Book The Case of the Miami Vigilante

Download or read book The Case of the Miami Vigilante written by S.N. Bronstein and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-09-16 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For three years Miami cops tried unsuccessfully to solve a series of unrelated murders. As time passed and the body count began to rise, an interagency team of detectives began to ponder the possibility that a serial killer was loose in their county of two and a half million citizens. In 2009, the arrest of Mr. Michael Jerome brought the killing spree to an end. For the police and residents of the county, the case was concluded with a conviction on nine counts of premeditated murder. The perpetrator was sentenced to life in prison without parole. This was not, however, to be the end of the Michael Jerome story. While conducting a routine visit to the Miami-Dade County Jail on an unrelated case, private detective Fairlington Lavender meets Jerome, who is housed in an isolation cell. Interested in this unique case, Lavender is afforded the opportunity to interview the infamous killer. On their last visit together, Jerome hands the detective a fifty three page diary which reveals every detail of his life prior to, during, and after his killing spree. Lavender shares the diary with his friend Dr. Sanford Lerner, a forensic psychiatrist. Over a period of three months, the cop and the doctor meet and piece together the unique mosaic of Michael Jerome in an effort to understand what drove this previously law abiding man to such mayhem. The Case of the Miami Vigilante will afford the reader access to the complete, unedited diary of Michael Jerome. The psychological autopsy Lavender and Lerner conduct as they attempt to reach consensus concerning the motivations, psychological dynamics, and ultimately the clinical diagnosis of this enigmatic man will captivate the interest of anyone who is an ardent follower of crime stories. Was Michael Jerome a serial killer or a righteous vigilante?

Book The Case of the Miami Blackmailer

Download or read book The Case of the Miami Blackmailer written by S. N. Bronstein and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private investigator Fairlington Lavender was considering the merit of downing another cup of coffee at his usual breakfast café when his cell phone rang. He decided against more caffeine, tossed the paper cup in the trash, and answered the call that displayed a "305" area code. This indicated the call was from Miami and therefore it had the potential to be from a prospective client. It was Friday, January 2nd, 2009 and Lavender was finding his holiday break from the Washington, D.C. agency he worked for to be tedious. He was looking for an excuse to leave the cold winter climate and return home to South Florida. The call was from Rochelle Talbot, the victim of a nefarious blackmail plot. When Lavender takes her case, it leads him on a four month journey from Washington to Miami Beach and New York in search of a killer. Lavender quickly resolves Talbot's blackmail case but he becomes entangled in a murder when Scott Diamante, Talbot's blackmailer, kills Shea Hurley. Hurley, a prostitute and the part-time girlfriend of Diamante is killed when Scott suspects that she helped Lavender solve the blackmail case. Driven by a sense of guilt over Hurley's murder, Fairlington Lavender once again sets out to seek justice for those who can no longer speak for themselves. Detective Lavender tangles with the DEA, a Miami Beach cop who resents him, and a crew of Miami drug dealers as he tracks down Scott Diamante and seeks to bring him to justice. As always, Lavender incurs the wrath of everyone he encounters as he employs deception, guile, cunning, and old school detective work in search of his suspect. The Case of the Miami Blackmailer moves more quickly than the jets that carry Lavender up and down the east coast right behind Scott Diamante.

Book The Case of the Miami Philanthropist

Download or read book The Case of the Miami Philanthropist written by S.N. Bronstein and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-03-08 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this novel, the first in The Fairlington Lavender Detective Series, S.N. Bronsteins main character is Fairlington Lavender, a retired cop who is working as a private investigator. Lavender is an enigma. He is often arrogant, sometimes foul mouthed, and always devious and unconventional as he meticulously works toward solving a case. Yet, when Lavender suspects that a politically connected, wealthy, entrepreneur, Mr. Kendall Somers murdered an eighteen year old girl, Lavenders insights into the dynamics of psychology, sociology, and social psychology become apparent. He advances into the lives of his antagonists like a philosopher-gumshoe. His friend Al; Sherry, his former supervisor at the police department; the reprobate Dean Powell; and Somers all become witness to Lavenders ability to intersect inductive reasoning, instinct, and old school detective work into the effort to solve a murder. Along with these traits, Lavender adds the additional ingredient of a total disregard for the procedural limitations that restrain his peers at the police department. The Case of the Miami Philanthropist is a great diversion for a rainy day that affords the reader a fast moving detective story, written in a unique style unlike most conventional thrillers. The book will be hard to put down. Its a page turner from the minute Lavender meets Al and Powell at the county jail, until the murderer is finally apprehended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For private detective Fairlington Lavender a missing persons case is routine, especially in the unrestrained, neon subculture of South Miami Beach. The Case of the Yellow Flower Tattoo was everything but routine. In 2009 Lavender is contacted by Betsy Rodney, a retired New England school teacher who, along with her retired twin brother Richard, lives in a well ordered, predictable, and sheltered world of their own creation that resembles a 1950s lifestyle. This strange and peaceful existence is shattered when Richard disappears without a trace. In his attempt to locate Richard Rodney, Lavender dives into the nefarious world of South Beach nightlife and finds himself face to face with the Russian Mafia. The connection between Richard and the underworld confounds Lavender until he discovers a Russian girl named Yana who proves to be the link between the mob and Richards disappearance. Lavender digs deep; deeper than he should, in order to locate Richard and his mysterious new friend. His investigation techniques utilize 21st century technology along with 1940s era deception, subterfuge, and muscle. The Case of the Yellow Flower Tattoo takes the reader on a trip to South Beach and reveals the shadowy side of this city. Its classic Fairlington Lavender at his best.

