Book excerpt: Seeing the writing on the wall, one of Spain's largest unions began secretly arming workers throughout the country. The anarcho-syndicalist union evolved from overseeing workers' defense to organizing armed resistance to the Fascist coup. From there, it administered entire militias and finally coordinated industrial self-management and food distribution, leading a revolution within the Spanish Civil War. A fascinating new history and a lively narrative of ordinary men and women making history. Agustín Guillamón is an independent historian and the author of The Friends of Durruti Group, 1937–39 and The Committees Revolution.

Book Sister Soldiers of the Great War

Download or read book Sister Soldiers of the Great War written by Cynthia Toman and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I am on night duty ... on what is supposed to be the ‘hopeless ward’ so you can imagine, or try to, just what I am doing. I know you cannot really have the faintest idea ...” In Sister Soldiers of the Great War, award-winning author Cynthia Toman recovers the long-lost history of Canada’s first women soldiers – nursing sisters who enlisted as officers with the Canadian Army Medical Corps. These experienced professional nurses left their friends, families, and jobs to enlist in the army. Granted relative rank and equal pay to men, they had a mandate to salvage as many sick and wounded men as possible for return to the front lines. Nothing prepared them for poor living conditions, the scale of casualties, or the type of wounds they encountered, but their letters and diaries reveal that they were determined to soldier on under all circumstances while still “living as well as possible.”

Book Multilevel Converters for Industrial Applications

Download or read book Multilevel Converters for Industrial Applications written by Sergio Alberto Gonzalez and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern semiconductor devices have reached high current and voltage levels, and their power-handling limits can be extended if they are used in multilevel converter configurations. To create high-performance and reliable control designs, however, engineers need in-depth understanding of the characteristics and operation of these topologies. Multilevel Converters for Industrial Applications presents a thorough and comprehensive analysis of multilevel converters with a common DC voltage source. The book offers a novel perspective to help readers understand the principles of the operation of voltage-source multilevel converters as power processors, and their capabilities and limitations. The book begins with an overview of medium-voltage power converters and their applications. It then analyzes the topological characteristics of the diode-clamped multilevel converter, the flying capacitor multilevel converter, and the asymmetric cascaded multilevel converter. For each topology, the authors highlight particular control issues and design trade-offs. They also develop relevant modulation and control strategies. Numerous graphical representations aid in the analysis of the topologies and are useful for beginning the analysis of new multilevel converter topologies. The last two chapters of the book explore two case studies that analyze the behavior of the cascade asymmetric multilevel converter as a distribution static compensator and shunt active power filter, and the behavior of the diode-clamped topology configured as a back-to-back converter. These case studies demonstrate how to address the associated control problems with advanced control and modulation schemes. Examining recent advances, this book provides deep insight on the design of high-power multilevel converters and their applications. It is a valuable reference for anyone interested in medium-voltage power conversion, which is increasingly being used in industry and in renewable energy and distributed generation systems to improve efficiency and operation flexibility.

Book Information Processing in Computer Assisted Interventions

Download or read book Information Processing in Computer Assisted Interventions written by Nassir Navab and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-06-26 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to scientific and technological advances in many parallel fields, medical procedures are rapidly evolving towards solutions which are less invasive and more effective. In the previous decades, information processing in diagnostic imaging provided many solutions to physicians in particular within radiology, neurology, cardiology, nuclear medicine and radiation therapy departments. In the last decade, progress in computer technology, imaging and mechatronics has allowed computer-assisted intervention (CAI) systems and solutions to penetrate the intervention and operating rooms. CAI’s major challenge in the beginning of the twenty-first century is real-time processing, analysis and visualization of large amount of heterogeneous, static and dynamic patient data, and understanding of surgery for designing intelligent operating rooms and developing advanced training tools. Excellent scientists, engineers and physicians have created many advanced research groups around the world and are starting to provide innovative, breakthrough solutions. Information Processing in Computer-Assisted Interventions (IPCAI) aims at gathering the best work in this field and allowing authors to present and discuss it in detail. IPCAI wishes to select and present the highlights of research in CAI and aims at distinguishing itself for the quality of the presented papers and the excitement and depth of the discussions they generate.

Book This Small Army of Women

Download or read book This Small Army of Women written by Linda J. Quiney and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With her soft linen head scarf and white apron emblazoned with a red cross, the Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse, or VAD, has become a romantic emblem of the First World War. This Small Army of Women draws on diaries, letters, and interviews to tell the forgotten story of the nearly two thousand women from Canada and Newfoundland who volunteered to “do their bit” at home and overseas. Middle-class and well-educated but largely untrained, VADs were excluded from Canadian military hospitals overseas (the realm of the professional nurse) but helped solve Britain’s nursing deficit and filled gaps in Canada’s domestic nursing ranks. Their dedication and struggle to secure a place at their brothers’ bedsides reveals much about women’s contributions to the war effort, the tensions between amateur and professional nurses, and women’s evolving role outside the home.
