Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses the process of union among the Protestant churches of Ontario soon after Confederation, and though the organic union is still incomplete, the "Protestant outlook" exists today even more certainly than it did in Canada West. The end of the Clergy Reserves marked the removal of the last major barrier to Protestant unity of outlook, and paved the way for the development of a sort of omnibus Protestant denomination, which was not an organization but an attitude.

Download or read book Pioneer Public Service written by John E. Hodgetts and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1956-12-15 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes a new approach to Canadian politics, from the administrative side. It provides, first, a description of the evolution and structure of the administrative machine which, with few fundamental changes, still serves the Canadian nation, and in the process it attempts to acknowledge and appraise the hitherto unsung contributions of the public servant to the welfare of a pioneer community. A second objective is to disclose the presence in the pioneer public service of certain basic administrative issues which today still rise to perplex both the student and practitioner of public administration. And, finally, this study reveals a neglected aspect of the winning of responsible government in Canada—the author contends that the recognition of the constitutional principle on the political level, did not, in fact, coincide with its practical implementation at the administrative level. As Dr. R. MacGregor Dawson points out in his Foreword, "Few students, on suspects, appreciate how great has been the influence of the permanent officials in the years before Confederation, nor do they have an adequate comprehension of the degree to which administrative decisions of those days, both by Ministers and officials, determined many of the present practices. An astonishingly large number of the problems, moreover, will be found to have remained substantially the same for the past hundred years. The scheme of departmental organization, the delegation of authority and the allotment of responsibility, the application of financial controls, the intricate give and take between the political non-technical Minister and the technically trained specialist—these in some aspect or another have been the constant concern of the administrator: a different time, a different place, has simply shifted the emphasis a little one way or the other." Professor Hodgetts writes with humour and point; his book is a brilliant addition to the Canadian Government Series, in which it is the seventh volume to appear.
Download or read book Upper Canada written by Gerald M. Craig and published by OUP Canada. This book was released on 2013-09-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years following the American Revolution, some forty thousand immigrants from the thirteen colonies came to Canada, many settling in what is now Southern Ontario. These newcomers would add significantly to the region's economic growth, as a ready supply of agricultural labour, knowledge of the trades, and wealth. This period saw expansion in education, changes in land usage, and much agricultural output as land was parceled out to the newcomers. The structure of government expanded to a considerable degree, and transportation and communication were also developed. Other institutions grew to meet the needs of the swelling population, including education and religion. These years also saw considerable political upheaval in the way of agitation for reform, conflict among different groups, and the growth of a local culture. Craig's guide to the changes in Upper Canada is still considered one of the best descriptions of this period of rapid change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canada Company was responsible for the opening and settling of over two million acres of land in Upper Canada. Author Robert C. Lee focuses his attention on the extensive parcel of land on the shores of Lake Huron that became known as the Huron Tract. His comprehensive research explores the underlying forces leading to the formation of the Company, the intriguing mix of people charged with responsibilities for the Company and the overall impact of its operations, leading to its present-day legacy. The politics of the day, coupled with diverse and colourful personalities – such as John Galt, Tiger Dunlop, William Allan, Thomas Mercer Jones, Frederick Widder, Sir Peregrine Maitland, Bishop Macdonnell and Bishop Strachan – introduce an interesting blend of vision, intrigue, mischief and day-to-day survival strategies that make for compelling reading. Add to this the shareholders perspective of the Company versus the settlers perspective and you have a fascinating glimpse of pioneer conditions. Included are descriptions of early towns such as Guelph and Goderich, as well as background on the Huron Tract township names. "Robert Lee’s outstanding book brings to life the unusual assemblage of characters who were instrumental in the development of Upper Canada’s largest private settlement scheme – the Huron Tract. Their relationships with each other, and especially with the Canada Company for which many of them worked, make a great story." – Lutzen Riedstra, Stratford-Perth Archivist "Robert Lee has vividly recreated the personalities and the political intrigues that were part of the Canada Company’s operation – the largest one of its type in Ontario’s history. The most comprehensive work to date on this fascinating era, this book is eminently readable and a must-have for history lovers. – Ron Brown, author of Ghost Towns of Ontario
