Download or read book The Cambridge Natural History Vol 9 Classic Reprint written by S. F. Harmer and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cambridge Natural History, Vol. 9 In this volume of the "Cambridge Natural History" the author has attempted to meet a need which he believes to be somewhat widely felt. Recognising the fact that there is at the present time an abundance of popular, or only slightly scientific, works on Birds, some of which touch but superficially upon the individual species composing the various groups, as regards their plumage or habits, while others pay little or no attention to correctness of Classification, he has essayed the difficult and apparently unattempted task of including in some six hundred pages a short description of the majority of the forms in many of the Families, and of the most typical or important of the innumerable species included in the large Passerine Order. Prefixed to each group is a brief summary of the Structure and Habits; a few further particulars of the same nature being subsequently added where necessary, with a statement of the main Fossil forms as yet recorded. Thus it is hoped that the work may be of real use, not only to the tyro in Ornithology, but also to the traveller or resident in foreign parts interested in the subject, who, without time or opportunity for referring to the works of specialists, may yet need the aid of a concise account of the species likely to cross his path. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cassell's Natural History, Vol. 2 Comparatively few of the fiesh-eaters are of direct use to man, at any rate while alive, yet one member of the group - the Dog - is the most useful of all domestic quadrupeds. Though derived from one of the most savage of all - the Wolf. The Ferret, the Cheetah and the Cat are also more or less domesticated; but they come far below the Dog in amiable qualities, and in value to man. Below their value in service comes the use of their most beautiful skins; and still lower down the scent, derivable from a few species. Yet from these two last sources our fair ones seek to derive new charms. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Natural History Vol 2

Download or read book Natural History Vol 2 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural History, Vol. 2: Zoology When, in 1901, the Expedition of the S.S. 'Discovery, ' under Captain Scott, R.N., was sent to the Antarctic Regions, the Trustees of the British Museum gave their assistance to this national enterprise by allowing the cases containing the natural history specimens which might be obtained by the Expedition to be sent to the Natural History Museum for unpacking and sorting. They further undertook to publish a detailed report on the collections so obtained, under the superintendence of the Director of the Natural History Departments. Some of the most important collections have been dealt with by naturalists who were members of the Expedition. Thus, the Mammals and Birds are described by Dr. Edward A. Wilson, the Isopoda and Pycnogonida by Mr. T. V. Hodgson, and the Rocks (in relation to Field Geology) by Mr. H. T. Ferrar. Other groups have been dealt with by members of the staff of the Natural History Departments of the British Museum: Mr. Boulenger describes the Fishes; Mr. E. A. Smith, the Gastropoda, Lamellibranchia, and Brachiopoda; Mr. Jeffrey Bell, the Echinoderma; Dr. Calman, the Crustacea Decapoda, and the Cumacea; Mr. Kirkpatrick, the non-calcareous Sponges; whilst Mr. G. T. Prior has prepared a petrographical description of the Rock-specimens. It has been necessary to obtain the assistance of other specialists in order to deal with the rest of the collections.
