Book In the Cause of Labour A History of British Trade Unionism

Download or read book In the Cause of Labour A History of British Trade Unionism written by Rob Sewell and published by Wellred Books. This book was released on with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many narrative histories of the struggles of British workers. However, Rob Sewell's book is different. This book is aimed especially at class-conscious workers who are seeking to escape from the ills of the capitalist system, that has embroiled the world in a quagmire of wars, poverty and suffering. This history of trade unions is particularly relevant at the present time. After a long period of stagnation, the fresh winds of the class struggle are beginning to blow. Rob Sewell's book was written precisely with these new forces in mind. The British labour movement is the oldest in the world. More than two hundred years ago, the pioneers of the movement created illegal revolutionary trade unions in the face of the most terrible violence and repression. In the course of the nineteenth century they built trade unions of the downtrodden unskilled workers - those with "blistered hands and the unshorn chins," as Feargus O'Connor called them. Finally, they established a mass party of Labour based on the trade unions, breaking the monopoly of the Tories and Liberals. In the stormy years following the Russian Revolution they engaged in ferocious class battles, culminating in the General Strike of 1926. Nor did the achievements of the British trade union movement cease with the Depression and the Second World War. The post-war upswing served to strengthen the working class and heal the scars of the inter-war period. By the time of the industrial tidal wave of the early 1970s, they drove a Tory government from power, after turning Edward Heath's anti-trade union laws into a dead letter. Later, the miners, the traditional vanguard of the British working class, waged an epic year-long struggle in 1984-85 against the juggernaut of Thatcherism. They could have succeeded, had the rightwing Labour and trade union leaders not abandoned them and left them isolated. The book contains vital lessons and is essential reading for today's worker militants.

Book Revival Trade Unionism 1900

Download or read book Revival Trade Unionism 1900 written by George Howell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public approval of a book is indicated by its sale. A second edition of this having been exhausted, my publishers deem it advisable to issue a third edition revised to date. In assenting, I have had to examine it thoroughly in order to see whether the work required correction, and, if so, to what extent. After careful perusal I find no reason to modify any sentence, withdraw any expression, or correct any statement of fact in its pages. Much has happened since it was written in 1890, the proofs finally revised in January 1891, but in all respects my views are unchanged 3 nor have the last ten years Shown cause for any abandon ment of the opinions then held. My conclusions have proved sound in all instances, even where I ventured to predict. I have therefore left the text untouched except for a few verbal emendations, and the restoration of two pages (soa and 595) which were unaccountably dropped out in going through the press. All that I desire to add has been compressed into a Supplementary Chapter, in which the several controversial points are dealt with, and statistics are brought up to date. The book was written in the heat of controversies to which illusion is made, the somewhat severe criticisms being justified by the then facts and circumstances. If they now appear to be harsh, it is because the policy then denounced has been abandoned, or so modified as to be no longer open to the condemnation then pronounced.

Download or read book State of the Union written by Nelson Lichtenstein and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-25 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a fresh and timely reinterpretation, Nelson Lichtenstein examines how trade unionism has waxed and waned in the nation's political and moral imagination, among both devoted partisans and intransigent foes. From the steel foundry to the burger-grill, from Woodrow Wilson to John Sweeney, from Homestead to Pittston, Lichtenstein weaves together a compelling matrix of ideas, stories, strikes, laws, and people in a streamlined narrative of work and labor in the twentieth century. The "labor question" became a burning issue during the Progressive Era because its solution seemed essential to the survival of American democracy itself. Beginning there, Lichtenstein takes us all the way to the organizing fever of contemporary Los Angeles, where the labor movement stands at the center of the effort to transform millions of new immigrants into alert citizen unionists. He offers an expansive survey of labor's upsurge during the 1930s, when the New Deal put a white, male version of industrial democracy at the heart of U.S. political culture. He debunks the myth of a postwar "management-labor accord" by showing that there was (at most) a limited, unstable truce. Lichtenstein argues that the ideas that had once sustained solidarity and citizenship in the world of work underwent a radical transformation when the rights-centered social movements of the 1960s and 1970s captured the nation's moral imagination. The labor movement was therefore tragically unprepared for the years of Reagan and Clinton: although technological change and a new era of global economics battered the unions, their real failure was one of ideas and political will. Throughout, Lichtenstein argues that labor's most important function, in theory if not always in practice, has been the vitalization of a democratic ethos, at work and in the larger society. To the extent that the unions fuse their purpose with that impulse, they can once again become central to the fate of the republic. State of the Union is an incisive history that tells the story of one of America's defining aspirations. This edition includes a new preface in which Lichtenstein engages with many of those who have offered commentary on State of the Union and evaluates the historical literature that has emerged in the decade since the book's initial publication. He also brings his narrative into the current moment with a final chapter, "Obama's America: Liberalism without Unions.?

No Trade Unionist can deny that, without some method of enforcing the decision of the majority, effective trade combination is impossible. It must not be inferred from the above criticism of the theoretic position taken by the men who steered the Trade Union Movement through its great crisis, that they were conscious of their inconsistency with regard to State intervention, or that they deliberately set to work to win their case upon false premises. No one can study the history of their leadership without being impressed by their devotion, sagacity, and high personal worth. We must regard their inconsistency as a striking instance of the danger which besets a party formed without any clear idea of the social state at which it is aiming. In the struggle of these years we watch the English Trade Unionists driven from their Utopian aspirations into an inconsistent opportunism, from which they drifted during the next generation into 1 See his letter on the Government Annuities Bill, 1864: "Lastly, we are told of Government dictation and interference. I cannot believe men of sense will say this twice seriously.... Leave it to the political economists to complain.... Let working men remember that whenever a measure in their interest is proposed to Parliament, or suggested in the country--whether it be to limit excessive hours of labour, to protect women and childre...

Book The History of Trade Unionism

Download or read book The History of Trade Unionism written by Beatrice Potter Webb and published by Hubbard Press. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Beatrice Potter Webb was originally published in 1894 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'The History of Trade Unionism' is a fascinating work on social history and the trade union movement. Beatrice Potter Webb was born in Gloucester, England in 1858. Both her mother and brother died early in her childhood leaving her to be raised by her father, Richard Potter. He was a successful businessman with large railroad interests and many influential friends in politics and industry whose company the young Beatrice would become accustomed to. Upon reaching adulthood, Potter moved to London and helped her cousin, Charles, a social reformer, research his book The Life and Labour of the People in London. It was during this time that she was introduced to Sidney James Webb, who later became her husband and collaborator. The Webb's, together, wrote eleven volumes of work which arguably shaped the way subsequent scholars thought about sociology. They also collaborated on more than 100 books and articles on the conditions of factory workers, and the economic history of Britain, among other subjects. "
