Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battle field and pa triot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union when again touched as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature. Ever since, men have asked the questions: Who taught him? Where did he gain the power to say so simply the words that have stayed in the memories and hearts of men through all these years? There was nothing extraordinary about it. This simple minded country lawyer had sprung from good Southern stock. The Lincolns had been pioneers in New England, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Kentucky, and they included in their connection men of mark and men of character.
