Book Thermal Stress Analysis of a Cylinder of Semi plastic Material

Download or read book Thermal Stress Analysis of a Cylinder of Semi plastic Material written by Donald Hunter and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A solution is derived for the thermal stresses in a finite cylindrical solid composed of a material for which the modulus of elasticity decreases linearly with an increase in temperature. The cylinder is assumed to contain a distribution heat source that is radially symmetrical. The solution which heat is produced by fission. The results are compared with those obtained from a plane strain solution.

Book A Biharmonic Relaxation Method for Calculating Thermal Stress in Cooled Irregular Cylinders

Download or read book A Biharmonic Relaxation Method for Calculating Thermal Stress in Cooled Irregular Cylinders written by Arthur G. Holms and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical method was developed for calculating thermal stresses in irregular cylinders cooled by one or more internal passages. The use of relaxation methods and elementary methods of finite differences was found to give approximations to the correct values when compared with previously known solutions for concentric circular cylinders possessing symmetrical and asymmetrical temperature distributions.

Book Distribution of Steady State Temperatures and Thermoelastic Stresses in a Cylindrical Shell with Internal Heat Generation and Cooled on Both Sides Or Only on One Side

Download or read book Distribution of Steady State Temperatures and Thermoelastic Stresses in a Cylindrical Shell with Internal Heat Generation and Cooled on Both Sides Or Only on One Side written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General expressions for steady state temperatures and elastic thermal stress distributions are derived for a hollow fuel element cooled on both sides. The main simplifying assumptions consist of one dimensional heat transfer and a single medium. Dimensionless numerical results are plotted in the case of uniform internal heat generation and for constant thermal conductivity. Solid rods and flat plates are treated as special cases. As could be expected, cooling on both sides rather than on only one side, leads to significant reduction in maximum fuel temperature and thermal stresses for a given power density, or to a significant increase in power density for either given maximum temperature drop in the fuel or for maximum tensile thermal stress. Typically, for a rod diameter ratio of 2, the power density could be increased by a factor of 3 to 4 without increasing the maximum stress. Similarly, for the same power density, replacing internal cooling of a hollow fuel element by external cooling reduces the maximum fuel temperature drop by a factor of 1.5 and the average fuel temperature drop (or maximum tensile stress) by a factor of 2, with the same maximum compressive stress (for a rod O.D./I.D. of 2).

Book Temperatures and Stresses in Thick walled Cylinders and a Comparison with Wind Tunnel Experiments

Download or read book Temperatures and Stresses in Thick walled Cylinders and a Comparison with Wind Tunnel Experiments written by S. V. Nardo and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thick-walled, circular cylinder with an internal subsonic flow of high energy air and an insulated outer surface is analyzed for internal heat transfer, transient temperature distribution, and thermal stresses and deformations. The heat transfer coefficient to the body is determined as a function of time from the airflow conditions. A finite difference solution of the transient, one-dimensional, cylindrical heat conduction equation is used to determine the temperature distribution at any time. Two numerical methods are then applied to obtain the thermoelastic stresses and deformation in the cylinder. The first method is a multi-layer technique, and the second is a finite difference scheme. Both methods consider Young's Modulus and the coefficient of thermal expansion to be temperature dependent. The transient temperature distributions and thermoelastic strains obtained from the analysis are compared with the results of wind tunnel tests performed on five stainless steel models. The temperatures predicted by the finite difference solution of the heat conduction equation are in good agreement with temperature obtained from thermocouples located at the inner and outer surfaces of the cylindrical model; and are in fair agreement with temperatures obtained from thermocouples located in the interior of the model. Thermal strains predicted by the theories agree very well with the experimental strains until the time when the yield stress of the stainless steel was exceeded. (Author).
