Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bring an experience from your childhood back or pass the joy of nursery rhymes on to the next generation with this fantastic illustrated collection. The Big Book of Nursery Rhymes contains a huge array of rhymes and songs, enough to satisfy any reader. It has all the most popular rhymes and is a great resource for anyone who remembers these charming parts of childhood but has less than perfect recall of them. As is natural with an originally oral tradition some of the versions here may be slightly different to the ones you remember from childhood, additionally some are greatly extended from the simple versions we remember to a full length rhyme. Most of us remember Simple Simon met a pie man going to the fair, but few probably know that once Simon made a great snowball and brought it in to roast. This is just one extra verse of many from the full length nursery rhyme. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About 400 illustrations by Charles Robinson, many full-page illustrations. * * * * * The "Big Book of Nursery Rhymes" (edited by Walter Jerrold, illustrated by Charles Robinson) contains familiar rhymes in a beautiful setting It is indeed a big book, handsome inside and out. The rhymes are the same as we heard in the nursery, the story of Simple Simon, the adventures however, that few of the Writers and illustrators of so-called children's books are able to produce the real genuine article -a book which is suited to children, appreciated by children, and written or drawn for children. Too many of the present-day books for a child, though clever and attractive in themselves, are either far above the heads of the readers to whom they are supposed to appeal, or else, what is much worse, obviously "written down" to the child's level. The average youthful reader detects this at once and very justly resents it. The illustrator has drawn the pictures with rare humor and charm. There are all sorts of verses, game rhymes, historical pieces, folk-lore, counting-out rhymes, in fact, every sort of fragment that we call a nursery rhyme. Some of the longer rhymes have been considerably cut, as for instance in the case of "Jack Horner," of which only one verse is now generally used. The recipient of such a gift as "The Big Book of Nursery Rhymes" is a person to be congratulated. It is a book that will never grow stale or dull with age, and is sure still to be a favorite when more exciting books of adventure begin to pall. The editor and illustrator alike are entitled to hearty praise for this admirable gift book. --The Academy and Literature, Volume 65

Book excerpt: The original color plates from "The Big Book of Nursery Rhymes" are taken from digital scans of the 1920 work, and arranged with their associated nursery rhymes, in an effort to reintroduce delightfully colorful illustrations that are in danger of being lost in the modern age. This republication of nursery rhymes from a century past is intended to give the children of today a peek into the richness of the literature and literary artwork of the past. Nursery rhymes carry fragments of the history, culture, religion, and ideas of the 15th or 16th through the 19th Centuries, which should be preserved and passed on to new generations. Parents and children will love reading these rhymes, and will delight in the wonderful illustrations. Originally Edited by Walter Jerrold. Illustrated by Charles Robinson. Published by Blackie and Son, Ltd., London, 1920. From the Introduction to the full edition: "The very title, Nursery Rhymes, which has come to be associated with a great body of familiar verse, is in itself sufficient indication of the manner in which that verse has been passed down from generation to generation. Who composed the little pieces it is, save in a few cases, impossible to say: some are certainly very old and were doubtless repeated thousands of times before their first appearance in print. References to certain favourites may be found in the pages of the dramatists of Elizabeth's time. "Attempts are sometimes made to read into these Rhymes a deeper significance than the obvious and simple one which has accounted for their enduring popularity in the Nursery, but this volume has no concern with such profound interpretations, any more than have the little people who love the old jingles best. "Students divide our rhymes into narrative pieces, historical, folk-lore, game rhymes, counting-out rhymes, jingles, fragments, and so forth, but for the children for whom and by whom they are remembered, and for whose sake they are here collected and pictured anew, they are just-Nursery Nursery Rhymes." Caution to Parents: Nursery rhymes that were acceptable for children of the 19th Century might prove confusing or unsettling for children of the 21st Century, so far removed in tiome from the manners and issues of that time; parents are encouraged to read these rhymes with their children.

Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION THE very title "Nursery Rhymes," which has come to be associated with a A great body of familiar verse, is in itself sufficient evidence ot how that verse has been passed down from generation to generation. Some pieces date, perhaps, from hundreds of years ago, and had been repeated thousands of times betore they were printed. There are not wanting learned tolk who tell us that there was once, in Britain, a King Cole, and that the only relic of his reign which we have is the verse in which he is shown calling for his pipe, his bowl, and his fiddlers three. Such wise people forget that pipes were not smoked here before the days of Queen Elizabeth, and that fiddles were not known before the sixteenth century. It is certain, however, that some ot these rhymes were familiar in those great days; Shakespeare seems to reter to one
