Book excerpt: The goal of the research carried out on this contract is the development of theoretical methods which will aid in the interpretation and modeling of gas-phase combustion processes. The methods are based upon variational transition state theory (VTST), which has been shown to be an efficient method of computing accurate rate constants for gas-phase reactions. The study of gas-phase reactions is an important step toward understanding complicated mechanisms of the combustion of energetic materials. Also, gas-phase rate data are needed as input for models of these combustion mechanisms. The limitations in the accuracy of VTST arise from (1) a breakdown of the fundamental dynamical assumption of TST, (2) the ad hoc manner in which quantum mechanical effects are included in VTST, (3) the approximate methods for including anharmonic effects, and (4) inaccuracies in the potential energy surface information used as input into the theory. The major part of the research on this contract has included extension of the methods to surmount these limitations, validation of the new methods by testing them against accurate quantum mechanical methods on model collinear reactions, and extension of the methods to treat realistic reactions involving polyatomic molecules.

After a short reminder of the concepts and laws of thermodynamics, and of chemical and physical kinetics, the book suggests a methodology for the kinetic modelling of these reactions: generation and reduction of reaction mechanisms, estimation of kinetic data of elementary reactions, estimation of the thermodynamic data and transport data of molecules and free radicals, and analysis and validation of mechanisms by comparison of calculated results with the experimental results obtained using laboratory reactors. The models thus generated carry all the information necessary to allow them to be incorporated into computer programs for the calculation of reactors or of the fluid dynamics of reacting gases. The intention of this symposion was to bring together leading researchers from the fields of reaction dynamics, kinetics, catalysis and reactive flow model ling to discuss and review the advances in the understanding of chemical kinetics about 100 years after Max Bodenstein's pioneering work on the "hydrogen iodine reaction", which he carried out at the Chemistry Institute of the University of Heidelberg. The idea to focus in his doctoral thesis [1] on this reaction was brought up by his supervisor Victor Meyer (successor of Robert Bunsen at the Chemistry Institute of the University of Heidelberg) and originated from the non reproducible behaviour found by Bunsen and Roscoe in their early photochemical investigations of the H2/Cl2 system [2] and by van't Hoff [3], and V. Meyer and co-workers [4] in their experiments on the slow combustion of H2/02 mixtures.
