Book Benjamin Britten

  • Author : Graham Elliott
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford

Download or read book Benjamin Britten written by Graham Elliott and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-12-08 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Britten's death in 1976, numerous articles and books have been written about his life and work. Much has been made of the strong influences of his pacifism and his homosexuality. It is often suggested that Britten felt himself to be an outsider from 'normal' society, and that this accounts for the his concern to portray the 'outsider' in his operas. There is no doubt that this is an important aspect of Britten's art, but the present work attempts to show that his music embraces much wider and more universal concerns, and in addressing those concerns there is a clearly defined pattern of spiritual influence. Part One of the book examines Britten's early life, and the strong presence which the Church had in his childhood and adolescence. It explores the way in which certain spiritual influences were first manifested, and how, like the more specifically musical 'themes' which Donald Mitchell has noted, they can be traced throughout Britten's life and work. The author was privileged to have conversations with two clergymen who were influential in Britten's life, as well as gathering valuable insights through a long series of conversations with Sir Peter Pears. Part Two examines a wide range of the composer's music in which a spiritual dimension can be traced. The specifically liturgical music has received rather less critical notice than Britten's larger works. The music is discussed here, and shown to possess musical characteristics in common with the larger works. Britten could not be described as a conventional Christian; still less is it true to describe him, as Eric Walter White has done, as 'keen, wherever possible, to work within the framework of the Church of England'. Nevertheless, his spirituality was rooted in the religious experience of his childhood. This book seeks to demonstrate that Britten retained a sense of the Christian values absorbed in childhood and adolescence, and that these - along with the specifically Christian heritage of plainsong - were strongly influential in his choice and treatment of themes.

Download or read book The Canticle of The Rainbow written by Hiranya. and published by HMR Books. This book was released on 2022-11-23 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “When Poetry meets Art, unforgettable things are born …” An eclectic collection of narrative poems and short ballads, written and illustrated by Hiranya. This special poetry book is not for instant gratification. If you are curious to dig deep a little to bring in your own imaginations and enjoy lyrical story telling, then you have found the perfect book. The author is taking you through a sentimental journey of ‘life’, yet it is metaphorical that the reader will experience the deeper meanings of smaller things that matter. Divided into four chapters, each will talk about stages of life in a form of a rainbow. The book covers intimate stories full of rhythm and unforeseen matters. The author generously touches upon the melody of true love and sorrow; the good and the evil around us; the sensual beauty we fail to see; the acceptance of flows; the power of inner strength and fading of one’s soul into oblivion.

Book The Serpent and the Rose The Immaculate Conception and Hispanic Poetry in the Late Medieval Period

Download or read book The Serpent and the Rose The Immaculate Conception and Hispanic Poetry in the Late Medieval Period written by Lesley K. Twomey and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-06-03 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Serpent and the Rose examines the theological and liturgical context for the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception in the Middle Ages, from primary sources in Iberian archives. Its main focus is a study of Marian poetry from Alfonso the Wise and Gonzalo de Berceo through to the poetry collections of the late fifteenth century, showing how poets took themes from the Bible and apocryphal literature, combining them to defend and praise Mary’s conception without sin. Individual chapters assess how they depicted Mary’s prefiguration in the Old Testament by the Woman who defeated the serpent, the young bride of the Song of Songs, or the semi-deity, Wisdom, how they portray her as the mystic rose and as the new Eve.

Book Sermons on the Canticle of Canticles Volumes 1 2

Download or read book Sermons on the Canticle of Canticles Volumes 1 2 written by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 819 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So far as I am aware, this is the first attempt on the part of a Catholic to render St. Bernard’s famous Discourses on the Canticle of Canticles available for English readers. It is passing strange that it should be so; passing strange that the most important work, perhaps, of him who has been called by excellence the Doctor of Love and the Prince of Mystics, should be so neglected. But the Sermons on the Canticle are not singular in this respect. The same neglect has been extended to practically all the writings of the Melliduous Doctor, with great loss to spirituality. Book Katherine Anne Porter Collected Stories and Other Writings LOA 186

Download or read book Katherine Anne Porter Collected Stories and Other Writings LOA 186 written by Katherine Anne Porter and published by Library of America. This book was released on 2008-09-18 with total page 1385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize– and National Book Award–winning volume of writings from the author of Pale Horse, Pale Rider—now combined with little-known works of prose for the very first time Eudora Welty said that Katherine Anne Porter “writes stories with a power that stamps them to their very last detail on the memory.” Set in her native Texas and her beloved Mexico, prewar Nazi Germany and the gothic Old South, they are stories of love, outrage, betrayal, and spiritual reckoning that are severe but never cruel, and always exquisitely precise. They number fewer than thirty, but as Robert Penn Warren commented, “many are unsurpassed in modern fiction.” The Library of America now reprints the landmark 1965 volume, The Collected Stories of Katherine Anne Porter—which features tales like “Pale Horse, Pale Rider” and “Flowering Judas”—and pairs it with a completely new selection from Porter’s long-out-of-print short prose. Expanding the contents of her 1952 collection The Days Before to include both early journalism and major pieces from her final three decades, the prose works collected here are grouped in four parts: critical essays on writers she loved and learned from, including James, Cather, Lawrence, and Colette; personal essays and speeches on such topics as the craft of writing, her own work, women in myth and in history, and American politics; essays and reports on Mexican life, letters, and revolution; and two previously uncollected forays into autobiography. LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an independent nonprofit cultural organization founded in 1979 to preserve our nation’s literary heritage by publishing, and keeping permanently in print, America’s best and most significant writing. The Library of America series includes more than 300 volumes to date, authoritative editions that average 1,000 pages in length, feature cloth covers, sewn bindings, and ribbon markers, and are printed on premium acid-free paper that will last for centuries.

Book Britten s Century

Download or read book Britten s Century written by Mark Bostridge and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2013 marks the centenary of the birth of Benjamin Britten. Here is an outstanding collection of essays to mark the event. Britten's Century considers various aspects of Britten's life and work. The book is written by biographers, performers and music critics. Here is a wealth of subject matter - Britten's operatic output, his orchestral works, his contribution to the revival of English song. Biographically, this book moves on beyond the relationship with Peter Pears and the salacious speculation about his infatuation with various boys, to a consideration of Britten's experience as a homosexual man living in a largely homophobic society. Another area here which is often overlooked is the view of Britten from outside the British Isles - the USA and Italy, where his operas have long been extremely popular.
