Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many people, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia evokes images of deserts, camels, and oil, along with rich sheikh in white robes, oppressed women in black veils, and terrorists. But when Loring Danforth traveled through the country in 2012, he found a world much more complex and inspiring than he could have ever imagined. Ê With vivid descriptions and moving personal narratives, Danforth takes us across the Kingdom, from the headquarters of Saudi Aramco, the countryÕs national oil company on the Persian Gulf, to the centuries-old city of Jeddah on the Red Sea coast with its population of undocumented immigrants from all over the Muslim world. He presents detailed portraits of a young woman jailed for protesting the ban on women driving, a Sufi scholar encouraging Muslims and Christians to struggle together with love to know God, and an artist citing the Quran and using metal gears and chains to celebrate the diversity of the pilgrims who come to Mecca. Crossing the KingdomÊpaints a lucid portrait of contemporary Saudi culture and the lives of individuals, who like us all grapple with modernity at the dawn of the twenty-first century.

Book Conscious Confidence

Download or read book Conscious Confidence written by Sarah Mane and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A confidence-boosting program based on the spiritual insights of Sanskrit, the language of enlightenment • Draws on traditional stories from East and West and scholarly works to reveal the wisdom behind Sanskrit words and how to experience them to transform our lives and build confidence, certainty, clarity, and success • Explains the fourfold energy of the Conscious Confidence program: Focusing, Uniting, Simplifying, and Energizing • Offers practical exercises for discovering our inner certainty and overcoming fear, anxiety, and insecurity Called “the language of enlightenment,” Sanskrit is truly unique among all the languages of the world. This ancient language, upon which so many of our English words are based, gives us an entire system to show what to do in order to experience the full meaning of a word. In this profound way, Sanskrit offers a touchstone of timeless wisdom that each of us can access to transform our lives and build confidence, certainty, clarity, and success. In Conscious Confidence, Sanskrit scholar Sarah Mane offers a practical confidence-boosting program, derived from the deepest meanings of Sanskrit concepts, to help you establish a safe and secure reference point from which to see the world and make clear decisions on how to act, what to say, and how to feel. She explores the Sanskrit roots of English words related to confidence and success, unlocking rich, three-dimensional understandings of each word as well as guidance on how to obtain confidence and find your path in life. For example, the word attitude, based on its Sanskrit roots, means “our point of view, our intent, and our conduct.” A positive attitude means we have a self-aware point of view, have an intent for the good, and conduct ourselves in ways that reflect both. This true attitude gives us a positive and powerful place from which to view the world. The author also incorporates traditional stories from East and West, such as the Mahabharata and the works of Plato, scholarly references, and accounts of people discovering hidden depths in their own lives through the ancient truth of Sanskrit. Drawing upon the deeper meanings behind several Sanskrit words for confidence, Mane outlines principles for harnessing the fourfold energies of Conscious Confidence and offers practical exercises for discovering our inner certainty. She explains how the Conscious Confidence method allows us to tackle the growing anxiety and fear that hang like a shadow over many of us and look to the unchanging core of selfhood for certainty, rather than ever-changing externals. With the Conscious Confidence program and the wisdom of Sanskrit, you can discover a strong and steady inner source of compassion, self-direction, self-empowerment, and the life force of self-confidence.

Book European Discovery and Exploration of Australia

Download or read book European Discovery and Exploration of Australia written by Erwin Feeken and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The map of Australia abounds with fascinating geographical place-names, the origins of which have, for long, been hidden in the journals of our early explorers. Now after nine years of research, Erwin Feeken, a highly qualified cartographer, and his wife, Gerda, have finalised the first complete record of Australian geographical place-names and the most comprehensive general reference work on Australian exploration ever published. In European Discovery and Exploration of Australia, there are twenty-three beautifully drawn four-colour maps plus index showing the routes of more than 120 explorers with the locality of their named features numbered to accord with a Key to the Maps. The place-names in the Key have been numbered approximately in chronological order of their naming, though places found during a single expedition have been grouped together. There is also a gazetteer containing over four thousand place-names alphabetically arranged with notes on their origins. The map reference numbers (in brackets) form a cross-reference with the Key to the Maps. The work is introduced by a foreword from Lord Casey and an essay on the nature of Australian exploration by Professor O. H. K. Spate, director of the Research School of Pacific Studies, Australian National University. The text, comprising a survey of Australian exploration, is arranged in the form of biographies of the explorers (describing, for the first time, several almost unknown figures) with emphasis on their expeditions and under the following headings: “The Approach to Australia”; “Exploration before Settlement, 1606–1788”; “From Botany Bay to the Blue Mountains, 1788–1813”; “Land and Sea Expeditions, 1813–1901.” This section of the book is very fully illustrated with 18 full-colour plates and some 150 black-and-white photographs, mostly reproductions of early prints. Concluding the book are bibliographies of sources and references, a list of illustrations, and an index of explorers and ships. The comprehensive nature of this work will ensure that it becomes a valuable reference book for students, while the text and illustrations will appeal to all who are interested in our history. Collectors of Australiana will welcome this most attractive addition to the ever-increasing number of available publications.

Book Hell in the Holy Land

    Book Details:
  • Author : David R. Woodward
  • Publisher : University Press of Kentucky
  • Release : 2014-04-23
  • ISBN : 0813146747

Download or read book Hell in the Holy Land written by David R. Woodward and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compelling WWI history reveals the harsh realities of the British Army’s Middle East campaign through the firsthand accounts of soldiers. The massive flow of British troops and equipment to Egypt made that country host to the largest British military base outside of Britain and France. Though many soldiers found the atmosphere in Cairo exotic, the desert countryside made operations extremely difficult. The intense heat frequently sickened soldiers, and unruly camels were the only practical means of transport across the soft sands of the Sinai. The constant shortage of potable water was a persistent problem for the troops. Drawing on the diaries, letters, and memoirs of British soldiers who fought in Egypt and Palestine, David R. Woodward paints a vivid picture of the mayhem, terror, boredom, filth, and sacrifice they endured. The voices of these soldiers offer a forgotten perspective of the Great War, describing not only the physical and psychological toll of combat but the daily struggles of soldiers who were stationed in an unfamiliar environment that often proved just as antagonistic as the enemy.
