Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting into medical school is difficult, even for students with excellent college undergraduate records. Today, only about one-third of all students who apply to medical college are accepted—a statistic that emphasizes the vital importance of well-focused preparation on the part of medical school candidates. Getting into Medical School, now in its new twelfth edition, has gained a well-earned reputation as a time-proven source of sound advice and information on how medical school candidates can improve their chances for admission. Written by a medical doctor who is also an experienced student advisor, and updated to reflect today’s medical school environment, this book emphasizes the importance of attaining a good score on the standardized MCAT (Medical College Admission Test). It also guides applicants through the arduous process of preparing the medical school application and advises them on how to make a good impression when invited for that all-important personal interview. The book concludes with a detailed medical school directory that lists up-to-date tuitions and fees, academic requirements, and application and enrollment information for more than 170 accredited medical and osteopathic colleges across the United States. Also included is a list of Web sites that provide helpful information to medical school candidates.

Each year hundreds of students enroll in the various Caribbean medical schools to receive an excellent education en-route to obtaining their Doctor of Medicine (MD). Although the final goal is the same, achieving this outcome can be difficult if the school you choose is not the right fit for you. Until now there has never been a resource available to assist and guide prospective Caribbean medical students through this arduous process. Many crucial questions on topics such as tuition, curriculum, licensing exams, and United States credentialing differ from school to school. Answers to these vital questions may be difficult to find, especially in an objective fashion. Prior to The Caribbean Medical School Reference , students have been burdened with the responsibility of researching these issues on their own at considerable time and expense and with significant consequence should a mistake be made. Given the sacrifice that you have made thus far, it is imperative that you can efficiently and objectively choose the correct Caribbean medical school.

Download or read book Playing with Languages written by Amy L. Paugh and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over several generations villagers of Dominica have been shifting from Patwa, an Afro-French creole, to English, the official language. Despite government efforts at Patwa revitalization and cultural heritage tourism, rural caregivers and teachers prohibit children from speaking Patwa in their presence. Drawing on detailed ethnographic fieldwork and analysis of video-recorded social interaction in naturalistic home, school, village and urban settings, the study explores this paradox and examines the role of children and their social worlds. It offers much-needed insights into the study of language socialization, language shift and Caribbean children’s agency and social lives, contributing to the burgeoning interdisciplinary study of children’s cultures. Further, it demonstrates the critical role played by children in the transmission and transformation of linguistic practices, which ultimately may determine the fate of a language.

Comprised of thirty chapters, each chapter is broken down into smaller sub-sections to investigate the main theme in depth. Issues addressed include the different types of international medical graduates and their lives in the United States, differences in the education system and healthcare system, the triangle of residency, language and cultural barriers, lack of professional contacts, confidence, self-image and self-esteem issues, and restriction to specific fields and career paths.
