Book excerpt: It is an oddly shaped district in a state that generally is but a small blip on the national political radar screen. But in 1998, and again in 2000, Connecticut's 5th Congressional District attracted national media attention as the home to one of the hottest races in the country, pitting Democratic incumbent Jim Maloney against Republican challenger Mark Nielsen. Bill Clinton, Al Gore, George W. Bush, John McCain, Jack Kemp and Elizabeth Dole were among the political heavyweights who visited this district to campaign for the congressional candidate of their party. "The Fight For The Fifth" chronicles the events, developments and strategies of these two election campaigns. The book looks at the demographics, the candidates and their campaign staffs, as well as includes a retrospective analysis of the election from the viewpoints of the candidates, their staffs and the author.

Book Connecticut Politics at the Crossroads

Download or read book Connecticut Politics at the Crossroads written by Gary L. Rose and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1992 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents the decline of political parties in the State of Connecticut. The author presents an extensive description of statewide political trends, taps the perceptions of state lawmakers regarding the current condition and influence of party organization, and provides the results of detailed interviews with seasoned politicians to demonstrate that political parties in Connecticut have declined in their capacity to structure the course of state politics. The evidence is compelling in a state often identified as a model in terms of powerful and effective political parties. It is the author's contention that the quality of Connecticut politics and the accountability of state government is in peril due to the concern that the new trends identified in Connecticut could signal the emergence of a much larger crisis in American state politics.
