Book excerpt: The Cardinal Sins ignited a worldwide sensation when it first appeared nearly thirty years ago. Selling more than three million copies, it launched Andrew M. Greeley's career as one of America's most popular storytellers. Back in print at last, this powerful saga of ambition, temptation, and love both spiritual and carnal is as timely and provocative as ever. Lifelong friends and occasional rivals, Kevin Brennan and Patrick Donahue enter seminary together, but their lives soon diverge dramatically. Intellectual and independent, Kevin achieves success as a scholar but often finds himself at odds with his superiors in the Church. And his unwavering principles threaten to cut him off from those closest to him—including the former sweetheart he has never forgotten. By contrast, the ambitious Patrick rises steadily through the Church hierarchy, only to fall prey to the temptations of lust and power. As hidden scandals and Patrick's inner demons threaten to destroy the lives of everyone around him, it's up to his oldest friend to save him from himself—and foil a conspiracy that could change the very future of the Papacy! Book The Sin I Knew Not What You Think

Download or read book The Sin I Knew Not What You Think written by Father Erno Diaz and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sin I Knew (not what you think) is a humble spin-off from several books of the same genre already in the shelves of bookstores and libraries. Sin Stories, The Colorful Life of Cardinal Sin, and Cardinal Sin of Manila are among them. I venture to say that more books will be written by people who worked with Cardinal Sin, by those who listened to his homilies and talks, and by the adoring public including the future biographers of this extraordinary man of God. I sometimes think that my little book will be but a footnote to the lore of books, articles, and other literature on Cardinal Sin, present and future. Nevertheless, as a life long protege of the Cardinal, I want to share what I knew about himmy personal insights and the memorable incidents and situations that may in the distant future be significant historical readings for historians like his secret meeting with President Reagan in 1984 in New York that I kind of helped broker.

Book excerpt: Look out for a new book from Garry Wills, What The Qur'an Meant, coming fall 2017. "The truth, we are told, will make us free. It is time to free Catholics, lay as well as clerical, from the structures of deceit that are our subtle modern form of papal sin. Paler, subtler, less dramatic than the sins castigated by Orcagna or Dante, these are the quiet sins of intellectual betrayal." --from the Introduction From Pulitzer Prize-winning author Garry Wills comes an assured, acutely insightful--and occasionally stinging--critique of the Catholic Church and its hierarchy from the nineteenth century to the present. Papal Sin in the past was blatant, as Catholics themselves realized when they painted popes roasting in hell on their own church walls. Surely, the great abuses of the past--the nepotism, murders, and wars of conquest--no longer prevail; yet, the sin of the modern papacy, as revealed by Garry Wills in his penetrating new book, is every bit as real, though less obvious than the old sins. Wills describes a papacy that seems steadfastly unwilling to face the truth about itself, its past, and its relations with others. The refusal of the authorities of the Church to be honest about its teachings has needlessly exacerbated original mistakes. Even when the Vatican has tried to tell the truth--e.g., about Catholics and the Holocaust--it has ended up resorting to historical distortions and evasions. The same is true when the papacy has attempted to deal with its record of discrimination against women, or with its unbelievable assertion that "natural law" dictates its sexual code. Though the blithe disregard of some Catholics for papal directives has occasionally been attributed to mere hedonism or willfulness, it actually reflects a failure, after long trying on their part, to find a credible level of honesty in the official positions adopted by modern popes. On many issues outside the realm of revealed doctrine, the papacy has made itself unbelievable even to the well-disposed laity. The resulting distrust is in fact a neglected reason for the shortage of priests. Entirely aside from the public uproar over celibacy, potential clergy have proven unwilling to put themselves in a position that supports dishonest teachings. Wills traces the rise of the papacy's stubborn resistance to the truth, beginning with the challenges posed in the nineteenth century by science, democracy, scriptural scholarship, and rigorous history. The legacy of that resistance, despite the brief flare of John XXIII's papacy and some good initiatives in the 1960s by the Second Vatican Council (later baffled), is still strong in the Vatican. Finally Wills reminds the reader of the positive potential of the Church by turning to some great truth tellers of the Catholic tradition--St. Augustine, John Henry Newman, John Acton, and John XXIII. In them, Wills shows that the righteous path can still be taken, if only the Vatican will muster the courage to speak even embarrassing truths in the name of Truth itself.

Book excerpt: Open Case File Memo Honor my father. There are four types of serial killers. Hedonistic. Power/control. Mission-oriented. Visionary. Not all serial killers are caught. At any given point, there could be as many as fifty serial killers active at a time. Fifty. I'm looking for one. He's male, likely in his forties or fifties now. He's been killing successfully for more than three decades. I suspect even longer, though our timeline is based only on the earliest victim we've identified with his signature mark. Seventy-nine kills that we are certain of. A year ago, the unsub's methods changed. It was a subtle shift. Instead of one or two bodies a year, five have been dropped. Forensic evidence remains inconclusive, but in my gut, I know something's changed. Either the unsub has a partner or he's about to become a spree killer. It's only a matter of time before someone puts the coin into the right slot and the kill song begins. Finding the unsub is my obsession. It was my father's. He died without solving the mystery. I won't. KILL SONG is a full length dark adult romance and psychological thriller with suspenseful themes. Any trigger warnings will be included in the foreword. Some situations may be uncomfortable for readers. This is a reverse harem novel, meaning the main character has more than one love interest. This is book one in the series.
