Download or read book Horrible Prettiness written by Robert Allen and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Allen's compelling book examines burlesque not only as popular entertainment but also as a complex and transforming cultural phenomenon. When Lydia Thompson and her controversial female troupe of "British Blondes" brought modern burlesque to the United States in 1868, the result was electric. Their impertinent humor, streetwise manner, and provocative parodies of masculinity brought them enormous popular success--and the condemnation of critics, cultural commentators, and even women's rights campaigners. Burlesque was a cultural threat, Allen argues, because it inverted the "normal" world of middle-class social relations and transgressed norms of "proper" feminine behavior and appearance. Initially playing to respectable middle-class audiences, burlesque was quickly relegated to the shadow-world of working-class male leisure. In this process the burlesque performer "lost" her voice, as burlesque increasingly revolved around the display of her body. Locating burlesque within the context of both the social transformation of American theater and its patterns of gender representation, Allen concludes that burlesque represents a fascinating example of the potential transgressiveness of popular entertainment forms, as well as the strategies by which they have been contained and their threats defused.

Book Pretty Things

Download or read book Pretty Things written by Liz Goldwyn and published by It Books. This book was released on 2010-12-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liz Goldwyn's lifelong fascination with the inimitable glamour of classic burlesque inspired her to spend the past eight years corresponding with, visiting, interviewing, receiving striptease lessons from, and forming close relationships with the last generation of the great American burlesque queeens. Goldwyn invites us to step back into an era when the hourglass figure was in vogue and striptease was a true art form. Meet Betty "Ball of Fire" Rowland, who was known for her flaming red hair and bump–and–grind routines. (It turns out she once sued the author's grandfather, Samuel Goldwyn Jr., for using her stage name and costume in his Hollywood picture, Ball of Fire.) Meet Sherry Britton, who, with her long black hair and curvy, trim physique, was among the most stunning of the burlesque stars before Mayor LaGuardia outlawed burlesque in New York. Meet Zorita, whose sexually explicit "Consummation of the Wedding of the Snake" dance (performed with a live snake) and other daring performances earned her legendary status. Goldwyn draws back the curtain to reveal the personal journeys of yesteryear's icons of female sexuality and power, restoring their legacy to an age that has all but forgotten them–despite today's resurgence of burlesque.

  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book Neo Burlesque written by Lynn Sally and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-27 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neo-burlesque movement seeks to restore a sense of glamour, theatricality, and humor to striptease. Neo-burlesque performers strut their stuff in front of audiences that appreciate their playful brand of pro-sex, often gender-bending, feminism. Performance studies scholar and acclaimed burlesque artist Lynn Sally offers an inside look at the history, culture, and philosophy of New York’s neo-burlesque scene. Revealing how twenty-first century neo-burlesque is in constant dialogue with the classic burlesque of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, she considers how today’s performers use camp to comment on preconceived notions of femininity. She also explores how the striptease performer directs the audience’s gaze, putting on layers of meaning while taking off layers of clothing. Through detailed profiles of iconic neo-burlesque performers such as Dita Von Teese, Dirty Martini, Julie Atlas Muz, and World Famous *BOB*, this book makes the case for understanding neo-burlesque as a new sexual revolution. Yet it also examines the broader community of “Pro-Am” performers who use neo-burlesque as a liberating vehicle for self-expression. Raising important questions about what feminism looks like, Neo-Burlesque celebrates a revolutionary performing art and participatory culture whose acts have political reverberations, both onstage and off.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I didn’t want to think about spiritual woo-woo or goddesses or mindfulness. But Legs, without even deliberately intending to, led me to see that all those things supported my individuality while helping me be of more service to my students. She led by example, keeping her sharp sense of humor even as she maintained her kindness and sensitivity.” - Jo Weldon, Headmistress of the New York School of Burlesque and author of The Burlesque Handbook Stripped Down is about one woman’s journey into deeper levels of acceptance and love of herself through the powerful art form of burlesque. When she was young, she “felt adrift...like I was water, taking the shape of whatever container I was currently poured into." Like many, she felt anxious around her appearance, struggling with an eating disorder and toxic beauty standards. When Anna discovers a vibrant form of self-expression in the most unlikely of places, the rest of her life begins. She explores her growth and development through the book, but even more: in sharing her story, she can teach every reader the same things she learned. Chapters include: • Why This and Why Me? • Burlesque the Beginning: The Celebration of the Sensual, Sacred Feminine • The Myth of Separation: How Being "Not Enough" Led Me to Burlesque • Hiding the Magic: Fear and Limitations of the Female Form & Feminine Energy • Judgment: Releasing the Ties that Bind • Burlesque as Medicine: The Revolution Starts Within • Making Peace with the Body Anna, through her alter ego Legs Malone, explores what creates limitations - money, power, misogyny, trauma, systemic racism, shame - to help the reader break free. By saying yes to the messages that lie deep in her heart, she shows us how the opinions, judgments and fears of others fall away as her unexpected path emerges - and how you can do it too, with or without burlesque. As she says so eloquently in Stripped Down, "When one person makes the brave choice to own their joy and honor their unique voice, it acts as a giant game of dominoes. Inspiration and recognition build and resonate with each dropped and fallen thought of not-enoughness." If Yes Please, Year of Yes and Girl, Wash Your Face had a baby birthed by Dita von Teese, it would be this book.

