Book The productivity puzzle

Download or read book The productivity puzzle written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Productivity growth is the key to sustainably improving the quality of life of Canadians. Over the long run, wages, wealth and GDP per capita are integrally linked to a country's productivity performance. Yet the alarming reality is that labour productivity growth in Canada's business sector has been in structural decline since the 1970s. Even more concerning is that since 2000, labour productivity growth has slowed to a crawl. The scope of this trend has not been mirrored by other developed countries, and it is taking a toll on Canada's international economic clout. Between 1990 and 2008, Canada's GDP per capita slipped from 5th to 11th among OECD countries.

Book Tales From Two Neighbors

Download or read book Tales From Two Neighbors written by Mr.Martin D. Cerisola and published by INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND. This book was released on 2000-10-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper assesses productivity trends in Canada vis-a-vis the United States from two perspectives. The first one is based on estimates of total factor productivity. The second one decomposes productivity growth into two sources: investment-specific technical change, associated with improvements in the quality of the capital stock, and neutral technical change, associated with the organization of productive activities. The results indicate that investment-specific technical change is the major underlying cause of the pickup in productivity in Canada and the narrowing of the productivity gap with the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study discuses issues and problems associated with international productivity and real income comparisons. It reviews the trends in Canada's productivity and the trends in Canada's labour productivity and real income performance, relative to other G-7 countries with special reference to the United States. It also outlines the theoretical underpinnings of an econometric model to explain productivity growth and gives a brief summary of regression results for Canada, the United States, Japan, and West Germany. It analyzes the causes of the slowdown in Canadian productivity since 1973 using the estimated equations. In addition, it examines the reasons for Canada's poor manufacturing productivity performance relative to that of the major economies and summarizes the findings of the study.

Book A Comparison of Canadian and U S Productivity Levels electronic Resource an Exploration of Measurement Issues

Download or read book A Comparison of Canadian and U S Productivity Levels electronic Resource an Exploration of Measurement Issues written by Baldwin, John R. (John Russel) and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the level of labour productivity in Canada relative to that of the United States in 1999. In doing so, it addresses two main issues. The first is the comparability of the measures of gross domestic product & labour inputs that the statistical agency in each country produces. The second is how a price index can be constructed to reconcile estimates of Canadian & US gross domestic product per hour worked that are calculated in Canadian & US dollars respectively. After constructing such an index and taking into account alternative assumptions about Canada/US prices, the paper provides point estimates of Canada's relative labour productivity of the total economy in 1999. The paper recommends a confidence interval to be applied to the estimates and notes the sensitivity of the interval to assumptions made about import & export prices.

Book Productivity and Pay in the US and Canada

Download or read book Productivity and Pay in the US and Canada written by Jacob Greenspon and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study the productivity-pay relationship in the United States and Canada along two dimensions. The first is divergence: the degree to which the levels of productivity and pay have diverged. The second is delinkage: the degree to which incremental increases in the rate of productivity growth translate into incremental increases in the rate of growth of pay, holding all else equal. We show that in both countries the pay of typical workers has diverged substantially from average labor productivity over recent decades, driven by both rising labor income inequality and a declining labor share of income. Even as the levels of productivity and pay have grown further apart, we find evidence for some linkage between productivity and pay in both countries: a one percentage point increase in the rate of productivity growth is associated with a positive increase in the rate of pay growth, holding all else equal. This linkage appears stronger in the US than in Canada. Overall, our findings lead us to tentatively conclude that policies or trends which lead to incremental increases in productivity growth, particularly in large relatively closed economies like the USA, will tend to raise middle class incomes. At the same time, other factors orthogonal to productivity growth have been driving productivity and typical pay further apart, emphasizing that much of the evolution in middle class living standards will depend on measures bearing on relative incomes.

Download or read book A Comparison of Canadian and U S Productivity Levels written by John R. Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the level of labour productivity in Canada relative to that of the United States in 1999. In doing so, it addresses two main issues. The first is the comparability of the measures of GDP and labour inputs that the statistical agency in each country produces. Second, it investigates how a price index can be constructed to reconcile estimates of Canadian and U.S. GDP per hour worked that are calculated in Canadian and U.S. dollars respectively. After doing so, and taking into account alternative assumptions about Canada/U.S. prices, the paper provides point estimates of Canada's relative labour productivity of the total economy in 1999 of around 94% that of the United States. The paper points out that at least a 10 percentage point confidence interval should be applied to these estimates. The size of the range is particularly sensitive to assumptions that are made about import and export prices.
