Book The Cathedrals of England and Wales Their History Architecture and Associations Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book The Cathedrals of England and Wales Their History Architecture and Associations Vol 2 of 2 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-02 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedrals of England and Wales, Their History, Architecture and Associations, Vol. 2 of 2: With a Series of Rembrandt Plates and Many Illustrations in the Text The documentary history of Lichfield Cathedral is unusually imper fect, and the date of the building of the first church on the Site can only be determined approximately. But from the Venerable Bede we learn that St. Chad's remains were translated from the mother church at Stowe to the new church of St. Peter, the first of the three cathedrals to be reared on the present site. This church of St. Peter must there fore have been in existence some time before the year 735, when Bede died. It was no doubt a comparatively small and humble structure. After the Conquest this work of English hands was replaced by a Norman church on a grander scale, but here again the exact date of the re building is uncertain. This church also, with the exception of a few fragments, has vanished. It was gradually rebuilt, after it had stood for rather more than a century, the western part of the choir, the oldest portion of the present cathedral, being probably begun about the year 1200. The south transept was next taken in hand, followed some few years later by the north transept; for one at least of these is known, from an old grant giving a right of quarrying stone, to have been in progress about the year 1235. Next the nave was rebuilt, the work being begun about the middle of the same century; and the west front, which does not appear to have been constructed quite continuously with the rest, is dated about 1275. The architects now again took in hand the eastern part of the choir. The work executed at the beginning of the century was destroyed, and the present presbytery and Lady Chapel were erected, the latter being the earlier, and the work being completed about the year 1325. Book The Cathedrals of England and Wales Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Cathedrals of England and Wales Vol 1 of 2 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedrals of England and Wales, Vol. 1 of 2: Their History, Architecture, and Associations; With a Series of Rembrandt Plates and Many Illustrations in the d104 To the scathe wrought by Reformers and Puritans many references will be found in these pages. But it is questionable whether our cathedrals have suffered much more from iconoclastic rage than from the neglect and vandalism to which they were exposed when sectarian violence had done its worst. One may suspect, indeed, that Cromwell's men have been saddled with not a little blame that belongs rather to the custodians of our churches during that dismal eighteenth century which may be called the dark age of architecture. In any case, it is at least as easy for the historic sense to find extenuation for ebullitions of frenzied zeal at times of national tumult as for callous and slothful indifference. In the present volumes no rigid system of arrangement has been attempted. Canterbury, York, and St. Paul's come first, and after them Durham and Winchester, but for the rest, except that the more recent cathedrals bring up the rear of the English churches, and that the Welsh churches form a group by themselves, the order has been prescribed by nothing more technical than a regard for variety. The Editor has enjoyed free access to the pages of The Cathedral Churches of England and Wales, published some years ago under the competent and judicious editorship of Professor Bonney, and containing much matter of permanent value. He desires to acknowledge indebtedness also to Mr. John Murray's classic Handbook, to the excellent monographs in Bell's Cathedral Series, to the fresh and luminous studies of Mr. Francis Bumpus, to Sir Gilbert Scott's Personal and Professional Recollections, and to the volumes of The British Isles. Book Cathedrals Abbeys and Churches of England and Wales Vol 2

This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cathedrals, Abbeys and Churches of England and Wales, Vol. 2: Descriptive, Historical, Pictorial The situation of the church is hardly less fine. The town is built upon a hill, of which the castle occupies one edge. From it the ground shelves upwards, to form a broad and moderately level plateau; and on the highest part of this a church was built, which has for centuries been the mother-church of the town. Thus, from far and wide, from windings of the valley, from many an undulation of the neighbouring district, its lofty tower forms a conspicuous landmark, indi cating the position of the county town, and calling up memories of a family whose power at one time was little less than regal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedrals of England and Wales, Vol. 2 of 2: 120 Photographs, With Short Notes; Southern Section St. Albans - This cathedral was built by the Normans, with Roman tiles originally in the walls of Verulamium. The nave is in three styles, viz., Norman, Early English, and Decorated, and on some of the Norman work there are paintings of probably the same date. In the triforium of the south transept may be seen some Saxon balusters taken from the second church on the site. The reredos is fine, resembling the one at Winchester. Chichester. - Oi late years the building has been much restored, but contains some good Norman work which exhibits much of the cable moulding. The nave, like Manchester, has five aisles formed by the addition of side chapels. The Bell Tower or Campanile is the only instance in England of the tower being separated from the cathedral.
