Book excerpt: The Cathedral Church Of Oxford: A Description Of Its Fabric And A Brief History Of The Episcopal See This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: The cathedral church of Christ in Oxford - better known as Christ Church Cathedral - was established in 1546. It forms one half of Christ Church, the unique joint foundation of cathedral and university college created by King Henry VIII.Today's cathedral occupies the site of a monastery founded in the late seventh century by Frideswide, patron saint of Oxford and its university. In the early twelfth century it was re-founded as an Augustinian priory, and 400 years later it met its nemesis in Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, whose plan for an Oxford college grander than any other caused its dissolution. But when the cardinal fell from royal favour, the priory church was saved. The King's Cathedral is the first account of the convent, priory and cathedral for nearly a century. Judith Curthoys - author of two previous volumes on Christ Church - has drawn widely on scholarly research into the cathedral's archaeology, architecture and history for her fascinating and accessible new study of this historic building.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cathedral Church of Oxford: A Description of Its Fabric and a Brief History of the Episcopal See This series of monographs has been planned to supply visitors to the great English Cathedrals with accurate -and well illustrated guide books at a popular price. The aim of each writer has been to produce a work compiled with sufficient knowledge and scholarship to be of value to the student of archaeology and history, and yet not too technical in language for the use of an ordinary visitor or tourist. To specify all the authorities which have been made use of in each case would be difficult and tedious in this place. But amongst the general sources of information which have been almost invariably found useful are: - firstly, the great county histories, the value of which, especially in questions of genealogy and local records, is generally recognised; secondly, the numerous papers by experts which appear from time to time in the transactions of the antiquarian and archaeological societies; thirdly, the important documents made accessible in the series issued by the Master of the Rolls; fourthly, the wellknown works of Britton and Willis on the English Cathedrals; and lastly, the very excellent series of Handbooks to the Cathedrals, originated by the late Mr. John Murray, to which the reader may in most cases be referred for fuller detail, especially in reference to the histories of the respective sees. Book The History and Antiquities of the Cathedral Church of Oxford

Download or read book The History and Antiquities of the Cathedral Church of Oxford written by John Britton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Antiquities of the Cathedral Church of Oxford: Illustrated by a Series of Engravings, Views, Plans, Elevations, Sections, and Details of That Edifice; With Biographical Anecdotes of the Bishops, and of Other Eminent Persons Connected With the Church It is my wish, as it is my duty, to please all classes of readers, if possible but when this cannot be done, I must endeavour to satisfy the demands Of those who are presumed to have the most taste on such subjects, and improve the knowledge and judgment of others who are not too arrogant to receive instruction, or too obstinately determined in their own theories to admit the evidence of facts. When I commenced the Cathedral Antiquities, I fancied that perspective and picturesque views of those noble edifices, would be satisfactory to nearly all classes of readers but I soon perceived my error, and found that they afforded no practical information to the architect, or to the fastidious antiquary. They required correct geometrical elevations, sections, and details; because these only gave the true forms and proportions of arches, columns, and other members of buildings. Some perspective views are now, as they will hereafter, be introduced, principally to show the effects of a Whole building, or of such portions as are distinguished for archi tectural beauty, grandeur, or combination. To dr. Smith, the treasurer of Christ Church, I present my best acknowledgments for many acts of civility: to john nash, Esq., architect to the king; to the rev. Jos. Coneybeare, and to the rev. James ingram, I am also obliged 'for kind and friendly assistance in promoting my researches. The present history and illustrations have been long in progress, but unavoidable delays have arisen, from causes, which I could not control; a detail of which it will be useless to repeat. The work is now respectfully submitted to the kindness and candour Of the reader; and it is confidently hoped that he will exercise both these generous qualities in the examination of, and in' his comments on, its execution.
