Book Daughters of the American Revolution Collection

Download or read book Daughters of the American Revolution Collection written by Luce family and published by . This book was released on 1756 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Series I Martha's Vineyard Chapter and Sea Coast Defence Chapter papers is comprised of an artificial collection of D.A.R. materials assembled by previous processors or a former volunteer, intern or staff member of the Martha's Vineyard Museum, dating from 1896-1940. The series consists of printed or published reports, brochures, programs and newspaper clippings, but it also includes manuscript essays, notes and some organizational records. Series II Martha's Vineyard Chapter D.A.R. Historical Society records, 1912-1955, consists of registrar's records of gifts and loans to the D.A.R. historical collections including, museum objects and archival materials. It is unclear whether these records formed part of the 1995 accession of D.A.R. museum material, found in Series III, or whether they were acquired at a different time (possibly when the Edgartown chapter transferred some of their collections to the Dukes County Historical Society in 1955). Series III D.A.R. Museum Collections, contains archival materials, 1756-1921, acquired by the Dukes County Historical Society, directly from the Martha's Vineyard Sea Coast Defence Chapter, D.A.R. museum (see accession no. 1995.073). These original historical documents and pamphlet publications formed part of the collections of the D.A.R. museum, and were gifted to that institution by various donors over a number of years. The historical documents accessioned in 1995 were combined, at the time of their arrangement and description in 2007, with an artificial collection of D.A.R. materials already held by the Martha's Vineyard Museum. Due to the ambiguous provenance of Series I and Series II, the materials have been retained in this artificially created record unit.

Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Vacationland comes an emotionally gripping novel about a woman who returns to her hometown in coastal Maine and finds herself pondering the age-old question of what could have been. • “Emotionally gripping.... Filled with humor, insight, summer cocktails, and gorgeous sunsets...An ideal summer read.” —Redbook When Eliza Barnes was growing up in the lobstering village of Little Harbor, Maine, she could haul a trap and row a skiff with the best of them—but she’d always known she’d leave that life behind. Now she’s settled in the high-society circle of an affluent Massachusetts town with her husband and two daughters. But when her father—a widowed lobsterman—injures himself in a boating accident, Eliza returns to her hometown to come to his aid. When she arrives in Maine, she discovers her father’s situation is more dire than he let on. Her homecoming is further complicated by the reemergence of her first love—and the repercussions of their shared secret. Then Eliza meets Mary Brown, a seventeen-year-old local who is at a crossroad of her own, and Eliza can’t help but wonder what her life would have been like if she'd stayed. By turns poignant, incisive, and laugh-out-loud funny, The Captain’s Daughter is an unforgettable novel about the choices we make and the consequences we face in their wake.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now known as a resort community and vacation destination, Martha's Vineyard was once a simple fishing and whaling community. From the popularity of the Methodist Campground, founded in 1835, the Vineyard soon blossomed into a summer vacation mecca, welcoming visitors to its quaint villages and scenic seashores. As whaling lost its economic dominance, tourism became the catalyst for a revived prosperity on the Vineyard. President Grant's visit to the Vineyard in 1874 drew national attention and marked the beginning of several presidential visits to the island. By 1900, Oak Bluffs had developed an amusement park atmosphere with the iconic Flying Horses, toboggan slide and grand seaside hotels. Join local historian Tom Dresser as he reveals the island's transformation into a premier tourist destination.

Through memoirs, music and memorabilia, author Thomas Dresser recounts this dramatic history of the bygone era of whaling on Martha's Vineyard.

Book Chatham Sea Captains in the Age of Sail

Download or read book Chatham Sea Captains in the Age of Sail written by Joseph A. Nickerson Jr. and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008-03-14 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chatham Sea Captains in the Age of Sail chronicles the lives and adventures of twenty-five men who traveled the seas from the eighteenth through the twentieth century. These were extraordinary menmasters of navigation who charted paths from the Cape to the Far East with their regal clipper ships; deep-sea fishermen whose fearless spirit drove them to the Grand Banks and Newfoundland in the quest for their catch; and coastal captains who skirted Americas eastern seaboard in pursuit of trade. Spurred on by the Industrial Revolutions demands, these mariners continued their pelagic exploration while pirates, privateers and Confederate raiders tested their mettle. The sea was both foe and ally. To meet the foe was the challenge; to sail her waters and return home as true masters was the force that drove these men to excellence.

Book To the New Owners

Download or read book To the New Owners written by Madeleine Blais and published by Atlantic Monthly Press. This book was released on 2017-07-04 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist “gives a familial face to the mystique of Martha’s Vineyard” in a memoir with “gentle humor and . . . elegiac sweetness” (Kirkus Reviews). A National Book Critics Circle Award finalist In the 1970s, Madeleine Blais’s in-laws purchased a vacation house on Martha’s Vineyard. A little more than two miles down a dirt road, it had no electricity or modern plumbing, the roof leaked, and mice had invaded the walls. It was perfect. Sitting on Tisbury Great Pond—well-stocked with delicious oysters and crab—the house faced the ocean and the sky. Though improvements were made, the ethos remained the same: no heat, television, or telephone. Instead, there were countless hours at the beach, meals cooked and savored with friends, nights talking under the stars, until, in 2014, the house was sold. To the New Owners is Madeleine Blais’s “witty and charming . . . deeply felt memoir” of this house, and of the Vineyard itself, from the history of the island and its famous visitors, to the ferry, the pie shops, the quirky charms and customs, and the abundant natural beauty. But more than that, this is an elegy for a special place—a retreat that held the intimate history of her family (The National Book Review).

Book The Hard Way Around

Download or read book The Hard Way Around written by Geoffrey Wolff and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-11-29 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1895 Joshua Slocum set sail from Gloucester, Massachusetts, in the Spray, a thirty-seven-foot sloop. More than three years later, he became the first man to circumnavigate the globe solo, and his account of that voyage, Sailing Alone Around the World, made him internationally famous. But scandal soon followed, and a decade later, with his finances failing, he set off alone once more—never to be seen again. In this definitive portrait of an icon of adventure, Geoffrey Wolff describes, with authority and admiration, a life that would see hurricanes, shipwrecks, pirate attacks, cholera, smallpox, and no shortage of personal tragedy.
