Book excerpt: This book is the result of a life-time of interest in the Crosiers and presents the history in England and France of this religious Order, known officially as the Canons Regular of the Order of the Holy Cross. The core of the book is two chapters presenting the history of the Crosier in England (there called the Crutched Friars) and and in France (there known as the Croisiers). A first chapter discuses the origin and early years of the Crosier Order, its place among other orders of the Holy Cross and its spirituality. Then after the core of the book, the Afterword begins with a very short history of the Crosiers from the French Revolution to Vatican II. This is followed by a partial history of the Crosiers from Vatican II to the present, concentrating on the history of the Crosier Order in the United States. The third part presents a series of reflections on chapters one through three. The final part of the Afterword contains reflections on the present state of the Crosiers in light of its past.

Book The Chronicle of the Canons Regular of Mount Saint Agnes

Download or read book The Chronicle of the Canons Regular of Mount Saint Agnes written by Thomas a Kempis and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chronicle of Mount St. Agnes is the only work of Thomas à Kempis of which no English translation has yet appeared, and even in its original form the book is not readily accessible to readers, since the only text is that published by Peter and John Beller of Antwerp in 1621. The ordinary collections of the works of à Kempis do not contain the Chronicle, although there is no doubt as to the authenticity of the book, which is of considerable importance to students of the movement known as “The New Devotion,” and to those who are interested in the Brotherhood of the Common Life. The last nine pages of the Latin text have been added by an anonymous writer, and carry on the chronicle from the year 1471, in which à Kempis dies, to 1477, but since this portion of the book is included in the first printed edition, and contains a notice of the author written by a contemporary member of the community, I have included the addition in the present translation of the Chronicle. Download or read book Medieval Monasticism written by C.H. Lawrence and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval Monasticism traces the Western Monastic tradition from its fourth-century origins in the deserts of Egypt and Syria through the many and varied forms of religious life it assumed during the Middle Ages. It explores the relationship between monasteries and the secular world around them. For a thousand years, the great monastic houses and religious orders were a prominent feature of the social landscape of the West, and their leaders figured as much in the political as on the spiritual map of the medieval world. In this book many of them, together with their supporters and critics, are presented to us and speak their minds to us. We are shown, for instance, the controversy between the Benedictines and the reformed monasticism of the twelfth century and the problems that confronted women in religious life. A detailed glossary offers readers a helpful vocabulary of the subject. This fifth edition has been revised by Janet Burton to include an updated bibliography and an introduction which discusses recent trends in monastic studies, including reinterpretations of issues of reform and renewal, new scholarship on religious women, and interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches. This book is essential reading for both students and scholars of the medieval world.

Book The Medieval Economy of Salvation

Download or read book The Medieval Economy of Salvation written by Adam J. Davis and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-15 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Medieval Economy of Salvation, Adam J. Davis shows how the burgeoning commercial economy of western Europe in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, alongside an emerging culture of Christian charity, led to the establishment of hundreds of hospitals and leper houses. Focusing on the county of Champagne, he looks at the ways in which charitable organizations and individuals—townspeople, merchants, aristocrats, and ecclesiastics—saw in these new institutions a means of infusing charitable giving and service with new social significance and heightened expectations of spiritual rewards. In tracing the rise of the medieval hospital during a period of intense urbanization and the transition from a gift economy to a commercial one, Davis makes clear how embedded this charitable institution was in the wider social, cultural, religious, and economic fabric of medieval life.

This book was released on 2023-06-25 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " The House of Mount St. Agnes, which lieth outside the walls of the town of Zwolle, and on the eastern side thereof, had its origin and completion in this way. The place used to be called in the vulgar tongue Mount Nemel and lieth not far from Zwolle, but one may traverse the distance in the space of an hour. Now there were in the State of Zwolle certain faithful men who had been turned wholly to God by Master Gerard Groote. These men had builded them an house, in a suburb belonging to the city, near an ancient Convent of Béguines, and here they served God humbly and with devotion. Amongst these the chief was John of Ummen, a man dedicated to God, and greatly beloved by Gerard; and with him there abode likewise Wychmann Rurinch, Reyner, son of Leo of Renen, and two or three others that were well disposed. Moreover, a certain Clerk that dwelt in those parts named Wittecoep, had joined himself to them and lived among them devoutly. There was also the mother of John of Ummen, named Regeland, a widow of ripe age, who ministered to the necessities of these servants of God, giving good heed to the care of the house as a faithful Martha. Most gladly would she listen to the Word of God, and, like Mary, was never sated with the sweetness of the Holy Scriptures that were read."
