Book excerpt: Two Captains is the most renowned novel of the Russian writer Veniamin Kaverin. The plot spans from 1912 to 1944. For more than half a century the book has been loved by children and adults alike. The novel has undergone more than 100 printings, including translations into other languages. Based on its story, plays have been staged and an opera has been written. The plot of the book also became the basis of two movies of the same title in 1955 and 1976. In 1995 in Pskov, the home town of the author, a monument was erected to the characters of the book and a "Two Captains" museum was opened. The real prototype for Captain Tatarinov was Lieutenant Georgii Brusilov, who in 1912 organized a privately funded expedition seeking a west-to-east Northern sea route. The steamship "St. Anna," specially built for the expedition, left Petersburg on 28 July 1912. Near the shores of Yamal peninsula it was seized by ice and carried in the ice drift to the north of the Kara Sea. The expedition survived two hard winters. Of the 14 people who left the stranded steamship in 1914, only two made it to one of the islands of Frants-Joseph Land and were spotted and taken aboard "St. Foka", the ship of the expedition of G. Y. Sedov. The ship log they had kept with them contained the most important of the scientific data, after the study of which Sedov's expedition found the previously unknown island in the Kara Sea, Vize Island. The ultimate fate of "St.Anna" and its remaining crew is still unknown. Veniamin Kaverin (1902-1989) wrote novels, short stories, fairy tales, memoirs, and biographies. In the early 1920s, Veniamin Kaverin was a member of experimental literary group "Serapionovi bratya". In 1946 his novel Two Captains became the winner of the USSR State Literature Award.

Book excerpt: The twelve notebooks in volume 1 provided information about the eighteen years in which the most profound, even dramatic, changes took place in Clemens' life. He early achieved the limits of his boyhood ambition by becoming a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River, a position there is no reason to believe he would have abandoned if the Civil War had not forced him to do so. In fleeing from a war which principle and temperament prevented him from supporting, Clemens entered into the first stages of his literary career by serving as a reporter for newspapers in Virginia City and San Francisco. When the restricted experiences available to a local reporter had been thoroughly explored, he moved on as a traveling correspondent to the Sandwich Islands and then still farther to Europe and the Near East. The latter travels provided him with material for The Innocents Abroad, the book that established Mark Twain as a popular author with an international reputation in 1869. In 1872 he further exploited his personal history by publishing Roughing It and in the same year visited England to gather material on English people and institutions. He returned to England the following year, this time accompanied by his family and by a secretary who would record the observations printed as the last notebook in volume 1. Volume 2 of Mark Twain's Notebooks and Journals, documenting Clemens' activities in the years from 1877 to 1883, consists largely of the record of three trips which would serve as the source for three travel narratives: the excursion to Bermuda, a prolonged tour of Europe, and an evocative return to the Mississippi River. Despite the common impulse to preserve observations and impressions for literary use, the contents of the notebooks are remarkably different in their vitality-and the works which developed from the notes are correspondingly varied.

Two of the three most important were never completed, obstacles having arisen during his life-time, which obliged him to leave them unfinished; namely the Sforza Monument and the Wall-painting of the Battle of Anghiari, while the third—the picture of the Last Supper at Milan—has suffered irremediable injury from decay and the repeated restorations to which it was recklessly subjected during the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries. Nevertheless, no other picture of the Renaissance has become so wellknown and popular through copies of every description. Vasari says, and rightly, in his Life of Leonardo, "that he laboured much more by his word than in fact or by deed", and the biographer evidently had in his mind the numerous works in Manuscript which have been preserved to this day. He was a Midshipman at the Academy for four years, graduates and becomes a Commisioned officer. He serves at sea in two battleships: a U.S. Navy Oil Tanker and a Heavy Cruiser, by now as a Commander. Right after serving on the Navy Oil Tanker, he marries Phyllis Larkin. He's at sea again in a Heavy Cruiser, which is damaged in a kamikaze attack. The Cruiser is sent home for repairs and the War ends. For the next few years, Jerry's assignements include the Pentagon and the Philadelphia Shipyard, where is is promoted to Captain. He is sent to Pearl Harbor and while he's there, his wife is killed in an automoble accident, leaving him to raise two children alone. There, the family becomes fluent in Spanish and Jerry is involvedin Intelligence work. On a trip to Washinton, D.C., Jerry, by chance, meets Captain Mary Ann Graybill again after a number of years. He is single now and she has never married. Their romance begins. On a visit to Spain, she is persuaded to marry Jerry and theirs is a transatlantic marriage. At the age of 47, Mary Ann must learn to be a stepmother and wife, but they become a happy family. Jerry is transferred to Washington, D.C. to work in Intelligence. He and the children teach Mary Ann to speak Spanish and she becomes fluent also. Jerry is promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral. His rank, together with their language skills cause Jerry and Mary Ann to be assigned to the Presidential party when the President of the U.S. pays a State Visit to Argentina. That was a trip of a lifetime for the Rogersons, to travel on Air Force One and to be lavishly entertained as members of the Presidential party. They decide they should both retired and begin traveling in a motor home throughout the U.S. and Canada.
