Book The Case Against Spiritualism Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Case Against Spiritualism Classic Reprint written by Jane T. Stoddart and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case Against Spiritualism Rudyard Kipling, with his robust common sense, has warned intruders who seek to establish a traffic with discarnate beings that they are entering on a dangerous path. "Oh the road to En-dor is the oldest road And the craziest road of all. Straight it runs to the Witch's abode, As it did in the days of Saul. And nothing has changed of the sorrow in store For such as go down on the road to En-dor!" That old road has never been more crowded than it is to-day. The merchants who travel on it appear to ignorant onlookers laden with balm and spicery and myrrh. Owing to the propagandist activities of honoured men like Sir Oliver Lodge, Sir W. F. Barrett and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the cult of Spiritualism has received a new advertisement, and is proving itself, in certain quarters, a rival to Christianity. Book Supernatural Entertainments

Download or read book Supernatural Entertainments written by Simone Natale and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Supernatural Entertainments, Simone Natale vividly depicts spiritualism’s rise as a religious and cultural phenomenon and explores its strong connection to the growth of the media entertainment industry in the nineteenth century. He frames the spiritualist movement as part of a new commodity culture that changed how public entertainments were produced and consumed. Starting with the story of the Fox sisters, considered the first spiritualist mediums in history, Natale follows the trajectory of spiritualism in Great Britain and the United States from its foundation in 1848 to the beginning of the twentieth century. He demonstrates that spiritualist mediums and leaders adopted many of the promotional strategies and spectacular techniques that were being developed for the broader entertainment industry. Spiritualist mediums were indistinguishable from other professional performers, as they had managers and agents, advertised in the press, and used spectacularism to draw audiences. Addressing the overlap between spiritualism’s explosion and nineteenth-century show business, Natale provides an archaeology of how the supernatural became a powerful force in the media and popular culture of today.

This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of Rev. I. E. Dwinell's Sermon Against Spiritualism N o no more than the Rev. Gentleman could investigate as Spiritualists would have him, without becoming infidel to the very Spirit of his moral nature. To investigate for scientific purposes, it is true, is both right and-proper; but to associate the phenomena of spiritualism with religion, cannot be done without moral obliquity and danger. Indeed, it is this very religious element, that gives to Spiritualism its charm and popularity, without which, its attractions would sink to the common level of science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Menace of Spiritualism It looks as if the penalty of trying to force the hand of God, and of lifting the veil to communicate with the Great Beyond was total loss of that childlike and clinging faith which is the priceless inheritance of the sons of God - Unless you become as a little child. Up to date in rare cases only have I been able to persuade necromancers to shake ofi Spiritistic practices and to return once more to the Church of their childhood. They tell you that they have actually seen, and that it is more blessed to have seen than to believe. When their choice lies between Christianity and Necromancy they choose the latter. Book The Case Against Spirit Photographs Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Case Against Spirit Photographs Classic Reprint written by C. Vincent Patrick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case Against Spirit Photographs Supernormal Pictures has, for example, been formed recently, and it is by no means uncommon to meet people who owe much of their belief in Spiritualism to the results they have obtained through photographic mediums. This considerable public interest would alone suffice to make the subject important, but, apart from this, it is clear that if all or even a fraction - oi what is claimed be true the phenomenon must be of unique value from the point of view of strictly scientific research. Photographic phenomena differ from practically all others studied by psychical researchers in being, so to Speak, permanently Objective. If one could be sure that the results obtained were not due to trickery one would be in a far better position as regards the problems of their origin and so forth than one is in the case of other types of physical phenomena. One could collect Spirit photographs, compare them with one another, correlate their differences with the varying conditions of their production, and generally study them at leisure - a procedure which is not possible with table-levitations, materialisations, or direct voice phenomena 1 The photographic plate would, in fact, be the most powerful of all weapons of research if only we could eliminate all possibility of fraud. This is, as usual, the crux of the whole matter, and, as my collaborator and I hope to Show, it is not nearly so easy to do as might appear at first sight. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Follies and Frauds of Spiritualism Horace Greeley publicly testified to the genuine ness of the girls' performance. Commenting on a visit they paid to New York in August, 1850, he says in his paper, the New York Tribune, that during a stay of several weeks in New York they were subjected to every reasonable test; their rooms at the hotel had been repeatedly searched; they have been all unconsciously placed on a glass surface concealed under the carpet, in order to interrupt electric vibrations; they have been disrobed by a committee of ladies appointed without notice, and insisting that neither of them should leave the room until the investigation had been made, etc.; yet we believe no one to this moment pretends that he has detected either of them in producing or causing the rappings and he concludes Whatever may be the origin or the cause of the rappings, ' the ladies in whose presence they occur do not make them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritualists' Iniquities Unmasked, and the Hatch Divorce Case Nine years Of investigation and Observation have not left me wholly unacquainted with the facts, philosophy and practical work ings of Spiritualism and if I present this to an intelligent public, I trust that it may, at least, do me the justice to attribute it to a sense of duty, rather than any feelings of vindictiveness towards a class of people with whom I have been so long identified. SO earnestly have I been engaged hitherto. In establishing a belief in the pheno mena, that to a great extent I overlooked its moral, social and religious bearings. Fishback, Held in Osceola, Iowa, Commencing Nov. 18, and Closing Nov. 28, 1874 I am creditably informed that, while Mr. F ishback was here, writing his speeches, he complained greatly of the mental labor to which it subjected him, seem ing to forget that it was the result of his own nu provoked challenge to a debate, for which he said he was unprepared; and that while he was run ning from place to place, delivering his stereotyped lectures, I was adding, to the work of months, a diligent and almost incessant toil in preparation; that after the debate, while he was still lecturing, I continued to labor, writing out my speeches, and that I was working as hard as he was all the time he was here writing. The difference between us, as I now believe, was, that I was writing, intending to publish, while he was writing, intending not to publish, if he could avoid it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritualism: A Popular History From 1847 Books about Spiritualism have been so numerous of late that the reader with little leisure probably finds it more difficult than ever to form an opinion. The only new work that can be of real use is a short and clear historical sketch of the entire movement. Those who make history, the living actors, rarely see its significance. The events of to-day take on swollen and gigantic forms, while the events of yesterday and the day before shrink into almost indistinguishable shapes on the dim horizon. It spoils one's perspective and sense of values. It obscures the real meaning of things. Life is a river rather than a procession. To understand it you must ascend the upper reaches, trace its tributaries, and glance at the hills and dales which directed the waters into the river-bed. Most useful of all would it be to rise high above the earth and survey the entire course, from the hill-sides on which the first showers fall to the point where the waters merge into the sea. And this in spite of religion and churches and priestly teaching, and Chris tianity, so called. For alas! The real Christ like attributes are as rare as they are Utopian, and though man has been rescued from the brute level he IS very, very far from the higher attributes of the Godhead which should be life's crowning expression. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case Against Mormonism Anti-mormon Literature. - In almost any large public library one may discover several hundred books, large and small dealing with the general sub ject of Mormonism. A goodly percentage of such books are unfriendly criticisms of the system and its founder: almost none, even those written by scholars and men of attamment-such men usually try to be fair, and see both sides - even attempt to be favor able. The situation as regards the system known as Mormonism, its founder and people, is a curious one; and it is by no means doubtful that considerable injustice has been done all of them. Also, as a side issue, we may claim that the world has missed se quaintance with several highly significant facts, of interest in theology, sociology and economics, just be cause we have formed the evil habit of condemning the system under discussion and its adherents, without the formality of a fair trial.
