Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dreamer of the Castle of Indolence: And Other Poems My father's editorial work in connection with James Thomson Shelley, Lamb, Traherne, and Strode occupied much of the time he was able to spare for literature, and would alone be enough to keep his name in remembrance; but when it can be viewed as a whole I feel sure his original work is sufficient, both in bulk and distinctive merit, to warrant the hope that it will give his name a still higher rank, and assure for him a permanent reputation as a poet. Book The Seasons and the Castle of Indolence

Download or read book The Seasons and the Castle of Indolence written by J. Logie Robertson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seasons and the Castle of Indolence: With Biographical Notice, Introductions, Notes, and a Glossary Thomson has special recommendations as a British classic for the use of youth. Not only does he look upon Nature with the eye of a poet - and there is hardly an aspect of Nature that he has failed to note - but his descriptions possess such a power of freshness and fidelity, conveyed for the most part in language of astonishing felicity, that the heart must be dull indeed which they cannot inspire with interest and even rouse to enthusiasm. It is not too much to say that a love for Thomson's poetry in early life implies a permanent delight in the phenomena of rural Nature and an unfailing response to her restorative influences. It might be added that Thomson furnishes in The Seasons the best introduction to the study of Wordsworth's poetry, - if indeed the heart that has felt the charm of the earlier and more ingenuous poet be not satisfied to rest content with his teaching and to seek no farther. In The Castle of Indolence the same love of Nature and rural life which animates The Seasons is continually revealed in passages of exquisite beauty, and in the second Canto there is, more particularly, much sympathetic writing on the advantages of an open-air life of active industry which is surely very capable of inspiring and directing the energies of healthy youth. The text of The Seasons adopted in the present edition is of course that of the year 1746, which was the last to receive the author's personal revision. Book The Seasons Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seasons: With the Castle of IndolenceWhen the Author of the seasons came to London in pursuit of patronage and'fame, his first want, as his biographer informs us, was a pair of shoes. For the supply of all his necessities, his whole fund was his winter, which for a time could find no pur chaser; till, at last, Mr. Millar, a bookseller in the Strand, was persuaded to buy it at a low price; and this low price he had for some time reason to regret. We are not informed what estimate Thom son himself had formed of his production: whether with self-supported confidence he anticipated the reception it would eventually meet with from the public, or whether he was satisfied to dispose of his unproductive treasure for a sum that provided for the wants of the moment - as he would have disposed of a precious stone of uncertain value to the first lapi dary who would set a price upon it. In his most san guine and ambitious moments he could not have ven tared to hope, that the poem would ultimately not only amply reward its purchaser, but take its rank among productions which are considered as, eras in our literature, and become identified with the lan guage.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
