Those who have rightly come to the conclusion that the care and regulation of children's teeth is an important and serious subject will appreciate fully the value of the advice given ; whilst others, who from carelessness, want of thought, neglect, or fear of putting their children to pain and inconvenience, will, it is hoped, consider seriously the necessity for the more careful supervision of and attention to the teeth of those for whose appearance, health, and strength (bodily and mentally) they are responsible. The author's experience has proved to him that it is absolutely necessary to the well-being, and in the interest, of future generations to induce the public to realise the importance of having regular and useful teeth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How Children May Have Sound Teeth As the baby's first tooth is eagerly watched for and its arrival heralded with great joy throughout the household, little thought is paid to the forces which have united in show ing it to us. The teeth, like all other organs of the body, must have their particular nour ishment in order to sustain their individuality and develop themselves. When a mother in telligently gives special attention to the care of her child's teeth, she not only helps them, but strengthens all the other organs of the body, particularly the bony structure. We might, for convenience, divide the time in which our attention should be given to the teeth into two periods: the first that before. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Teeth: How to Take Care of Them Physiology has become one Of the fundamental studies in the ele mentary schools. In connection with it is given instruction in the simple laws Of hygiene. Special attention is devoted to the evil effects of alcoholic beverages and narcotics. All this is commendable and encouraging to the friends Of educational progress. The well being of the body cannot be too highly regarded in the making up Of school programs. One logical result Of the more intelligent interest Of'the people in matters concerning the health of children is the introduction of ex pert medical inspection Of the schools. Thus far this inspection has confined itself largely to the sanitary conditions Of school buildings and the general health Of pupils. If there has been any specialization it has been examination into the condition Of children's eyes and ears, and perhaps also Of the nose and throat. One important factor seems to have been largely disregarded, and that is the need of a periodical dental inspection. The principal reason for the oversight is probably to be found in the lack of interest On the part Of the average physician in the health Of teeth. This field has long been left entirely to the dentist, and the latter has not, at least in the United States, been made a member of the boards of medical ex aminers for schools. Book Operative Dentistry for Children

Download or read book Operative Dentistry for Children written by Minnie Evangeline Jordon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Operative Dentistry for Children: A d104 Book Dealing With the Prophylactic and Curative Treatment of the Teeth of the Child, Based Upon Experiences Gained During More Than Twenty-Five Years Devoted to the Care of Children Exclusively If we are going to live up to the slogan, Add ten years to life, why not begin at the logical time, to store up good health and resistance to disease by the conservation of sound teeth and healthy soft tissues in the oral cavity? Why not be prepared to do thorough constructive work from the earliest period at which the parent can be induced to bring a child instead of saying, when consulted, as thousands of dentists are still advising, There is no need of work on the first teeth. There is the greatest need of work on these first teeth, as is proved by the fact that eigthy per cent Of school children suffer from dental caries. This refusal of many dentists to care for the youngest children - and the resulting foci Of infection in the mouths of children - has brought the dental profession into disrepute. Dental caries is a preventable disease of childhood, due to incorrect diet and lack Of care. That it is not wholly due to disease is shown by children who, though ill from birth, through continuous care have perfect teeth. That it is not due to heredity is shown by children with perfect teeth where the parents have very bad teeth. Carious teeth sometimes seem to be inherited, but upon investigation will be found to be the result of imitating the bad habits Of the parents. Dental caries could be eradicated in a generation as certainly as have been yellow fever and the plagues. Instead of destroying the deadly mosquito and flea, it would only be necessary to rid the country Of the more deadly candy shop and grocery store, get most of our living from the vegetable garden and the family cow, and apply the teachings of oral hygiene. The examinations made during the war disclosed the dire results of neglected teeth in childhood. These examinations were made Of the young men of the nation; but no doubt an equal or even larger number Of girls and young women are as far below normal. This indicates that the future health and morals of the nation are in great danger. It also throws an immense responsibility upon the dental profession. In no other way could more loyal service be rendered to our country than by building up a vigorous race through eradicating dental caries in childhood. Book What Can a Mother Do to Preserve Her Children s Teeth Classic Reprint