Flip over for fantasies in fetish with dramatic costumes and the allure of submission. Burlesque and the Art of the Teese "I advocate glamour. Every day. Every minute." I'm a good dancer and a nice girl, but I'm a great showgirl. I sell, in a word, magic. Burlesque is a world of illusion and dreams and of course, the striptease. Whether I am bathing in my martini glass, riding my sparkling carousel horse, or emerging from my giant gold powder compact, I live out my most glamorous fantasies by bringing nostalgic imagery to life. Let me show you my world of gorgeous pin-ups, tantalizing stripteases, and femmes fatales. I'll give you a glimpse into my life, but a lady never reveals all. Fetish and the Art of the Teese You may have come for the fetish. Or you may just be sneaking a peek at this mysterious and peculiar other side. No matter what you've come for, there is something for you to indulge in. My world of fetish may not be the one that you would expect. As a burlesque performer, I entice my audience, bringing their minds closer and closer to sex and then -- as good temptress must -- snatching it away. As a fetish star, I apply the same techniques. . . . An opera-length kid leather glove, a strict wasp waist, an impossibly high patent leather heel, a severely painted red lip. . . . Come with me into my world of decadent fetishism.

Book Stripped

Download or read book Stripped written by Maggie M. Werner and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2020-11-11 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stripped examines the ways in which erotic bodies communicate in performance and as cultural figures. Focusing on symbols independent of language, Maggie M. Werner explores the signs and signals of erotic dance, audience responses to these codes, and how this exchange creates embodied rhetoric. Informed by her own ethnographic research conducted in strip clubs and theaters, Werner analyzes the movement, dress, and cosmetic choices of topless dancers and neo-burlesque performers. Drawing on critical methods of analysis, she develops approaches for interpreting embodied erotic rhetoric and the marginal cultural practices that construct women’s public erotic bodies. She follows these bodies out into the streets—into the protest spaces where sex workers and anti-rape activists challenge discourses about morality and victimhood and struggle to remake their own identities. Throughout, Werner showcases the voices of these performers and in the analyses shares her experiences as an audience member, interviewer, and paying customer. The result is a uniquely personal and erudite study that advances conversations about women’s agency and erotic performance, moving beyond the binary that views the erotic body as either oppressed or empowered. Theoretically sophisticated and delightfully intimate, Stripped is an important contribution to the study of the rhetoric of the body and to rhetorical and performance studies more broadly.

Book Naked Exhibitionism

Download or read book Naked Exhibitionism written by Claire Nally and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be naked in public? Approaching this question from across the disciplines, this book examines the evolution of female exhibitionism from criminal taboo to prime-time entertainment. Taking an interdisciplinary approach which brings together all fields of popular culture, including literature, media, film and linguistics, Claire Nally and Angela Smith offer an examination of gendered exhibitionism from the mid-twentieth century to the present day. They ask whether bodily exposure provides the liberation it professes to or restricts our most secret selves to the sanitised realm of socially-sanctioned gender roles. From the art of burlesque as a riotous kingdom of the imagination to reality TV which helps women to unearth their 'true' and buried feminine selves, Nally and Smith explore how the critical history and theory of exhibitionism intersects with the wider movement towards gender equality. Examining effects of second-wave feminism to problematise the naked female form, female and gender-transgressive performers from Bette Davis to Dita von Teese are placed in their cultural context. In order to demonstrate that female exhibitionism reamins at the heart of popular culture, this book also examines the works of Peter Ackroyd and the controversial playwright Sarah Kane, uncovering the contradictions behind evolving representations of public exposure. Within a post-feminist framework, the cultural constructions behind the repackaging of female exhibitionism are explored and the prominence of bodily exposure in popular culture examined, along with the implications of those artists who perform gender as a public masquerade. Finally, hit TV shows 'Ladette to Lady' and 'How to Look Good Naked' are interrogated to expose the buried contradictions behind this public unveiling: are women seizing control of their own identity, or is this revelation an illusion? Innovative, unflinching and pertinent, 'Naked Exhibitionism' explores naked bodies in the public gaze and critically reformulates the feminist and cultural debate around the performance of gender.
