This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Horticulturist, 1913, Vol. 36 From four acres of red raspberries last season I sold almost one thousand dollars' worth of fruit. The bushes were set out in the spring of 1910 in rows seven feet and nine feet apart alternately and twenty inches apart in the row. In a large patch this is an advantage when getting out the old wood, as -a team and wagon can be driven down the nine foot rows and have the brush thrown on from the seven foot rows. The bushes were hoed and cultivated the first summer and made a fine growth before fall. In August the bushes were cut back to two feet and in October the bushes were strong and the canes large and they Wintered well. In the spring of 1911 the ground was hoed and cultivated and kept clean all summer. In spite of the severe drought of that season we picked feur thousand eight hundred baskets from the patch. The old wood was removed as soon as the crop was off and the new canes cut back to about two and a half feet and not over four canes left in a hill, three was the average. Since that time the scale has caused serious damage and loss, especially to the owners of peach orchards; but, thanks to the energetic manner in which the matter was taken in hand by the Depart ment of Agriculture, we are now able to say that methods for the controlling of this pest have been devised and are in operation and that the majority of the fruit growers recog nize that the scale may be controlled and the vigor of an orchard maintained independent of its surroundings. It may not be possi ble to entirely eradicate the scale, and, like the potato bug, it mav always be with us; but, just as the proper use of arsenical poisons may be used to control the latter, so the lime-sulphur wash may be used for the former and with equally good results. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Horticulturist, Vol. 25: January, 1902 For many years after the California orch ards were first attacked, it was supposed that the Scale had been introduced from Chili, for it was discovered in that country in 1872; but later investigations in Chili showed pretty conclusively that the Scale was not a native, but an introduced insect. So this theory was in time abandoned. Next, Prof. J. B. Smith suggested, in 1896, that the native home of the San Jose Scale was probably in one of the Northern Pacific States. This theory was, however, never very seriously entertained by many of our best entomologists, and was also soon abandoned. These have done very well for me. Let the seed ripen thoroughly before picking. Prepare a shal low box with good garden soil, press it down with the hand and have the soil damp. Scatter the seed (for it is very fine) sparingly. Sift a little fine soil over the seed. In order to avoid hardening the ground when watering place a piece of tissue paper over the box and water through it. The seeds will not come up if the soil is hard. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Canadian Horticulturist, 1909, Vol. 32 In a short talk on grafting, Mr. Macoun said that the scion and stock when grafted constitute merely a mechanical union, not an organic one. Sometimes the top will outgrow the stock because not enough sap is supplied. The peculiarity of the stock always remains. There is individuality in trees as there is in animals. Each bud on the tree is really an individual. Top grafting increases fruitfulness. It may not increase the total amount but it Will make the scions earlier in fruiting.
