Book Call of the Muezzin Cape to Riyadh

Download or read book Call of the Muezzin Cape to Riyadh written by Julius Schmidt and published by Partridge Africa. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel is about the Kaufmann family, spanning three generations between 1858 and 1976. Peter Kaufmann emigrated to South Africa from Germany and became a renowned wainwright. He was also involved in the construction of the first railway line between Cape Town and Pretoria. His son, Willy, became a politician and was later appointed high commissioner in London. For many people Arabia holds something strange, something mystical. OPEC imposed a worldwide oil embargo in 1973 that affected South Africa as it did most other countries. South Africa was running low on oil reserves and urgently needed a lifeline! After the lifting of the embargo the following year, the South African government entered into negotiations with one of the Arab oil-producing countries for assistance and proposed the delivery of crude oil in exchange for gold. Behind the scenes in London, the South African embassy played a low-key role, and Willy Kaufmanns grandson, Gnther, who served a stint as a diplomat at the time at the embassy, was also involved. However, an unfortunate incident that shocked the Arab world prevented the proposal from coming to fruition!

Book excerpt: Submitted Assignment from the year 2016 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Miscellaneous, grade: 95.0, Westminster College, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this essay is to provide a visual analysis of Jean-Léon Gérôme’s 1879 oil-painting: "A Muezzin Calling From The Top Of A Minaret The Faithful To Prayer" sometimes referred to simply as "The Muezzin's Call to Prayer". For the sake of time and space, this essay will be using the latter title. It is an example of Orientalism (part of the Realism movement) and is currently located in a private collection. Little information about where the painting was created can be ascertained—he was, however, known to have made many trips to Egypt during his lifetime, so it was likely that it was on one of these such trips that he created the painting.

Book The Power of Oratory in the Medieval Muslim World

Download or read book The Power of Oratory in the Medieval Muslim World written by Linda G. Jones and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oratory and sermons had a fixed place in the religious and civic rituals of pre-modern Muslim societies and were indispensable for transmitting religious knowledge, legitimising or challenging rulers and inculcating the moral values associated with being part of the Muslim community. While there has been abundant scholarship on medieval Christian and Jewish preaching, Linda G. Jones's book is the first to consider the significance of the tradition of pulpit oratory in the medieval Islamic world. Traversing Iberia and North Africa from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries, the book analyses the power of oratory, the ritual juridical and rhetorical features of pre-modern sermons and the social profiles of the preachers and orators who delivered them. The biographical and historical sources, which form the basis of this remarkable study, shed light on different regional practices and the juridical debates between individual preachers around correct performance.

Book A Brief Guide to Islam

Download or read book A Brief Guide to Islam written by Paul Grieve and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the beliefs, history and politics of the ordinary people of Muslim countries, Grieve cuts through the complexities as he examines all aspects of Islam. He also addresses the big issues: can Islam support true democracy? Is true democracy what the West really wants for Muslim countries or are we merely seeking a cover of legitimacy for a policy of 'might is right'? Paul Grieve is an unbeliever - he is not a born-again Muslim, a proselytizer or a frustrated desert romantic. His aim is to inform. The result is an accessible but never simplistic guide that challenges stereotypical views, from women and banking to war and Malcolm X. Complete with advice for visitors to Muslim countries, and with carefully chosen primary sources, maps and illustrations, this is the ideal summary for the reader looking for an unbiased overview of the religious and political world issues that have become part of our everyday lives.

Download or read book Our Heritage written by Tsenay Serequeberhan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2000 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compelling and engaging work, Tsenay Serequeberhan discusses recent attempts to define African philosophy and the practice of hermeneutics for articulating a philosophy that is distinctively African. Pressing into service insights derived from Marx, Nietzsche, Levinas, Fanon, and others, Serequeberhan analyzes the question of how we relate to our past (i.e., our heritage) and the open possibilities of our future. He carefully examines the variety of approaches to African philosophy and argues for a historically engaged and existentially attuned paradigm shift. The result is an approach that explores the contemporary situation of African and African-American existence in view of emancipatory struggles that have established the confines of the present.

Book Islamic Heritage Architecture and Art II

Download or read book Islamic Heritage Architecture and Art II written by G Passerini and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2018-07-18 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Papers presented at the 2nd International Conference on Islamic Heritage Architecture and Art are contained in this volume. The conference attracted important research highlighting the significance of Islamic heritage architecture and art to the world and its influence across different regions. The papers deal with the design of many types of buildings in Islamic countries, including not only the better known public buildings like mosques, mausolea, citadels and forts, but also houses and gardens, engineering works such as bridges and dams, irrigation systems and many others which have also had a profound impact on society. Traditional architecture and urban environment in most Islamic countries is now being eroded by overemphasis on a global type of architecture and city planning. As a consequence, many regions are losing their identity. The included studies review these developments in the light of what classical Islamic urban design and architecture has to offer modern society. Research contained in this book provides an analysis of the materials employed and the types of structural elements used, particularly those unique to Islamic architecture. Associated topics covered include music, textiles and ceramics, which are essential parts of the architectural fabric. Also looked at are construction materials, including not only stone and brick but also more perishable materials like adobe, wood and reeds. The preservation of heritage features also requires the development of appropriate conservation techniques in response to the different materials used and the ways structural forms work, including under extreme conditions, such as earthquakes. Academics, researchers, practitioners and government employees actively involved in the topic of Islamic heritage architecture and art will find this publication of interest.