Download or read book What Can a Mother Do to Preserve Her Children s Teeth Classic Reprint written by Henry C. Quinby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What Can a Mother Do to Preserve Her Children's Teeth? And there are so many erroneous ideas, with so little real knowledge of what a mother can and should do for her children's teeth, that it has seemed to me a want would be supplied if some trustworthy informa tion were put together in a popular form to explain a few of the causes of tooth deterioration, and the means by which the evil can be arrested. My experience as a dental practitioner teaches me that if parents do not take the trouble to look after their children's teeth intelligently and carefully, the dentist may as well cease his endeavours to preserve these organs, and go back to his old position of tooth-drawer, which is still the only idea conveyed to many minds by the word dentist. There cannot be much doubt about the truth of the common assertion, that the teeth of the present generation are much more troublesome than those of the generations immediately preceding us, but I do not believe that the change from good to bad has been wholly, or very largely, the work of recent years. The fact has been forced upon our notice in late years, partly because the suffering begins earlier in life with the young children, and partly, no doubt, by the advance in dental science, which has made possible the successful treatment of teeth that our fathers would have had no hope of saving, and would, therefore, have got rid of with but little ceremony or remark. The deterioration has been going on long enough before our time, but its extent is beginning to be realized because it has reached a point where the most superficial observer cannot fail to see it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dentist: A Popular Treatise on the Care of the Teeth When we consider the vastly greater value of health, is it not strangely inconsistent that it is not made as much a subject of study as mathematics or music? What an immensely greater proportion of time, thought, care, is given to dress, than to health. Such folly is only equalled by charging the Lord with our ailments, which charge is an insult to. Common-sense, and a reproach to our Maker. When we say that sometimes circumstances for the time being are beyond our control; and that there may be a special interposition of Providence in any given case; we have said all we are war ranted in saying, and perhaps more than we know of either proposition. Let it be clearly understood, then, that we start Out with the conviction that the evils to which the teeth are subject are as much within our control as any other human affairs. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Angle System of Regulation and Retention of the Teeth, and Treatment of Fractures of the Maxillae: With One Hundred and Fifteen Illustrations; Fifth Edition Revised At the earnest solicitation of numerous students and teachers it had been the author's intention in preparing the fifth edition to rewrite and rearrange the subject-matter more in keeping with the exacting requirements of a complete, modern text-book on Orthodontia. But, owing to the fact that the fourth edition has had such a wide circulation, having been published in part in periodicals, compendiums, and text-books both dental and surgical, and complete translations in the French, German, Dutch, Scandinavian, and Spanish languages, it has been thought advisable, in order to prevent the confusion which would result from the rearranging of pages and numbering of cuts, to incorporate the new subject-matter in the form of a Supplement into the corrected and but slightly modified fifth edition. As the fruits of a busy practice, - the author has devoted his time exclusively to the practice and teaching of Orthodontia, - the Supplement will be found to contain numerous additions and modifications of combinations, also new combinations, together with suggestions and comparisons, and a more comprehensive plan of nomenclature and classification of irregularities from the basis of occlusion; all of which the author believes will still further simplify, for both student and teacher, the study and practice of this most useful branch of dental science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teeth Regulation: With Finely Made Original Devices Ready for Immediate Operative Application Without Soldering; Numerous Specific Illustrations If operators were now compelled to make from blanks bought at dental depots burs, excavators, pluggers, clamps, etc., and had to make a new one or lot for every operation they were called upon to perform, the filling of teeth would be a much more tedious and expensive operation than it now is, yet this is what has hitherto been done in nearly every case of dental irregularity dentists have been called upon to cor rect. After a long series of experiments in practical work the author has succeeded in performing with the regulating de vices described in the following pages, all the' operations usually met with in practice, and he claims for these devices the following advantages: First: They are ready to take out of the box and apply to the teeth. No heating or soldering is required. They are therefore as neat in appearance in the mouth as when removed from the box. Second: The several members are as small as is consistent with strength, they are well plated to resist tarnishment, are accessible in all situations, and are not liable to displacement or loss by the patient. Third: All the parts are interchangeable, and when an extra member is ordered for a special case, it will work with all the parts on hand as well as those afterward obtained. The miseries arising from this source are shared by so many that a good set of natural teeth has become the exception rather than the rule. The teeth are either decaying and painful, or filled - worse still, supplied with artificial substitutes. All this is an affliction, and Wholly in disaccord with the econ omy of life and the laws of our physical existence, as well as our physical comfort. Is it not wonderful that causes so prolific of pain, discomfort and even sickness, of sleeplessness by night and anguish by day, the dread of all ages, sexes and conditions, should so little attract the attention of writers, who, upon other subjects of interest or profit, labor so earnestly and so Well to promote the happiness of our race?
