Book The Catholic Church Alone

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Catholic Church Alone: The One True Church of Christ, Sumptuously; Illustrated With Famous Paintings by the Great Masters As in corporal distempers a total loss of appetite, which no medicine can restore, forbodes certain decay and death; so in the spiritual life of the soul, a neglect or disrelish of pious readings and instruction is a most fatal symptom. What hopes can we entertain of a person to whom the science of virtue and eternal salvation doth not seem interesting or worth his application? "It is impossible," says St. Chrysostom, "that a man should be saved, who neglects assiduous pious reading." No less criminal and dangerous is the disposition of those who misspend their precious moments in reading romances, which fill the mind with a worldly spirit, with a love of vanity, pleasure, idleness, and trifling, which destroy and lay waste all the generous sentiments of virtue in the heart, and sow there the seeds of every vice, which extend their influence over the whole soul. Who seeks nourishment from poison? What food is to the body, that our thoughts and reflections are to the mind: by them the affections of the soul arc nourished. The chameleon changes its color as it is affected by sadness, anger, or joy, or by the color upon which it sits; and we see an insect borrow its lustre and hue from the plant or leaf upon which it feeds. In like manner, what our meditations and affections are, such will our souls become, either holy and spiritual, or earthly and carnal. By pious reading the mind is instructed and enlightened, and the affections of the heart are purified and inflamed. Reading religions books is commended by St. Paul as the summary of spiritual advice. (2 Tim. 14, 13.) Devout persons never want a spur to assiduous reading, or meditation; they are insatiable in this exercise, and according to the golden motto of Thomas a Kempis, they find their chief delight in a closet with a good book. Worldly and tepid Christians stand certainly in the most need of this help to virtue. The world is a whirlpool of business, pleasure and sin. Its torrent is always beating upon their hearts, ready to break in and bury them under its flood, unless frequent pious reading oppose a strong fence to its waves. The more deeply a person is immersed in its tumultuous cares, so much the greater ought his solicitude to be to seek repose, after the fatigues and dissipations of business and company; to plunge his heart by secret prayer in the ocean of the divine immensity, and by pious reading to afford his soul some spiritual reflection; as the wearied husbandman, returning from his labor, recruits his spent vigor and exhausted strength by allowing his body necessary refreshment and repose. Our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, has declared that He was sent by His heavenly Father "to preach the Gospel to the poor." Book excerpt: THE ONE TRUE CHURCH The Only Church That Christ Established is the Catholic Church By Father Damen 1855 "He that believeth an is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be condemned." Mark xvi. 16. My Dearly Beloved Christians: -From these words of our Divine Saviour, it has already been proved to you, that faith in necessary for salvation, and without faith there is no salvation; without faith there is eternal damnation. Read you own Protestant Bible, 16th verse of St. Mark, and you will find it stronger there than in the Catholic Bible. Now then, what kind of faith must a man have to be saved? Will any faith do? Why, if any faith will do, the devil himself will be saved, for the Bible says the devils believe and tremble. It is, therefore, not a matter of indifference what religion a man professes; he must profess the right and true religion, and without that there is no salvation, for it stands to reason, my dear people, that if God reveals a thing or teaches a thing, He wants to be believed. Not to believe is to insult God. Doubting His words, or to believe even with doubt and hesitating, is an insult to God, because it is doubting His Sacred Word. We must, therefore, believe without doubting, without hesitating. I have said, our of the Catholic Church there is no divine faith-can be no divine faith out of that Church. Some of the Protestant friends will be shocked at this, to hear me say that out of the Catholic Church there is no divine faith, and that without faith there is no salvation, but damnation. I will prove all I have said. I have said that out of the Catholic Church there can be no divine faith. What is divine faith? When we believe a thing upon the authority of God, and believe it without doubt, without hesitating. Now, all our separated brethren outside of the Catholic Church take the private interpretation of the Bible for their guide; but the private interpretation of the Bible can never give them divine faiths.

