Book The Girls and Boys of Belchertown

Download or read book The Girls and Boys of Belchertown written by Robert N. Hornick and published by Univ of Massachusetts Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During much of the twentieth century, people labeled "feeble-minded," "mentally deficient," and "mentally retarded" were often confined in large, publicly funded, residential institutions located on the edges of small towns and villages some distance from major population centers. At the peak of their development in the late 1960s, these institutions--frequently called "schools" or "homes" --housed 190,000 men, women, and children in the United States. The Girls and Boys of Belchertown offers the first detailed history of an American public institution for intellectually disabled persons. Robert Hornick recounts the story of the Belchertown State School in Belchertown, Massachusetts, from its beginnings in the 1920s to its closure in the 1990s following a scandalous exposé and unprecedented court case that put the institution under direct supervision of a federal judge. He draws on personal interviews, private letters, and other unpublished sources as well as local newspapers, long out-of-print materials, and government reports to re-create what it was like to live and work at the school. More broadly, he gauges the impact of changing social attitudes toward intellectual disability and examines the relationship that developed over time between the school and the town where it was located. What emerges is a candid and complex portrait of the Belchertown State School that neither vilifies those in charge nor excuses the injustices perpetrated on its residents, but makes clear that despite the court-ordered reforms of its final decades, the institution needed to be closed.

Download or read book Nunley s Amusement Park written by Marisa L. Berman and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nunley s Amusement Park in Baldwin, New York, was a beloved family destination for Long Islanders from 1939 until it closed in 1995. The park s most notable attraction was its famed Stein & Goldstein carousel. The Nunley family established numerous amusement parks in the Long Island area, such as those found in Bethpage, Rockaway Beach, and Broad Channel. Nunley s Amusement Park, which was in operation for over 50 years, has a special place in the memories of multiple generations of Long Islanders. After the park closed, the rides and games were sold at auction. In protest, Long Islanders banded together to prevent the carousel from being disassembled and sold off separately. Recognizing the passion residents held for the park, Nassau County stepped in and purchased the beloved carousel, and an elaborate campaign was established for its restoration. The year 2012 marked the 100th anniversary of the famous Nunley s Carousel, which is currently in operation at Museum Row in Garden City, New York."

Book Lost Amusement Parks of New York City

Download or read book Lost Amusement Parks of New York City written by Barbara Gottlock and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-20 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical tour of fun and frolic in the five boroughs—including photos from the good old days. Coney Island is an iconic symbol of turn-of-the-century New York—but many other amusement parks have thrilled the residents of the five boroughs. Strategically placed at the end of trolley lines, railways, public beaches, and waterways, these playgrounds for the rich and poor alike first appeared in 1767. From humble beginnings, they developed into huge sites like Fort George, Manhattan’s massive amusement complex. Each park was influenced by the culture and eclectic tastes of its owners and patrons—from the wooden coasters at Staten Island’s Midland Beach to beer gardens on Queens’ North Beach and fireworks blasting from the Bronx’s Starlight Park. As real estate became more valuable, these parks disappeared. With this historical tour, you can rediscover the thrills of the past from the lost amusement parks of New York City.

Book excerpt: The second volume of mini-travelogues by poet and writer Thomas Porky McDonald, On the Tour: More City Walks, picks up where A Walk in the City: An Incomplete Tour left off. This time, in addition to some previously unmentioned museums, a number of parks, historic houses, theaters and New York landmarks join in the mix. From Washington Square Park to the Old Town Bar & Restaurant to the Louis Armstrong House to the Queens, Bronx and Prospect Park Zoos, The City is well represented in McDonalds brief vignettes. Once again, a Walking Distance addendum is featured, in order to give the traveler an idea of the most possible sites one can see in a given day. Another useful and understated guide to the writers lifetime home.
