Book excerpt: The Castle Spectre was first performed at Drury Lane Theatre in London in 1797 and quickly became a dramatic standard during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Lewis' Gothic play was one of the first to combine the action on stage with both music and special effects in order to evoke an emotional overload from theatre-goers. It was quite common, according to contemporary accounts, for members of the audience to pass out from fright during performances of The Castle Spectre. The Playwright, Matthew Lewis, was one of the originators of early Literary Gothic with his novel, The Monk. This edition includes the text of the original five-act play, a condensed three-act version, biographies of the original performers, newspaper adverts, contemporary reviews and critiques, the original musical score, and a critical introduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been reviled, dismissed, attacked, and occasionally been the subject of Congressional hearings, but still, the genre of music known as heavy metal maintains not only its market share in the recording and downloading industry, but also as a cultural force that has united millions of young and old fans across the globe. Characterized by blaring distorted guitars, drum solos, and dramatic vibrato, the heavy metal movement headbanged its way to the popular culture landscape with bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath the 1970s. Motley Crue and Metallica made metal a music phenomenon in the 1980s. Heavy metal continues to evolve today with bands like Mastodon and Lamb of God. Providing an extensive overview of the music, fashion, films, and philosophies behind the movement, this inclusive encyclopedia chronicles the history and development of heavy metal, including sub-movements such as death metal, speed metal, grindcore, and hair metal. Essential and highly entertaining reading for high school and undergraduate courses in popular music studies, communications, media studies, and cultural studies, the Encyclopedia of Heavy Metal Music and Culture offers a guide to the ultimate underground music, exploring its rich cultural diversity, resilience, and adaptability. Entries for musicians include a discography for those wanting to start or develop their music collections.

Book Experiencing war as the enemy other

Download or read book Experiencing war as the enemy other written by Wendy Ugolini and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italy’s declaration of war on Britain in June 1940 had devastating consequences for Italian immigrant families living in Scotland signalling their traumatic construction as the ‘enemy other’. Through an analysis of personal testimonies and previously unpublished archival material, this book takes a case study of a long-established immigrant group and explores how notions of belonging and citizenship are undermined at a time of war. Overall, this book considers how wartime events affected the construction or Italian identity in Britain. It makes a groundbreaking and original contribution to the social and cultural history of Britain during World War Two as well as the wider literature on war, memory and ethnicity. It will appeal to scholars and students of British and Scottish cultural and social history and the history of World War II.

As the most comprehensive compilation of American homophones (words that sound alike) and homographs (look-alikes), this latest edition serves well where even the most modern spell-checkers and word processors fail--although rain, reign, and rein may be spelled correctly, the context in which these words may appropriately be used is not obvious to a computer.

Book Offshoot

    Book Details:
  • Author : Donna Lee Brien
  • Publisher : UWAP Scholarly
  • Release : 2018
  • ISBN : 9781742589626
  • Pages : 358 pages

Download or read book Offshoot written by Donna Lee Brien and published by UWAP Scholarly. This book was released on 2018 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offshoot includes essays in life writing methodologies and approaches, as well as a series of creative work-poetry and prose-that engages with current life writing. This collection highlights the development and influence of the genre in the twenty-first century. Starting from the premise that life writing is a significant component of both contemporary artistic practice and scholarship, Offshoot provides a necessary re-evaluation of the mode, its contemporary sub-generic incarnations, as well as methodological and practical approaches. The book presents research on a wide range of approaches, including both traditional areas-such as literature and creative writing-and areas that have not previously been associated with life writing scholarship. With its multifaceted readings, Offshoot signals a shift in life writing research tending towards an expansive, hybrid, experimental, and rhizomic approach.