Book excerpt: The Bible tells us that all are sinners in need of a Savior. Sin, therefore, does not discriminate between different Christians and their religious denominations. The content of this book represents over thirty years of personal experience, research, observation, study, and prayer; in an effort to demonstrate through the Bible, and through history, that "The One True Church" is not an institutional church or a specific religious denomination, but rather all true believers who belong to the "Body of Christ." Today, many Catholics and non-Catholics alike, struggle to understand Catholic traditions, from a Biblical perspective. Over the centuries the Catholic Church has evolved into a complex religious organization of beliefs, rules, rituals, and requirements; described as "speculative and mystical theology," by a leading Catholic apologist, who says that most Catholics do not fully understand, and can't explain their faith to others. This book can be a useful resource for these and others, who have an interest in understanding what Catholics teach and what Protestants believe. - From the Prologue Joe Weller was born in 1945 into a working class family in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and spent his childhood in the South, in an era when Catholics were a minority, and there was an overt prejudice against blacks, Jews, and Catholics. Joe spent twelve years in the Catholic parochial school system, and later in life was a member of a number of parishes in Memphis, Miami, Dallas, and Los Angeles. Joe shares what he has learned over the last thirty years in his educational journey from the traditions and history of Catholicism, to the teachings of the Bible in; The One True Church: A Biblical Perspective on Catholic Tradition and History. Joe's desire is to encourage all those interested in this subject to take their own educational journey through the pages of Scripture, to experience God's amazing truth for themselves.

Book excerpt: "How can you believe all this stuff? This is the number-one question Catholics get asked and, sometimes, we ask ourselves. Why do we believe that God exists, that he became a man and came to save us, that what looks like a wafer of bread is actually his body? Why do we believe that he inspired a holy book and founded an infallible Church to teach us the one true way to live? Ever since he became Catholic, Trent Horn has spent a lot of time answering these questions, trying to explain to friends, family, and total strangers the reasons for his Catholic faith. Some didn't believe in God, or even in the existence of truth. Others said they were spiritual but didn't think you needed religion to be happy. Some were Christians who thought Catholic doctrines over-complicated the pure gospel. And some were fellow Catholics who had a hard time understanding everything they professed to believe on Sunday. Why We're Catholic assembles the clearest, friendliest, most helpful answers that Trent learned to give to all these people and more. Beginning with how we can know reality and ending with our hope of eternal life, it s the perfect way to help skeptics and seekers (or Catholics who want to firm up their faith) understand the evidence that bolsters our belief and brings us joy" --

Book Let There Be No Divisions Among You

Download or read book Let There Be No Divisions Among You written by Rev John Maclaughlin and published by Sophia Institute Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With clear, compelling logic bolstered by countless Scriptural confirmations, Fr. John MacLaughlin here considers the oft-heard claim that it doesn't matter what Christian denomination you join, so long as you're sincere. Formally known as Indifferentism, this view has in recent centuries taken deep root among Christians. Indeed, indifferentism is the enemy not only of Protestantism and Catholicism, but of Christ Himself, who revealed to His apostles scores of truths about Himself and the way of salvation, never encouraging them to pick and choose among those truths. Not only then, argues Fr. MacLaughlin, is one Christian denomination not as good as another; embracing the wrong one can lead a good-hearted soul into utter unbelief, jeopardizing his salvation. For this reason, Fr. MacLaughlin devotes the second half of this immensely popular book to delineating for readers the two fundamental characteristics that will ever and always be found in the one Church that Christ founded and to which he intends all men and women to belong. Among the things you will learn here: How indifferentism threatens your salvationWhere Christ forbids preaching some doctrines while ignoring othersThe two marks the of the true church delineated by Christ HimselfDenominational lethargy: how sticking with the Faith you were born into can violate the First Commandment . . . and risk your salvationDecrees of the Council of Jerusalem (ca. 50 a.d.): proof that the apostles themselves denied that one Christian faith is as good as anotherHow consideration of indifferentism draws inquirers to the true churchHow the profusion of Protestant sects reveals the need for a final authorityThe universality of the True Church: lt existed already at Pentecost, before the Church spread beyond Jerusalem (and one Church has that very same universality today)The religion revealed by Christ: In its essentials, it's clear, definite, unchanging. Is yours?

Book One Holy Catholic and Apostolic

Download or read book One Holy Catholic and Apostolic written by Kenneth Whitehead and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2010-09-16 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very often in the history of Christianity, "reformers", by whatever name, have aspired to return to "the early Church". The Church of their own day, for whatever reason, fails to live up to what they think Christianity should be: in their view there has been a falling away from the beautiful ideals of the early Church. Kenneth Whitehead shows in this book how the early Church has, in fact, not disappeared, but rather has survived and persisted, and is with us still. "Reformers" are not so much the ones needed by this Church as are those who aspire to be saints-to follow Christ seriously and always to fulfill God's holy will by employing the means of sanctification which Christ continues to provide in the Church. Whitehead shows how the visible body which today bears the name "the Catholic Church" is the same Church which Christ established to carry on and perpetuate in the world his Words and his Works-and his own divine Life-and to bring salvation and sanctification to all mankind. Despite superficial differences in certain appearances, the worldwide Catholic Church today remains the same Church that was originally founded by Jesus Christ on Peter and the other apostles back in the first century in the ancient Near East. The early Church, in other words, was always!-nothing else but-the Catholic Church.
