Book excerpt: Excerpt from The California Padres and Their Missions For the facts regarding both the Missionaries and the Mis sions, the authors are indebted particularly to Fr. Francisco Pa16u's Life of Junipero Serra and N otz'cias; the narratives of such travelers as Vancouver, Beechey, and Duflot de Mofras; the books of residents under the Mexican regime, such as Alfred Robinson and William Heath Davis; and the histories of Fr. Zephyrin Engelhardt and Hubert Howe Ban croft. To Father Alexander Buckler, of Mission Santa Ines, and Father St. John o'sullivan, of Mission San Juan Capis trano, an especial meed of thanks is due for invaluable as sistance on many points, as well as for hospitalities enjoyed by the authors which have been peculiarly serviceable in putting them in touch with somewhat of the Missions' inner. Book The California of the Padres

Download or read book The California of the Padres written by Elizabeth Hughes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The California of the Padres: Or Footprints of Ancient Communism Will the reader now accompany me for a short time to the early days of California, long previous to '49, and make some acquaintance with the land and people, while the gold still slept in the hills, and herds strayed and fed over the millions Which the strong hand of the anglo-saxon has torn from the soil? Scattered up and down our rapidly growing State, monuments of an epoch already past, stand the rudely built, yet picturesque edifices known as Missions. These consist of a church, generally substantially built of adobe and plastered, of a peculiar, but not ungraceful style of archi tecture, and various outbuildings subserving the purposesbf barns, granaries or dwellings. These Missions, from their attractive situations, have often become the sites of towns, and, in many cases, the pueblos or villages formed by the settlement of the Spanish soldiers attached to the garrison of the Mission, the germs of cities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old San Gabriel Mission: Historical Notes Taken From Old Manuscripts and Records, Accurately Compiled After Diligent Research, With Mention of the Other California Franciscan Missions and Their Founders They have long since gone to their reward but the frag rance of their holy examples we still perceive; they are here no more, but their generous sacrifices are left behind for us to admire, and their splendid virtues for us to emulate. Their bodies rest somewhere in this land of perennial sunshine, but the fruits of their labor, their wondrous achievements, survive them. No, not all is gone with their passing out of this earth. Their mighty deeds speak to us even after their death. The Missions founded by them stand yet; sermons in stones as someone has called them, they loudly tell us oftheir courage, patience, devotion to God and man. In justice we must say that the Missions have been the cradle of our civilization. Within their sacred walls the Indians gained the knowledge of the true God; they were taught to serve Him and to love their fellow-men; their hands were trained to manual labor and useful trades. And who will not admit that under the wise direction of the Mission Padres, they succeeded in becoming skillful mechanics and even good artists? Witness the Missions, and the remarkable structures about them, some of which have stubbornly withstood the test of time. Our very town of San Gabriel owes its birth to the good old Padres whose energies were devoted not only to God's glory but also to man's welfare, who in consequence built up along with sacred edifices, dwellings for their charges, the Indians, community houses, schools, workshops, in a word, whole villages and towns. Look over the California map and see how many cities sprang up by the Missions that still bear their names. Those sweet, musical names were given them with exquisite taste by the founders of the Missions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Missions and Missionaries of California Vol 4

Download or read book The Missions and Missionaries of California Vol 4 written by Zephyrin Engelhardt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-22 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missions and Missionaries of California, Vol. 4: Upper California; Part III. General History, With Illustrations, Tabular Reports and Fac-Similes This volume closes the series on the General History of the California Missions. With it the work far exceeds the limits originally proposed. When in 1892' the Very Rev. F r. Michael Richardt, O. F. M., then Provincial of the Franciscan Prov ince of the Sacred Heart, approved the plan for a History of the Franciscans in the United States, and directed the writer to undertake the task, it was thought that a popular narrative could be crowded into one book. The author soon realized, however, that something more than a popular description of missionary activities was urgently needed. Beginning with California, a cursory view of the situation revealed such un common struggles in behalf of the Indians against military usurpation and colonist cupidity, accompanied and followed by such extraordinary misrepresentations and calumnies, that only a documentary history would satisfy the critical student and intelligent reader. Although a most laborious undertaking, and poor health a steady companion, the author' determined to investigate the enormous amount 'of documents thoroughly and judicially in order to bring out the whole truth whatever it might prove to be. Accordingly, the character of the missionaries, their religious and moral principles, their object, methods, resources, successes and reverses were patiently examined and faithfully recorded in these volumes. Likewise, the charges against the missionaries have been probed, and the character of the men who originated, disseminated or published them, has been laid bare. Now that the clouds of misrepresentation have been lifted, the history of the twenty-one Missions in detail will be a comparatively easy matter. Two or three volumes will suffice to relate all that is of note concerning the local affairs of the missions and their missionaries.