Book Gunfighters Highwaymen and Vigilantes

Download or read book Gunfighters Highwaymen and Vigilantes written by Roger D. McGrath and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface:On the frontier, says conventional wisdom, a structured society did not exist and social control was largely absent; law enforcement and the criminal justice system had limited, if any, influence; and danger--both from man and from the elements--was ever present. This view of the frontier is projected by motion pictures, television, popular literature, and most scholarly histories. But was the frontier really all that violent? What was the nature of the violence that did occur? Were frontier towns more violent that cities in the East? Has America inherited a violent way of life from the frontier? Was the frontier more violent than the United States is today? This book attempts to answer these questions and others about violence and lawlessness on the frontier and do so in a new way. Whereas most authors have drawn their conclusions about frontier violence from the exploits of a few notorious badmen and outlaws and from some of the more famous incidents and conflicts, I have chosen to focus on two towns that I think were typical of the frontier--the mining frontier specifically--and to investigate all forms of violence and lawlessness that occurred in and around those towns.

Book excerpt: Jay Lumbert is saving the world again. This time, it's with a group of retirees living in the Final Rest, a retirement community in Miami! When a young girl goes missing, and the police ignore the crime, it is up to Tony Trance and his band of misfits to take off their reading glasses, throw away their canes and get things done. Every Thursday, Jaime Crandall sings for the residents of the Final Rest retirement community. One day Jaime goes missing, and her best friend, Tania Bellows, is found dead on South Beach. Jaime was last seen at a surprise party hosted by the nephew of one of Miami's biggest drug lords. Jaime is an innocent singer on the cusp of national stardom, not a drug user or party girl. When the police refuse to explore Tania's murder, and then close the case on Jaime's kidnapping, the residents of the Final Rest rise to the cause. They form The Varicose Vigilantes, a group of senior citizens dedicated to finding Jaime, and then ridding the world of illegal drugs. In this edgy and hilarious tale, a group of aging retirees must break the crusty chains of age, and create a new paradigm for living. Only then can they find Jaime Crandall, stop a global white slavery ring, take down Miami's biggest drug dealers and foil a terrorist plot that will make 9/11 look like a rehearsal.

Book Cuba Confidential

Download or read book Cuba Confidential written by Ann Louise Bardach and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From America’s number one Cuba reporter, PEN award–winning investigative journalist Ann Louise Bardach, comes the big book on Cuba we’ve all been waiting for. An incisive and spirited portrait of the twentieth century’s wiliest political survivor and his fiefdom, Cuba Confidential is the gripping story of the shattered families and warring personalities that lie at the heart of the forty-three-year standoff between Miami and Havana. Famous to many Americans for her cover stories and media appearances, Ann Louise Bardach has been covering Cuba for a decade. She’s talked to the crooks, spooks and politicians who have made history, and to their hired assassins and confidants. Based on exclusive interviews with Fidel Castro, his sister Juanita, his former brother-in-law Rafael Díaz-Balart, the family of Elián González, the friends and family of the legendary American fugitive Robert Vesco, the intrepid terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, and the inner circles of Jeb Bush and the late exile leader Jorge Mas Canosa, Cuba Confidential exposes the hardball take-no-prisoners tactics of the Cuban exile leadership, and its manipulation and exploitation by ten American presidents. Bardach homes in on Fidel Castro and his cronies, taking us closer than we’ve ever been—and on the militant exiles who have devoted their lives, with CIA connivance, to trying to eliminate him. From Calle Ocho to Juan Miguel González’s kitchen table in Cárdenas, from Guantánamo Bay to Union City to Washington, D.C., Ann Louise Bardach serves up an unforgettable portrait of Cuba and its exiles.

Book Media Control

Download or read book Media Control written by Robert E. Gutsche, Jr. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Media Control: News as an Institution of Power and Social Control challenges traditional (and even some radical) perceptions of how the news works. While it's clear that journalists don't operate objectively – reporters don't just cover news, but they make it – Media Control goes a step further by arguing that the cultural institution of news approaches and presents everyday information from particular and dominant cultural positions that benefit the power elite. From analysing how the press operate as police agents by conducting surveillance and instituting social order through its coverage of crime and police action to bolstering private business and neoliberal principles by covering the news through notions of boosterism, Media Control presents the news through a cultural lens. Robert E. Gutsche, Jr. introduces or advances readers' applications of critical race theory and cultural studies scholarship to explore cultural meanings within news coverage of police action, the criminal justice system, and embedding into the news democratic values that are later used by the power elite to oppress and repress portions of the citizenry. Media Control helps the reader explicate how the power elite use the press and the veil of the Fourth Estate to further white ideologies and American Imperialism.
