  • Pages : 134 pages

Book excerpt: Funny and sometimes shocking stories behind the scenes of major sports events are revealed for the first time in this unusual book. Alex Cheng, president of a company in California that was the North American distributor for Omega Sports Timing, shares his observations in a candid and casual style. His company, Seagull, Inc., was involved in timing systems and scoreboards for the Olympics in Montreal and Lake Placid, Pan Am Games in Mexico City, Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, the Canada Games and many events in skiing, swimming, track and field, car racing, horse racing, rodeos, boat racing, skateboard races, firemen's musters and other sports. This book is sheer entertainment for anyone interested in a variety of sports from a new perspective or how a small company coped with a somewhat frenetic business. At the same time, you will learn fascinating sports facts that will impress your friends. For example: - Did you know runners are timed to 1/100 of a second based on the first part of the torso crossing the line? How is this decided with absolute accuracy? - Did you know the Montreal Olympics main stadium faced a grid lock of construction cranes and was only half finished when the Games began? And this is common with many Olympics! - Did you know the beeping count-down clock next to skiers about to start their race has nothing to do with their actual start time? - Have you wondered what it was like in the hockey stadium on the night of the "Miracle on Ice" victory in Lake Placid? - Do you know why Olympic style sailboat racing is amazingly similar to barrel racing in rodeos? (You won't find this anywhere else!)

Book Body and World

    Book Details:
  • Author : Samuel Todes
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2001-04-27
  • ISBN : 0262264919
  • Pages : 385 pages

Download or read book Body and World written by Samuel Todes and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2001-04-27 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Body and World is the definitive edition of a book that should now take its place as a major contribution to contemporary existential phenomenology. Samuel Todes goes beyond Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty in his description of how independent physical nature and experience are united in our bodily action. His account allows him to preserve the authority of experience while avoiding the tendency towards idealism that threatens both Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty. Todes emphasizes the complex structure of the human body; front/back asymmetry, the need to balance in a gravitational field, and so forth; and the role that structure plays in producing the spatiotemporal field of experience and in making possible objective knowledge of the objects in it. He shows that perception involves nonconceptual, but nonetheless objective forms of judgment. One can think of Body and World as fleshing out Merleau-Ponty's project while presciently relating it to the current interest in embodiment, not only in philosophy but also in psychology, linguistics, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and anthropology. Todes's work opens new ways of thinking about problems such as the relation of perception to thought and the possibility of knowing an independent reality; problems that have occupied philosophers since Kant and still concern analytic and continental philosophy.

Book Rediscovering Nancy Drew

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rediscovering Nancy Drew is a rich collection of literary memories and insightful cultural comments."--Journal of Children's Literature "Nancy, especially the Nancy of the original story, is our bright heroine, chasing down the shadows, conquering our worst fears, giving us a glimpse of our brave and better selves, proving to everybody exactly how admirable and wonderful a thing it is to be a girl. Thank you, Nancy Drew."--Nancy Pickard "Nancy Drew belongs to a moment in feminist history; it is a moment, I suggest, that we celebrate, allowing ourselves the satisfaction of praising her for what she dared and forgiving her for what she failed to undertake or understand."--Carolyn G. Heilbrun "Rediscovering Nancy Drew lights up the territory. It informs, delights, and acknowledges through love and scholarship a debt long overdue."--Dale H. Ross In 1991, women staff and faculty at the University of Iowa discovered that the pseudonymous author of the original Nancy Drew books, Carolyn Keene, was none other than Mildred Wirt Benson, the first person to earn a master's degree in journalism at Iowa. The excitement caused by their discovery led to the 1993 Nancy Drew Conference, which explored the remarkable passion for Nancy Drew that spans a wide spectrum of American society. The result: a lively collaboration of essays by and interviews with mystery writers, collectors, publishers, librarians, scholars, journalists, and fans which presents a spirited, informative, totally enjoyable tribute to the driver of that blue roadster so many readers have coveted.

Book Photography Temporality and Modernity

Download or read book Photography Temporality and Modernity written by Kris Belden-Adams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the photography’s unique capacity to represent time with a degree of elasticity and abstraction. Part object-study, part cultural/philosophical history, it examines the medium’s ability to capture and sometimes "defy" time, while also traveling as objects across time-and-space nexuses. The book features studies of understudied, widespread, practices: studio portraiture, motion studies, panoramas, racing photo finishes, composite college class pictures, planetary photography, digital montages, and extended-exposure images. A closer look at these images and their unique cultural/historical contexts reveals photography to be a unique medium for expressing changing perceptions of time, and the anxiety its passage provokes.
