Book Calendar Modern Letts 4v Cb

Download or read book Calendar Modern Letts 4v Cb written by Edgell Rickword and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1966. The Calendar, which appeared between March 1925 and July 1927, was able to spread its influence much more widely than its present lack of reputation would suggest. It had much to do with the growth of the modern movement in criticism. By 1920, the old literary establishment had been almost entirely ousted by the younger generation that had been coming into prominence since about 1910. This title aims to showcase that, during this short period of existence, The Calendar of Modern Letters published some of the best criticism to appear in any literary review since the decline of the great politico-literary reviews of the nineteenth century.

Book The Letters of Wyndham Lewis

Download or read book The Letters of Wyndham Lewis written by W. K. Rose and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-31 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1963 and edited by an authority on Wyndham Lewis (whom he also knew personally) this volume made available for the first time over 500 letters of Wyndham Lewis, who for half a century was a dynamic force among English artists and intellectuals. Culturally, Lewis played the dual role of innovator and iconoclast. Lewis’s letters show the wide range of his interests as well as his great verbal energy and unrelenting intellect. Lewis knew most of the significant artists and writers of his time and some of them – Augustus John, Pound, Eliot and Joyce were his lifelong friends and chief correspondents. Regardless of to whom he was writing, he displayed his intense awareness of the personalities and currents around him.

Book excerpt: New perspectives on women's contributions to periodical culture in the era of modernismThis collection highlights the contributions of women writers, editors and critics to periodical culture in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It explores women's role in shaping conversations about modernism and modernity across varied aesthetic and ideological registers, and foregrounds how such participation was shaped by a wide range of periodical genres. The essays focus on well-known publications and introduce those as yet obscure and understudied - including middlebrow and popular magazines, movement-based, radical papers, avant-garde titles and classic Little Magazines. Examining neglected figures and shining new light on familiar ones, the collection enriches our understanding of the role women played in the print culture of this transformative period.Key FeaturesHelps recover neglected women writers and cast new light on canonical onesHighlights the geographical diversity of modern British print cultureEmphasises the interdisciplinary nature of modernism, including essays on modernist dance, music, cinema, drama and architecture Includes a section on social movement periodicals

Book The Letters of D H Lawrence

Download or read book The Letters of D H Lawrence written by D. H. Lawrence and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-09 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, covering three years from March 1924 to March 1927, comprises over 890 letters, of which about 350 are previously unpublished. In 1924 Lawrence is again in the USA. He and Frieda, with his disciple the Honourable Dorothy Brett, return to Taos, New Mexico where Frieda soon becomes the owner of a ranch, Kiowa. The tensions among them contribute to Lawrence's falling dangerously ill. He recovers at Kiowa; he and Frieda go to England and Germany in Autumn 1925; they then settle in Italy, where - except for his final visit the next summer to the Midlands - they remain. After leaving the USA he writes short and long stories with European settings, book reviews, and the first two versions of Lady Chatterley's Lover. It is a productive period, but Lawrence's health becomes a serious concern. The volume provides annotation identifying persons and allusions, and includes a biographical introduction.

  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book The Short Story written by Ailsa Cox and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long regarded as an undervalued and marginalised genre, the short story is undergoing a renaissance. The Short Story celebrates its unique appeal. Practitioners and scholars address the issues facing short story criticism in the 21st century. Author A.L. Kennedy shares the pleasures and frustrations of writing the short story in the literary marketplace. This is followed by an assessment of recent attempts to promote short story readership in the UK. Other contributors look at forms such as the short-short and the short story sequence. The range of authors discussed includes Martin Amis, Anita Desai, Salman Rushdie and James Joyce. The short story is the most international of genres; this is reflected in chapters on Jorge Luis Borges and Italo Calvino and on Japanese short fiction. Postcolonial and translation theory are combined with the close reading of specific texts. Neglected authors, such as the Welsh writer Dorothy Edwards and the colonial figure Frank Swettenham, are re-evaluated and we also consider genre writing, with chapters on crime fiction and Ray Bradbury’s Martian Chronicles. Integrating theory and practice, The Short Story will appeal both to writers and to students of literary criticism.
