A Sicilian Romance: Julia and Emilia, daughters of the cold-hearted Marquis of Mazzini, grow up well-protected on their father's castle while their father resides in Naples. But the quiet idyll quickly comes to an end when her father and his handsome wife arrive and set up for a longer stay. Henceforth, splendid celebrations are celebrated on the country estate. From the midst of the cult of sensibility, Ann Radcliffe rose with her very own poignant style to write her first gothic novel and hugely formative "The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne" (1789). Set in the Scottish Highlands, it tells the story of two castles: one belonging to the kind and goodhearted Matilda and her children, the other to the evil Baron Malcolm. The young heir Osbert seeks revenge against Malcolm who is responsible for the death of Osbert’s father. The novel is a quest for family honour, love, and vengeance where romantic passion and dangerous escapades intertwine until the very end. Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) was a British fiction writer, best known for her pioneering role in the English gothic tradition. She married a journalist and in his long absences, she began to write. Her works exhibit a preference for exotic and sinister places, where her female protagonists often suffer supernatural occurrences. Her best known novels include "The Mysteries of Udolpho", "The Italian", and "A Sicilian Romance".

Book excerpt: The novel is a set in a powerful landscape which became familiar in her later work, with complex clan feuds and mysterious romantic intrigues played out against a backdrop of ruined medieval castles and rugged Scottish coastlines. Each of the characters can be defined by their passions: The present Earl of Athlin, Osbert, is driven by a passionate desire to avenge his father's murder at the hand of Malcolm, the Baron of Dunbayne. His sister, Mary, is ever swooning and fainting in an attempt to resist her passion for Alleyn, a highlander not of noble birth (and therefore unworthy).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne, a tale of two warring Highland clans, was Radcliffe's first novel. Sir Walter Scott wrote of it, "We can now trace some germs of that taste and talent for the wild, romantic and mysterious, which the authoress afterwards employed with such effect." One of the qualities that Mrs. Radcliffe possessed that made her so popular around the world was her ability to create poetic descriptions of the scenery in countries that she had never visited. Keats tweaked Radcliffian attitudes when he wrote to a friend, "I'll tip you a Damosel Radcliffe. I'll cavern you and grotto you and waterfall you and immense-rock you and solitude you." Byron quipped in a letter, "I am going out this evening in my Cloak and Gondola-here are two nice Mrs. Radcliffe words for you."
