Book And Then They All Puked

Download or read book And Then They All Puked written by Jeff Nichols and published by HumorOutcasts Press. This book was released on 2021-06-05 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stricken with a lifelong obsession for offshore fishing, Jeff Nichols had been running part-time charters out of Montauk Harbor, once dubbed "the sport fishing capital of the world," for ten years with mediocre results. Most of the time, he just brought friends out and considered a trip successful if the customers didn't stiff him, walk off with his rods and reels, or puke all over him. He bought cheap, remarkably unsafe boats, and so as to not piss off the other charter boat captains, named his operation Second Choice Charters. Then he started a Groupon campaign to boost his modest, if not pathetic, business. The Groupon campaign worked amazingly well, and Jeff quickly became one of the busiest captains in Montauk, sailing twice a day all week long. But unbeknownst to his customers, he was ill-prepared and grossly underqualified for the job despite being a USCG-licensed captain, not to mention that his boats were filthy and not exactly seaworthy. The results were horrific. In the notoriously dangerous waters off Montauk Point, Jeff's escapades resulted in seven Mayday calls and six documented Coast Guard rescues at sea (one including a helicopter). Even though his adventures are sometimes comical, he quickly realizes they are also cautionary tales. Not everyone should be a captain, and the "6 pack captain's license" in the wrong hands can be a license to kill. Jeff Nichols's first book, Trainwreck: My Life as an Idoit, was made into a movie by Lions Gate Films under the title, American Loser, and his second book, Caught, is an eye-opening account of the black market striped bass industry. Jeff has written over the years for Penthouse, the New York Post, Easthampton Star, and Dans Papers. He now runs the Montauk marine septic boat and monitors Channel 73.

Book Captains Log Book

  • Author : Bo Harris
  • Publisher :

  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book Captains Log Book written by Bo Harris and published by . This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you know that a USCG license is required in order to legally carry passengers for hire? This includes charters for: * Fishing * Sightseeing * Diving * Transportation * Teaching * Eco-Tours etc... i.e. any use which is considered a "passenger for hire" situation. Many maritime companies now require them for boat deliveries and marine transportation. These are all good reasons to maintain your own seafarers maritime log book. How much documented "service on the water time" must you have to qualify for the different types of USCG licenses? 360 days for OUPV and 720 days for Master class, both of which require at least 90 days within the last 3 years. This log book will help you document your sea time in an organized and compact form. USCG Captains'' License Information OUPV INLAND (6 PAK) Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel * A minimum of 360 days on the water experience from age 16 years to present is required. * 90 of those 360 days must be within the most recent 3 years on a power or sail vessel over 16 feet in length. OUPV NEAR COASTAL (6 PAK) Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel * These requirements are the same as those for the Master Inland/OUPV Near Coastal Endorsement License. * A minimum of 360 days on the water experience from age 16 years to present is required. * 90 of those 360 days must be within the most recent 3 years on a power or sail vessel over 16 feet in length. * 90 of those 360 days must be on waters outside the boundary lines established by the US Coast Guard. MASTER INLAND (25, 50 OR 100 GROSS TONS) * A minimum of 360 days on the water experience from age 16 years to present is required. * 90 of those 360 days must be within the most recent 3 years on a power or sail vessel over 16 feet in length. MASTER INLAND (25, 50 OR 100 GROSS TON) / OUPV ENDORSEMENT * These requirements are the same as those of the OUPV Near Coastal License. MASTER INLAND (25, 50 OR 100 GROSS TON) / MATE NEAR COASTAL ENDORSEMENT * A minimum of 360 days on the water experience from age 16 years to present is required. * 90 of those 360 days must be within the most recent 3 years on a power or sail vessel over 16 feet in length. * 180 of those 360 days must be on waters outside the boundary lines established by the US Coast Guard. MASTER NEAR COASTAL (25, 50 OR 100 TON) * A minimum of 720 days on the water experience from age 16 to present is required. * 90 of those 720 days must be within the most recent 3 years on a similar size vessel to the license you are applying for. * 360 days of those 720 days must be on waters outside the boundary lines established by the US Coast Guard. * You will also need a TWIC Card How do I prove my time on the water to meet the US Coast Guard requirements? Most recreational boaters do not maintain log books. As such, the Sea Service forms which are included in the USCG application package must be filled out by hand. This form consists of twelve boxes, one for each month of the year. Starting with the most recent year, you fill in the number of days you can best recall being on the water and then go backward in time to the age of 16 years old, or until the sea time requirements have been met. This time is then supported by proof of ownership of the vessel, if you are claiming time on your own boat. If you claim time on someone else''s boat, then they must sign your sea service form. These are all good reasons to maintain your own log book. With this log book you can show your documented time.

Book The Captains of Thor

Download or read book The Captains of Thor written by Robert Frump and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was it the captain's fault, as many said? Or did the company, the Coast Guard and the American Bureau of Shipping all have a hand on the helm of the SS El Faro as she steered too close to Hurricane Joaquin? This is an examination of a tragedy that has been well-researched and investigated -- heroically so at times -- by the United States Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board. Three very well-done books have been published. All of these efforts produced detailed recommendations and observations and all are publicly available. I commend them to you. My effort touches on the broad sweep and events of the tragedy and investigation, but if you want the detailed story of the final voyage of the ship, you're better off with the other books. My main goal here is to show how the SS El Faro fit into a larger system and culture -- one that I have been covering off and on as a journalist and author for 38 years. It's this system, I feel, that will result in another SS El Faro someday unless it is reformed. Another note on style. My preference in non-fiction is "narrative." In other words, whenever I can, I tell a story and show what is happening; I prefer that to "telling" the reader, because I think "showing" is more readily absorbed. Humans learn through stories. Story telling rather than a lecture better illustrates the emotions at play here, as well as the moods, culture and vibe of the ship and the industry. This does not mean I take a pure poetic license. The dialogue quoted here is real, not made up. The material is factual.

Book The Boys in the Boat Movie Tie In

Download or read book The Boys in the Boat Movie Tie In written by Daniel James Brown and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration for the Major Motion Picture Directed by George Clooney—exclusively in theaters December 25, 2023! The #1 New York Times bestselling true story about the American rowing triumph of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin—from the author of Facing the Mountain For readers of Unbroken, out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times—the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant. It was an unlikely quest from the start. With a team composed of the sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, the University of Washington’s eight-oar crew team was never expected to defeat the elite teams of the East Coast and Great Britain, yet they did, going on to shock the world by defeating the German team rowing for Adolf Hitler. The emotional heart of the tale lies with Joe Rantz, a teenager without family or prospects, who rows not only to regain his shattered self-regard but also to find a real place for himself in the world. Drawing on the boys’ own journals and vivid memories of a once-in-a-lifetime shared dream, Brown has created an unforgettable portrait of an era, a celebration of a remarkable achievement, and a chronicle of one extraordinary young man’s personal quest.
