as are chosen by itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Roman Catholic Church: Its Law and Its Literature True, some of the Protestant churches are accumulating far more property, than is good for the spiritual welfare. They imitate the bad example of the Romanists, in building cathedrals which smack too much of mere human pride. The expensive church. Requires the Rich Man, and the Rich Man takes the life out of the church. The Baptist preacher cannot denounce Rockefeller's Colorado infamies, and his Standard Oil criminalities, when Rockefeller is sitting on a front bench ready to pour Standard Oil and Coal Trust money into the churchs yawning treasury. A corporation like Trinity Church, in New York, is a national scandal. The State should exert her sovereign powers, under the law of Eminent Domain, and take over all such vast and unnecessary church properties; and, after duly providing funds for the continuance of strictly religious work, should apply the surplus to public education, mothers' pensions, and similar charities. Book The Catholic Faith in Practice

Download or read book The Catholic Faith in Practice written by Francis Underhill and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Faith in Practice: In English Parishes It might have been thought that a method which in general outline has been worked with such excellent results throughout the great body of the Catholic Church would have been accepted by the leaders of the English Church without the opposition with which the Catholic Revival has been almost every where met. It is indeed true that if the method of working out of the Catholic Revival in all its implications is a circumstance which ought to cause trembling, then there are good grounds for fear for there is no doubt whatever that the movement is making ground everywhere, among clergy and lay people alike. It is being found highly effective, and the need for a living religion which has been brought home to us by the War is making its suppression an impossibility.
