Book The Call of the Mate Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Call of the Mate Classic Reprint written by Claud Francis Burton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Call of the Mate No horizon is so dim or far away that another just beyond, more dim, more remote and formidable, does not level across the boundless blue. The sky line beyond the Chilco ranch to the north, jagged, rocky, somber, held a repellent warning to the pioneer of the soil, for its mysteries were those of the gold seekers who do not stop until the end has been reached. Then they may turn back, blear eyed, forlorn, disheartened, perhaps, with shoulders stooped, hope blasted on the once eager faces, with the trembling hands which cold and exposure im poses, and with a story which the heart longs to tell to a willing listener. Circled by the broad rim of this distant horizon was a green meadow, ringed with a forest of pine, spruce and fir. On the south edge of the sixty-acre meadow was a cabin of logs; a curl of smoke told of life within. A creek cut the grassy meadow through the center, and to it a few head of cattle had made their way for a drink and were now returning to the corral. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bond and Free: A Tale of the South Upon relating incidents which occurred under the observation of the writer, the suggestion has been frequently made to her that they should be recorded in a book, and placed within the reach of those who are interested in studying the habits of the Southern people before the late war. This volume is presented to the public in compliance with that request, since slavery is now so far removed from us by time that it has become historical. The contingencies of "the peculiar institution" invaded the domestic circle, made children masters and mistresses from infancy, causing them to be reared rulers over their sable playmates, and impressed on their unfolding minds ideas of superiority in. birth, which, as they advanced to manhood or womanhood, qualified them to exercise authority to a degree inconceivable by those raised with different surroundings. That miscegenation was of frequent occurrence is not to be denied; but mulatto children, being held by their darker mothers, were identified with the maternal race; yet there were instances where amalgamation was extended to successive generations, and State laws were enacted liberating those who possessed a certain degree of consanguinity with the Caucasian race. In the slave markets, among which that of New Orleans was pre-eminent, quadroon girls, possessing superior personal attractions, commanded a high price; and in exceptional instances, where they were received into families, and enjoyed advantages of mental and moral education, they became women of intelligence and sterling worth. Our heroine is not a myth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. That, it was currently believed by the entire portion of the population who speculated on the sub ject, was kept open by the evil spirits. Certain it was that no human foot ever trod the narrow, tortuous line that ran through the brakes as deviously as the noiseless stagnant ditches that curved through the jungle, where the musk-rat played and the moccasin slept unmolested. Yet there it lay, plain and well-defined, month after month, and year after year, as NO Haid Pawn itself stood, amid its sur rounding swamps, all undisturbed and un changing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Call of the South: A Presentation of the Home Principle in Missions, Especially as It Applies to the South; Arranged to Meet the Needs of Mission Study Classes and Also of the General Reader This is an effort to present the appeal of homeland mis sions from the angle of underlying principles and motives. Only those specific fields of endeavor are considered that seem best to show the magnitude of the home principle in missions. The undertaking is to interpret the missionary needs of the South to itself. Rather than to others. Per haps the story will not therefore be less informing to others. The book is intended for Mission Study Classes and the general reader. It is also earnestly hoped that busy pastors will find in it that which shall stimulate their minds afresh. As they seek to arouse their churches to a sense of the moral grandeur and strategic significance of the work of bringing the people of the South both to know and to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Book Uncle Isaac Or Old Days in the South

Download or read book Uncle Isaac Or Old Days in the South written by William Dudley Powers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Uncle Isaac; Or Old Days in the South: A Remembrance of the South One morning toward the summer of 1865, a lady sent her card into the private office of a well-to-do New York gentleman. She was admitted. The gentleman, after courteously receiving her, asked to what he owed the honor of the call. She replied, that she was a Southern lady in some distress, and had called to solicit his assistance. Through the devastation incident upon the war, just closed, she added, she had been left with a plantation, but without seed or implements or mules, or money to purchase these necessary articles of equipment, and with no other possible source of sup port. Could she procure five hundred dollars, she was quite sure that she could make the plantation yield an income sufficient for the maintenance of her family, the payment of the interest, and presently for the liquidation of the debt. She then requested of him the loan of the five hundred dollars. In utter astonishment at her request, he said: Why, madam, I do not know you at all. I know that, she replied. Have you any security to offer me? None, sir, she said. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
