Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Care of Records in a National Emergency, 1941 Before the outset of the present war, most European nations had made preparations for the removal and storage of their most valuable records. In the spring of 1939 many records of the French Foreign Office had been removed from Paris to a safer location and plans were under way for the evacuation of many of the documents in the British Public Record O ee. In Budapest, areas within the Hungarian Royal State Archives building set aside for the preservation of val uahle medieval documents were protected by sandbags banked in the passages and against the windows. The sandbags were put in place during the crisis of September 1938 and were still in place in March 1939. It is noteworthy that in these cases precautions were taken in advance of actual military danger. Lack of advance planning, on the other hand, has sometimes been responsible for the unnecessary destruction of valuable records in Europe. Collections have been weeded out indiscriminately or sent intact to the paper mill. Others have been sent to unsafe or poorly improvised storage places. Book The Record 1941 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Record 1941 Classic Reprint written by Haverford College and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Record, 1941 Billy's administration. It has seen the flurry of excitement accom panying the establishment of a new administration. It has seen the inevitable difficulties arising out of the attempt to adjust the old with the new. To make compatible an atmosphere of Arcadian quietness and an atmosphere of problems of international coopera tion and local garbage disposal. It has seen the start of the war and the introduction of compulsory military training. Lt has been rudely shaken out of its lethargic attitude toward events oil the campus. The Class has wondered if the death of Professor Thomas R. Kelly is not symbolic of a decline of the religious influence which had been so large a part of the old atmosphere of quietness. The Class of 1941 is not demoralized, but it is uncertain. The 1941 record does not attempt to adopt any such theme as uncertainty. Rather it presents. We think. A genial interpretation of undergraduate life at Haverford. The reader may get the follow ing impressions: (1) Every Haverford student plays cards and shoots craps. (2) A Bryn Mawr blackout is more than alliteration. And this is a side of college lite that we have emphasized - and a side that will not be the First forgotten. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes over 75 maps, photos and plans. The present volume describes the activities of the U.S. Army in Vietnam during World War II, military advice and assistance to the French government during the immediate post-war years, and the advisory program that developed after the Geneva Agreements of 1954. Its scope ranges from high-level policy decisions to low-echelon advisory operations in the field, presented against a background of relevant military and political developments. The author enjoyed access to the official records of the period and examined personal papers, interviews, other documentary sources, and miscellaneous published materials. Useful not only as a study of military assistance but as a view of the Army as an agent of national policy, this volume is a fitting introduction to the overall study of the conflict in Vietnam.

Book excerpt: Classical music in 1940s America had a cultural relevance and ubiquitousness that is hard to imagine today. No other war mobilized and instrumentalized culture in general and music in particular so totally, so consciously, and so unequivocally as World War II. Through author Annegret Fauser's in-depth, engaging, and encompassing discussion in context of this unique period in American history, Sounds of War brings to life the people and institutions that created, performed, and listened to this music.
