Book Epic Wanderer

Download or read book Epic Wanderer written by D'Arcy Jenish and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular historian D’Arcy Jenish recreates the adventure and sacrifice of mapmaker David Thompson’s fascinating life in the wilderness of North America. Epic Wanderer, the first full-length biography of David Thompson, is set in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries against a broad canvas of dramatic rivalries—between the United States and British North America, between the Hudson’s Bay Company and its Montreal-based rival, the North West Co., and between the various First Nations thrown into disarray by the advent of guns, horses and alcohol. Less celebrated than his contemporaries Lewis and Clark, Thompson spent nearly three decades (1784–1812) surveying and mapping over 1.2 million square miles of largely uncharted Indian territory. Travelling across the prairies, over the Rockies and on to the Pacific, Thompson transformed the raw data of his explorations into a map of the Canadian West. Measuring ten feet by seven feet, and laid out with astonishing accuracy, the map became essential to the politicians and diplomats who would decide upon the future of the rich and promising lands of the West. Yet its creator worked without personal glory and died in penniless obscurity. Drawing extensively on David Thompson’s personal journals, illustrated with his detailed sketches, intricate notebook pages and the map itself, Epic Wanderer charts the life of a man who risked everything in the name of scientific advancement and exploration.

Book Canada and the British Empire

Download or read book Canada and the British Empire written by Phillip Alfred Buckner and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada and the British Empire traces the evolution of Canada, placing it within the wider context of British imperial history. Beginning with a broad chronological narrative, the volume surveys the country's history from the foundation of the first British bases in Canada in the early seventeenth century, until the patriation of the Canadian constitution in 1982. Historians approach the subject thematically, analysing subjects such as British migration to Canada, the role played by gender in the construction of imperial identities, and the economic relationship between Canada and Britain. Other important chapters examine the history of Newfoundland, the history and legacy of imperial law, and the attitudes of French Canadians and Canada's aboriginal peoples to the imperial relationship. The overall focus of the book is on emphasising the part that Canada played in the British Empire, and on understanding the Canadian response towards imperialism. With contributions from leading scholars in the field, it is essential reading for anyone interested either in the history of Canada or in the history of the British Empire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1942, the Canadian government forced more than 21,000 Japanese Canadians from their homes in British Columbia. They were told to bring only one suitcase each and officials vowed to protect the rest. Instead, Japanese Canadians were dispossessed, all their belongings either stolen or sold. The definitive statement of a major national research partnership, Landscapes of Injustice reinterprets the internment of Japanese Canadians by focusing on the deliberate and permanent destruction of home through the act of dispossession. All forms of property were taken. Families lost heirlooms and everyday possessions. They lost decades of investment and labour. They lost opportunities, neighbourhoods, and communities; they lost retirements, livelihoods, and educations. When Japanese Canadians were finally released from internment in 1949, they had no homes to return to. Asking why and how these events came to pass and charting Japanese Canadians' diverse responses, this book details the implications and legacies of injustice perpetrated under the cover of national security. In Landscapes of Injustice the diverse descendants of dispossession work together to understand what happened. They find that dispossession is not a chapter that closes or a period that neatly ends. It leaves enduring legacies of benefit and harm, shame and silence, and resilience and activism.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian West: A Geography of Manitoba and the North-West Territories AS far as it has been found possible, the geography of Western Canada as outlined in this little work has been treated from an inductive standpoint, based on the as sumption that those who study the home region have a fair knowledge of the earth as a whole and the continents. While this is in no way a picture-book, an effort has been made to assist the child to grasp a broad and strong picture of the country by presenting a series of related topics rather than a great number of uninteresting and unrelated facts. The illustrations have been chosen and the maps prepared with the purpose of assisting in the understanding of the text. Book Wildlife Adventures in the Canadian West

Download or read book Wildlife Adventures in the Canadian West written by Dick Dekker and published by Rocky Mountain Books Ltd. This book was released on 2002 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ultimate in wilderness travel in western Canada This is the story of the author's travels and wildlife observations in all seasons of the year accompanied by his sometimes radical thoughts on wildlife preservation. Driven by a deep, personal sense of curiosity, he paddled hundreds of miles down swift Yukon rivers, the Peace River in northwestern Alberta and several remote lake systems in northern Saskatchewan in pursuit of his studies which focus on the intertwined lives of prey and predators. From its beginnings, the narrative flows like a clear, untouched wilderness stream, with lively riffles and quiet pools that give pause for reflection and perspective.
